Hi all, I'm a forum lurker and thought with the fresh start here that I might try actually posting. Normally I'm dissuaded from posting because I feel I don't have much to say that's worth saying, I'm not very knowledgeable about movies, but I sure enjoy watching them. So I'm going to try anyway.

Responding to the questions in the OP:
1. I can't easily answer what my favourite movie is, the most recent I've seen that could compete is probably The Handmaiden
2. Tsai Ming-liang
3. No clear answer, Lee Kang-Sheng comes easily to mind because of his attachment to Tsai but there's certainly more, would need to think on this
4. Drama
5. Again no clear answer, a performance I've seen recently that stood out to me was Zhao Tao's in Mountains May Depart

And to talk about a movie specifically, I've just seen The Foreigner. (and already I struggle to put to words how I felt!) It's a thriller that I didn't find all that thrilling, outside of several bursts of violence centred around Jackie Chan. Pierce Brosnan has the more layered role but I didn't find his part of the story that engaging, and his is the meat of it. It does move pretty briskly and it isn't a difficult watch. Cliff Martinez helps elevate a lot of it with a pretty rad soundtrack, though not one I'd listen to on my own. I'm split pretty down the middle on this one, neither bad nor good, but probably not worth the theatre trip and not a movie I'll ever revisit.

1. What's your favorite Movie?
Lots of favorites, but Days of Heaven reigns supreme. 90 minutes of pure beauty.

2. Who's your favorite director?
Hard to choose. Shortlist has Altman, Linklater, Wenders, and Kiarostami.

3. Who are your favorite actors/actresses?
Have no idea.

4. Favorite Genre(s)?
Love me some drama.

5. What's your favorite performance in film?
Elliot Gould in The Long Goodbye is my favorite, Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence is the greatest.

Glad to see so many familiar faces. Here's to this new era, I think it's gonna be a good one.

Just jump in. The more you interact, the more you can pick up from the posters who have deep knowledge of certain genres/styles/directors/etc.

Or just do like me and post whatever you feel, and eventually you'll be a legend.

Perhaps a silly question, but why does there need to be a new thread every month anyway?
We used to go by
Movies You've Seen Recently |OT| October 2017

Every month we Post our favorite and least favorite watches of the previous month.

It also encourages new people to stop and post what they watched.

so yea we are a monthly Ot just like the Comic book Ot and others

But the whole point of monthly threads was not to end up in the Community Ghetto. Now we're starting there.

My answers aren't certain for the list, but I have some preferences in mind.

1. Don't know my exact favorite film, but Whiplash would be an option.

2. Edgar Wright. His style is extremely enjoyable, and Scott Pilgrim is my favorite example of it.

3. Either J.K. Simmons or Michael Keaton. Keaton's performance in Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Founder were fantastic.

4. I like to watch action, drama, and thriller films.

5. Either J.K. Simmons as Terrence Fletcher in Whiplash, or (more recently) Adam Sandler as Barry Egan in Punch-Drunk Love.

Lady Macbeth 2016
★★★★

Waited almost a year to watch this film so yay! Lady Macbeth is a careful, and well paced film. Florence Pugh delivers an excellent performance that I will no doubt be recalling for best actress nomination of 2016. Overall the film is solid at what it does. It doesn't take any risk, but instead refines well practiced tropes. Avoid the trailers if you can because they give away most of the film.

Hey everyone, good to be here.
- My favorite movie switches constantly between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back.
- My favorite director would have to be Steven Spielberg. I enjoy most of his films quite a bit and always find myself going back to them.
- As far as favorite actors and actresses, some I really like are Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Charlton Heston, Kurt Russell, Faye Dunaway and many more.

As far as first time watches go, so far I've seen 161 movies in 2017.

Just got back from The Florida Project. I feel like it had a slow start, but wow. Funny, depressing and most importantly full of color and life. After this and Tangerine, Baker is definitely on my 'must-see' list going forward.

I went into Lady Macbeth blind when I saw it. Didn't know how it was reviewing, hadn't seen a trailer, and all I knew was the poster and that it was called Lady Macbeth, so even with that little information I had an idea of what it was going to be. I found it very cruel, humorless, and lacking in focus. Out of the three period films I saw this year about scheming women (unless there's more that I'm forgetting), it was easily the one I connected to the least. My Cousin Rachel was much more enjoyable. It's a melodrama, but much better acted that was sly and subversive at times. The, uh, central issue of the film is a bit loopy and ultimately is lacking, but it's entertaining. The best was The Beguiled. It's methodical, brooding, and features three great actors in nuanced and layered performances. Weakest link is Elle Fanning who I tend to think is the weak link in most of the things I've seen her in with the exceptions of Super 8 and Ginger and Rosa (Live by Night, 20th Century Women, the dreadful The Neon Demon...). I understand some of the outside criticisms of the film, the exclusion of certain characters and the war, and where it was filmed, but I think it is one of Coppola's better works, who in my general observation is constantly overpraised and simultaneously crapped on by people.

Currently watching Atomic Blonde again, and I still think it is a mess. I see the promise in it but, boy howdy, is it all over the place.

Tangerine will forever be "the car wash gag" movie for me. It's so frantic and funny and lets itself be until it needs to be touching. Can't wait to see The Florida Project in the next week or so.
