Makes me think that they might just ditch Bottas at the end of the year for him. Certainly I think Ocon would do a better job getting closer to Lewis
Have you not been paying attention to what Bottas's job is? Bottas is good enough, without being too good. He's particularly effective at holding faster cars up, which makes him the ideal rear-gunner.

Merc had 4 harrowing years of Nico vs Lewis, and are now experiencing the relative bliss of still winning the WDC and WCC every year without any sort of serious internal strife.

Ocon coming in as a young charger just as Hamilton starts to get too old for this shit is a much preferable scenario than having the two butt-heads.

Bottas has only really needed to be better than Raikkonen, which to be honest wasnt that hard. It'll be a different story with Leclerc joining Ferrari.

Hopefully Mahindra announce Wehrlein tomorrow, I don't want this mediorce prima donna anywhere near TRonda.

Vandoorne in FE will be just as useless as he was in F1, the competition is simply too strong for him.

So within two years of a new concept with five years less development time Honda are just 20bhp behind Mercedes in race trim and 40-50bhp behind in qualifying. Honda will also be bringing a new development spec to Abu Dhabi which will bring a similar step up in performance as the Spec 3.

Just incredible -- now that the McLaren shackles are off they'll have brought a triple digit increase in power during in season development and be nipping at the heels of Mercedes.

I'm looking forward to the Hammy and Max show next year.

So they're at the stage they should have been when they entered F1?

Good on them.

Would be nice if they could actually finish a race after putting in a strong quali. Usually the PU won't have a strong saturday AND sunday, like Suzuka just showed us last weekend.

Catching Mercedes probably wasn't even possible under the token system, so you can really only look at the relative gains made since 2017.
In that regard, Renault is probably the most embarrassing.

The Honda Information Minister has made his rounds for the week. If they made all the horsepower gains he's claimed they would be on about 1600hp by now.

Renault the team I would agree, but Renault the engine has actually, y'know, won some races.
Largely on tracks where the engine matters least (extreme example: Monaco this year) or by luck when Mercedes (and later Ferrari) were having issues/crashes.
That's the opposite of flattering the engine.

Technically speaking, a Renault powered car hasn't won a GP since Spa 2014. :P (Yes yes TAG Heuer rebadge blah blah).

What is the most successful power unit not branded a typical car power unit? Is it Tag Heuer?

"My watch won more GP's than your power unit!" lol

Hard to answer as a lot of race winning engine suppliers no longer exist.

All time wins by engine manufacturer:

1 Ferrari 235
2 Ford Cosworth 176
3 Mercedes 171
4 Renault 168
5 Honda 72
6 Climax 40
7 TAG Porsche 25
8 BMW 20
9 BRM 18
10 Alfa Romeo 12
11 Offenhauser 11
12 Maserati 11
13 Vanwall 9
14 Repco 8
15 TAG Heuer 8
16 Mugen Honda 4
17 Matra 3
18 Porsche 1
19 Weslake 1

From Moss's list, maybe Repco? They're an Australian car parts retailer and won a world championship with Brabham. They did actually commission and build the engine though (not something they ever did prior or since).
Cool, thank you both! I'm always intrigued by some of the smaller, less known teams in the past since it seems like those days are indeed in the past.

Wehrlein confirmed at Mahindra, alongside Jerome D'Ambrosio

First day of Formula E testing is underway in Valencia, sadly no streams.

Excellent news about Wehrlein.

It's sounding like the final two seats will be filled by Albon and Kubica.

Dodgins during C4's Suzuka coverage said Albon was Toro Rosso bound, now more stories linking him have emerged. And Bobby K is said to have Stroll level of millions from Orlen and Lotos to cover the hole for Williams

One of the best grids in a long time? Nearly all of the crap we usually see at the back has been weeded out and replaced by the hottest young talent from the lower formula and factory teams.

The whole situation with Kubica is just hilarious. Tapes have leaked related to the current Polish prime minister and they're very damaging to his public view. Apparently he was glad in 2011 when Robert had his accident so that the bank he represented wouldn't have to pay Ferrari millions in sponsorship money. We're nearing elections in Poland and he's pretty much doing damage control by meeting with Robert and throwing serious money at him through a state owned company (Orlen). Tha'ts on top of the Lotos sponsorship he already had (fun fact Lotos is also state owned so Polish taxpayers will be paying off Robert's sponsorship through two different companies ;)).

tl;dr Kubica will indeed receive a big sponsorship he looked for

Hah, it would be great if this got him the seat. Williams are looking for big sponsorship as well.

Two Belgian drivers in Formula E next year. I might have to give it a chance again after skipping it last season.
Will be interesting to see how Stoffel and Paffet match up. (Sad to see Mercedes leave DTM though :/)

Hartley chewed himself up by being shit. Four tenths slower on avg racepace compared to the untested Gasly sealed his fate. He should have been long gone.

Mercedes under investigation for moveable aero. Motorsport.com says it's the holes in the wheel rims and hubs, a cheat that Red Bull were banned from running previously.

Hartley always seemed like a stopgap solution with limited time in F1. Considering his age and career history, he was probably a better Honda Rosso development driver than a rookie like Gasly, but that role has now reached its end.

Hartley's ceiling is basically a very good B tier driver. Good in sports cars, F2 etc, just not good enough for F1. See: Jolyon Palmer, Alexander Rossi.

The McLaren curse continues for Vandoorne in Formula E, still slow and unreliable:

Seems McLaren Applied Technologies supplied him with a dud battery.
