    FormulaEra 2019 End-of-Season Survey results:

Here's how you rated the drivers:

    1. Lewis Hamilton - 9.3 (Low: 8; High: 10)
The only driver to get only high grades is, unsurprisingly, Lewis Hamilton. Having wrapped up the championship well before the end of the season and winning over half of the races while visiting the podium another 4 times, his dominance this year is fairly undeniable. To put it in the words of jay_toon10 who rated Lewis a 9: "Consistent, relentless and mature drives all year long and that mistake in Germany is the only blemish on an otherwise perfect painting." Though some of FormulaEra would appreciate it if he complained a bit less about his tires while he's easily cruising at the head of the field. But hey, the man probably gets bored otherwise, so let him have his radio.

    2. Max Verstappen - 8.6 (Low: 6; High: 10)
Max Verstappen remains somewhat divisive in that FormulaEra can't really decide if he's matured or if he's still the same old Max. His results however show a forever upward trend. With 3 race wins, 3 first places in qualifying (Even though not starting in pole for Mexico, he was still qualified first), and a total of 9 podiums, he wrung every last bit of pace out of the new combination of Red Bull Racing and Honda power and grabbed 3rd in the WDC. According to sixclix who rated Max a 9: "First time as leading driver of the team, and he did not disappoint. Dragged that RBR through their worst times to descent results, pole positions and wins. Only had a few crucial errors which cost him some points, and a better score." Now if only he could mature his way out of some of that classic Verstappen family temperament.

    3. Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8.1 (Low: 4; High: 10)
Formula One's self-titled Smooth Operator was largely ignored by the camera's all season. Some would blame bad directing for this, but honestly, it was mostly because Carlos was driving against nobody for most of the season. For a bunch of races he'd be ahead of the midfield in a car that wasn't capable of fighting the top 3 teams. A priviliged position to be in, for sure, and a feather in the cap of a mature drive all season. Kindly rewarded by a first podium for Sainz in Brazil, which in true fashion was celebrated in obscurity hours after the race due to Lewis Hamilton taking the honors pre-penalty after the race. DrM rated Sainz at an 8 and said: "One of the most overlooked drivers in 2019. If Mclaren produce a good car in 2020, he could be the one to watch."

    4. Charles Leclerc - 7.8 (Low: 6; High: 10)
Not everyone was convinced by Charles swift promotion to Ferrari to replace Kimi this year. After all, it was only going to be his second season in F1. But much like Max Verstappen in his mid-season promotion to Red Bull, he almost immediately impressed by almost winning the second GP of the season (only to be burned by his Ferrari having engine issues). Still, by the end of the season he beat his 4-time-WDC teammate in the standings, he managed 10 podiums including 2 race wins and 7 pole-positions (counting Mexico) -more than anyone else. Not a bad tally for a first season. No wonder that most of FormulaEra rates the lad's maiden season in a top-team so highly, though most of you do see some rough edges still, like NuMiQ (9): "Incredible debut season, very promising driver, but he's show that just like Max in his first years, he has some growing to do. One of the greats for the coming seasons."

    5. Lando Norris - 7.5 (Low: 5; High: 10)
The highest rank rookie of the season is the meme-lord himself, Lando Norris. Though the ranking was as much due to his driving than his charming personality. His 11th place in the WDC was somewhat skewed by a slew of technical issues denying him some solid point finished. Though he did make some errors, he was able to show some real good pace, beating his vastly more experienced team-mates 11-10 in a very close qualifying battle. deprecated rates Norris with a solid 8 and sums up the general consensus: "Despite being really young he was able to hang with Sainz, Ricciardo, and Perez. Good overtaker. Definitely has room to grow."

    6. Alexander Albon - 7 (Low: 4; High: 8)
Our second rookie of the year took a rollercoaster this season, starting off in Toro Rosso and getting promoted after the summer break to the Red Bull team. While this made it hard to judge the Thai driver, he was nothing if not consistent throughout. Almost capping off the season with a great podium finish in Brazil, if it hadn't been for a overly ambitious Lewis creeping up in his blind spot. FairyEmpire rated Albon a 7 and said: "Impressive debut. Solid results with Toro Rosso, immediately competitive in the Red Bull too. This guy could have a great future if he keeps this pace up."

    7. Sergio Pérez - 6.6 (Low: 3; High: 8)
Sergio has been a constant factor in the team formerly known as Force India and this year proved the confidence his team placed in him by turning in consistent solid results in a car that was underdeveloped from the first race. Even starting from the back foot he scored almost double the points that his teammate brought home, beating him 18-2 in qualifying in the process. sixclix rated Sergio a 6: "Perez always seems to seam together good results. He has some real race-pace which he was able to show toward the end of the season. Alas, this year his car lacked a lot of the performance it had last year. Unlike last year, he didn't waste points by crashing into his teammate which, all in all, makes this season seem stronger."

