Very methodical and well thought out. I also enjoy the visual cuts and pacing to reinforce the examples you discuss.
Its a very broad topic on customization and diminishing returns that can occur when you go into such design choices. Especially the major issue of adding one thing and it makes another irrelevant. Its how you get folks calling someone a "poor mans" version of the more capable tool or character.
Keep making these. Its not too long and it makes a lot of good thoughtful points in good ways that fans can get a lot from when it comes to design. I am always for ANYTHING that makes players understand design logic more.
V-skill selection in SFV seems like an interesting way to customize characters though I haven't played the game much since that was a thing.
The support system in Pokken is one of the more interesting ways to customize (though there's still a lot of picks that are straight up better) with support choices coming in pairs that you can switch between rounds and choose the method in which meter is effected. I want to see what they do in a potential sequel.
Thanks! I try to keep stuff pretty short— I think a focused primer on almost any topic can be done in ~5 minutes (though this one went a bit over, unfortunately). I didn't really have space for it, but I think the points you touch on apply a lot to any fighting game and are interesting to think about. Adding a new character to a game takes a lot of resources. Re-balancing your game so more of your existing characters are viable could caught less while netting you (functionally) more characters.
I have very little exposure to Pokken, but it's interesting to hear that they played with idea as well! When coming up with examples, I generally stick with games I'm familiar with to (hopefully) avoid being way off the mark, haha.
Buy it, I'd easily pay double for it. i don't think you'll regret it.

I've been outta the loop with stuff for awhile, but watching DBFZ Worlds this weekend + the upcoming NA release of GBFV has me back on fighters in a big way. Forgot how much I missed playing consistently. Biggest downside is that I moved from Chicago to small-town NC, so I'm kinda at a loss for locals, but I can hopefully get some games in at conventions or something and grind away online when I get more comfortable.
How many games do you all tend to stick with at a time? I've got the issue of being a really...distractable gamer, so I'm really trying to lock in to no more than 3 games to concentrate efforts on, but I find myself dabbling in everything.

That's like every SNK game from the 90's. That's why kof had the option of having basically cheats when you lose.
Garou does that too but I'm stubborn and wanna beat it without cheats. I also know part of the reason I'm sucking is that I don't understand the game on a fundamental level.

Nah, I give you some bosses were problematic, but we had no problem beating the normal opponents at the arcade back in the day. And the bastards put the games way beyond normal.
Yeah, that may be it. Which character are you playing ? You're right on the sense that the combo system is stricter, depending on who you're playing you may have to use cancels and break moves.
Some combos with Terry, from simple BnB to the crazy stuff. The cancel ones start around 55'

ive been ignoring this game because first impressions werent great. I was thinking of DBFZ,BBTAG, Skullgirls not having the wavedash mechanic which is a huge part of marvel's feel. I'll take a peak at the game now or try to get my hands on it before purchasing it, thanks!

Game is insane. Glad that NWAY has a bigger parent company owner now so they got a bit more money for this year's stuff. Seems like they're growing. They're definitely drawing solid attention between the success of their mobile game and BFTG. Wouldn't be surprised if in several years they get even more licensed work across both fronts.

I honestly haven't ruled that out. The first dlc of a season pass had to be ridiculous to sell the whole season. Last time it was Joker that held that role. If Nintendo wanted byleth in and him and another were in the works at the same time I'd say byleth wouldnt be the guy youd save to sell next season with.
I'm not ruling dante out till after the first season pass dlc character is shown because I still feel its Dante who will be announced to kick of this season of smash.
Also hate me if you will but it's been 2 years since vergeben said in that summer rumor that itd be 2 to 2 years before a first trailer got shown and now suddenly mvc at evo on its 20th anniversary and vs game possible teases.

I dream of TVC hard. I always will. Yatterman 1, Polymar, Cashern, Joe the Condor, Ippatsuman....just so many crazy awesome movesets in that title and such flashy characters. Sad they haven't returned.
I still think the Capcom vs CAPCOM Idea would make the most bank and be the coolest though.
Gimmick is classic era capcom vs Modern with stages having both 2d & 3d versions and remixed minigames like mm boss dragon fight but its Rathalos instead of the Megaman dragon or Asura vs SF car or whatever. Roster of modern franchise folk like RE, Monster Hunter, Sengoku Basara, DMC, Dead Rising, Dragons Dogma, Asuras Wrath etc vs roster of classic era stuff like Battle Circuit, Captain Commando, Ghosts n Goblins, Megaman, Ruby Heart, Amingo, Son Son, etc.
Just feels like it'd have the biggest appeal to folks old and new and be a great way to show off the brand in a feel good manner.
That's a cool idea and a great way to bring back some of their old characters.
Played a couple of matches of Garou with someone who had a ping of 245 with me, not sure how much I should've cranked up the rollback settings but, excluding maybe 1 or 2 matches, the experience was decent enough that the proper moves came out well.
I feel the player might've been from Japan, the very first match he picked Tizoc but the name was "The Griffon" and when they won, it was japanese texte but the matches after, it reverted back to Tizoc and english text.

Dante in Smash is more a question of "when" than "if". Bill it "the only game where Bayo and Dante can fight each other" and even people who hate Smash will have to stop and take notice.
Question is, who could replace Polymar.
I hope they'll recycle these movesets somehow. Like, Swan could be a modern June moveset. Yatterman 1 could be Saturn's? Ippatsuman should be Shôma (except for the giant robot... or maybe Natsu would replace it).

Naw, it doesn't happen. They space out your brackets. The release the brackets the week before or so, so if something did slip through the cracks, you can contact them and get it resolved.
You might have a 12pm then a 2pm though. If you are good enough to be moving higher in the brackets, it might become an issue later on into them.