    8. Valtteri Bottas - 6.6 (Low: 4; High: 8)
All the way down in eight we find Bottas 2.0, whose "To whom it may concern: Fuck you" message to everyone that wrote him off as a b-player didn't age well. Despite trading race wins with Lewis in the first four races of the season, he quickly settled back into his old role as a supporting act to the Hamilton-Mercedes show. Never slow over a lap, he matches Lewis in pole-positions (5 each), but overall lost out 14-7 in a year where Merc wasn't as dominant. General consensus in FormulaEra seems to be that if Ferrari hadn't dropped the ball or Max had a better car and better results post mid-break, Bottas could well have been as low as 4th or 5th in the WDC. Perhaps an upgrade to version 3.0 is much needed for next year? MrKlaw rated Bottas a 7, but wonders: "Started strong with Bottas 2.0 but faded mid-season. Is he headed into Barrichello territory?"

    9. George Russell - 6.2 (Low: 2; High: 9)
The Formula 2 champion of 2018 and final of the F2 promotions (Norris and Albon being ranked higher today) is ranked at 9. Impressive considering his car was over a second down at the start of the season and didn't improve much throughout. Williams' lack of performance notwithstanding, George is the only driver on the grid to defeat his teammate in every qualifying (if we discount VER for losing out twice due to penalties), and given his teammate was the legendary Robert Kubica that is at least a solid accomplishment for a rookie. Most people expect him to move up to Mercedes at some point, as long as Williams gives him at least a fighting chance to prove himself. Rahvar rated George a 7: "Hard to say because of the absolute trash car and a seemingly poor teammate."

    10. Daniel Ricciardo - 6.2 (Low: 4; High: 8)
Even Ricciardo had some trouble conjuring up a smile this season as he came to grips with a Renault that found itself down on pace. We saw some rare mistakes as Daniel tried to dive-bomb a few drivers with a car that wasn't as good under-braking as the Red Bull's he drove in years past. Despite that, he wrung the best results he could and beat his teammate solidly throughout, not a bad feat given this was the first time that happened in F1. Hopefully next year the French outfit can put their car where there mouth is and move to the head of the midfield. If he doesn't, FairyEmpire's words might soon ring true: "He must be kicking himself over the Renault deal at this point. He alternated great races with very disappointing ones. I doubt he's happy."

    11. Kimi Räikönnen - 6 (Low: 3; High: 9)
Stoic as ever Kimi spend most of his season in the lower midfield doing his job as solidly as ever. Capped of a solid season with a nice fourth place in Brazil. I wish there was more to say, but I'm sure if Kimi ever expressed emotions it would be utter boredom at this point. Most comments on Kimi either mentioned retiring or paychecks, I wonder why. Tygre rated Kimi a 6 and said: "Just retire Kimi. Go do some rally or something."

    12. Nico Hülkenberg - 5.8 (Low: 3; High: 8)
The Hulk's likely swansong in Formula One could be considered his worst season to date, even though it was decent for the car he was given. For the first time ever he was beaten by a teammate and the entire season he was unable to put in the performances he needed. Almost got the elusive podium everything was expecting from him on a rainy day in Germany, until he unceremoniously crashed out of the race like so many before him. MrKlaw rated him a 6 and echoed the views of many: "Good season and hopefully not the last we'll see of the Hulk."

    13. Pierre Gasly - 5.6 (Low: 1; High: 9)
Gasly started off the season in a top team but somehow performed as if he was still in the midfield. His qualifying pace saw him struggle to connect to any of the other five drivers in the top and sometimes even struggling to stay ahead of the midfield. His demotion to Toro Rosso only seems to have surprised himself, but unlike Daniil Kvyat a few years prior he quickly picked himself off of the floor, putting in good results and even earning a first podium with a second place in Brazil. If there ever was a season of highs and lows, Gasly's takes the cake. deprecated gives him a middling 5 saying: "Really tanked in the Red Bull. Only has a 5 because he seems more comfortable in the Toro Rosso and is doing about as good as he was in the Red Bull with a worse car."

    14. Daniil Kvyat - 5.4 (Low: 3; High: 8)
The Russian returned to the grid after a year in a Ferrari simulator and managed a podium in rainy Germany for Toro Rosso. Despite that, he had a lot of trouble beating his less experienced rookie teammate, who earned a promotion to Red Bull over him and then repeated the same thing with Gasly. Tygre rated him with a 5: "Made to look bang average by a rookie who was destined for the scrapheap only a few months before the season started."

    15. Sebastian Vettel - 5.3 (Low: 2; High: 8)
Yikes. A four-time world champion should not be in the bottom six of this list while driving arguably the fastest car on the grid. Was beaten by his young teammate every step of the way. Ended up below him in the WDC standings, lost in qualifying 11-9, 6-2 in pole positions, and finally scored only one race win to Leclerc's two. Instead, most of Vettel's notable moments of the season were him either crashing into other drivers, or nearly crashing into them. In Canada he made an error and almost took at Lewis to keep the lead (which he then lost due to a penalty for said action), at Silverstone he punted into the back of Verstappen for seemingly no reason at all, and after a long series of inter-team battles both on-track, on the team radio and no doubt off-track, he put both himself and his teammate out of the race in Brazil. hanmik gives Vettel the lowest score of all at a 2, but summaries like most did to say: "Vettel cracked under pressure."

    16. Antonio Giovinazzi - 4.8 (Low: 3; High: 8)
Though technically not considered a rookie due to running a few races in past seasons, we find the lowest of the four full-season debuts at 16. GIO didn't have a great car as the Alfa proved to be quite slow in most races, but he also spend most of the season in obscurity. Not many on-track actions, and overall disappointing results with only four point finishes out of 21 races. deprecated rates Antonio with a 5 and wonders: "He lead Singapore for a hot second so...yay? Other than that what has this guy done? Total wallflower."

    17. Kevin Magnussen - 4.6 (Low: 1; High: 9)
We find the first of our Haas boys all the way down in 17 and for good reason. Only three point finishes and a handful of good qualifying results sum up Magnussen's season well. Most notable for getting in the way of other drivers at almost every race. It is Kevin's good fortune to have an even worse rated driver for a teammate and a terribly forgiving team boss to save his job for another season. FairyEmpire rated him more kindly at a 6 and reasons: "Never easy to judge a performance in a car that alternates great results to bottom of the barrel failures. I think he did fine from what we saw."

    18. Lance Stroll - 4 (Low: 1; High: 7)
Lets get the elephant in the room out of the way first: Lance Stroll is a pay driver. Difference being that generally pay drivers aren't lauded as being good drivers, but Lance was supposed to be the big unicorn. Promoted to F1 at the young age of 18 he did show some decent pace by getting both a front-row qualifying result and a (somewhat freak) podium in his first season. Ever since then he's been trending downward. He's yet to beat a teammate over a season and this year was the worst one yet, often not making it out of Q1. Scoring only 21 points to Perez's 52, Stroll needs to start proving he's as good as he's been promised to be by his management and family. sixclix rates him a low 2 and summarizes most of the comments: "This guy brought up the rear with the Williams' far too often. He got his ass handed to him by a seasoned driver, first against Massa, but that wasn't as bad as this year."

    19. Romain Grosjean - 3.6 (Low: 1; High: 6)
The second of the Haas drivers managed to keep his seat for another year, and many in FormulaEra wonder why. Had a dog of a car, so flew under the radar most of the time. Managed to come in 3rd last in the WDC with 8 points and lost out to his teammate consistently... eagleian rated him a 4 and managed a compliment: "At least he didn't have a 2018."

    20. Robert Kubica - 3.4 (Low: 1; High: 10)
Kubica had a terrible crash, mutilated his right arm to the point where it barely functions and made it back into Formula One for a full season. He was there, and that is a huge accomplishment that deserves a round of applause. Unfortunately, he also proved too slow to keep up. Whether it was his injury, or just his age and a lack of performing at the pinnacle of motorsport for so many years, he simply didn't have any pace. Was a lot slower than his teammate in the slowest car of the grid and got beaten in qualifying at every single race. Astandahl took pity: "Voted 10 because no one thought his return was possible."

    ----
    Teams:
Unsurprisingly, Mercedes won team of the year with a solid 9.2, a league ahead of the field to win their sixth WCC and get another 1-2 WDC result. Ferrari dropped the ball massively in both strategic and technical errors while their drivers managed to fight each other more than anyone else and end up in fifth. While Red Bull come in second after a surprisingly strong first year with Honda. McLaren and Toro Rosso manage the 3rd and 4th after a strong season with podium finishes. Renault disappoint in sixth and Racing Point pay the price for their bankruptcy last year in seventh. Alfa Romeo come in 8th, while Haas also pays for their bad car and performance in 9th. None take the cake more than Williams though, who only get a 1.9 overall as Claire Williams will have to wonder on how she can possibly turn this team back around.
