A friendly reminder to people playing for the first time (or 19 years later) to not sell extra equipment until you get to Lindblum a half dozen hours or so in. You get access to a store that lets you combine equipment to make new stuff and it's better than having to rebuy a bunch of stuff to make things.

Also, steal from all the bosses like crazy to get some good equipment and abilities early on. This includes the "boss" like 5 minutes into the game.

Is stealing an action only a certain character has? I've been playing two hours and haven't seen the option yet, but I guess I haven't looked hard enough because I didn't know it existed.

I know, this is probably answered, but as a FFIX noob, can anyone tell me if the 100/100 impressed is worth it?

I tried about 10 times or more last night, and failed miserably, getting no more than about 45. \

If it's not worth it, or the game is easily completable without this, I'd like to just move on and enjoy the game rather than feeling like an idiot trying this damn thing over and over and over. If it's worth it, how the heck can i do this easily?

Help a tired dad of twins with very little time on his hands that wants to relax and enjoy FFIX.

If you're not a completionist, don't worry about it (on other systems, there is an achievement for it). For 100/100 you get showered with money making it easier to afford good items, but if you want more of a challenge starting out with less money then do that.

On the otherhand, the 'moonstone' also rewarded for impressing 100 is useful for a couple things:

- 'Friendly Monsters' side quest
- And learning the ability 'Shell' early which will help with a later Boss battle

Is the 100/100 nobles impressed thing easier in this version? Because I nailed it on my second go and never could get it as a kid.

I always forget to check the bell tower in the Alexandria church for Hippaul's card stash BEFORE talking to Puck. Oh well, you can still get them in Disk 3 right?
this reminds me of the scenes i miss in Treno because i go one way vs the other, as far as those cutscenes that come up randomly that you click on. Too bad you cannot see them all without replaying ? Or can you? They happen at certain moments in the game, also in the black mage village

There are 83 ATEs in the game, and you can get 82 in a single playthrough. The only ones that are mutually exclusive are Home Sweet Home and Hippo's Prize. You can never see both in the same play, but all others are fine assuming you get things "right".

Is there an extensive list of all the abilities, spells and status affects and what they do.

The game explains status affects but it doesn't seem to explain what some of the spells and abilities do

Jegged has a really nice well laid out easy to use guide.

https://jegged.com/Games/Final-Fantasy-IX/Abilities/

Oh and also, if you didn't realise, pressing Select (or - or whatever) when highlighting most menu items will make a moogle appear with more info.

I'm a bit tempted to get this on Switch and finally give it a play. I've always been interested in FFIX, ever since it first came out when I was in middle school. Back then I was an N64 loyalist, but I secretly admired a number of PSX games, and this was one of them. I didn't have the means to play it at the time, but looking at screenshots in game magazines and pirating its music on Napster lit my imagination on fire, leading me to write fantasy stories inspired by the game's imagery, lol. :-)
You absolutely need to get it. It's the best gave ever for a reason, and judging from the other games you like, you're gonna love it

Is it just me or are the complaints about the font/UI REALLY overblown? I almost skipped on the game because of them but looking at screenshots it isn't even that bad, I think I might actually prefer it over the original even.
Yep!

It's actually humorous how much people try to oversell the "problems". And again, I'm not saying they're aren't there, but to render this version of the game "garbage" is some of the most hyperbolic things I've ever read here. And that's saying a lot.

Anyway, playing this game feels likes wrapping myself up in my old favorite blanket.

Hello friends. I'm playing through this game for the first time, having promised myself that I would should the PS4 version ever release on Switch.

I'm playing with a spoiler-free guide to keep track of missables, and this lead to me recruiting a Lickitung in Qu's Marsh. Lickitung, bizarrely referred to with "s/he" pronouns, appears to have the typical blue magic ability. I'm not really a fan of stopping a game to grind out encounters to fill out a movelist, but I know it tends to pay dividends. It doesn't help that battles are dreadfully slow. I plan on collecting abilities passively, maybe seeing if there are must-have/missable abilities in the guide.

Lickitung appears to be a totally optional character. Does the game never make you pass through Qu's Marsh?

You eventually are forced to recruit Quina, but getting them in Qu's Marsh is a grand idea as so many of the Blue spells are really damn good. You can get Mighty Guard really early on, for example.

I missed recruiting Quina early.

The Antlion boss was a lot harder than I remembered, lol.

I've never played the game without getting Quina early. I imagine the game would be quite a bit tougher without it.

Lol I keep reading it as quinoa

Would turning off encounters to avoid the music reset bug be a good idea
Or would that make me too underleveled?

turn it off to get through caves ... then SUPER SPEED and grind Dragon on top of gizamaluke's Grotto
This.

This is the way I will play this game going forward... Well, to be fair, I've always replayed it that way when replaying the PSX version, just without battles off or super speed to make things easier.

Final Fantasy IX is currently the #1 best-seller on the US Switch online store and #2 on the Japanese store. Interesting.

since im gonna be replaying this with the wife for the first time it came out i dusted the old brady games guide for it only to be reminded how shit it is. Half the information is hidden behind PlayOnline.

here is a picture from my guide. all those blue boxes on the side of the page are what im talkkng about. Basically it would have a reference code and you would log into playonline.com and it would bring uo the information, as oppose to you know having it in the strategy guide i bought.

Microsoft emailed me about this "app" and it's permissions after playing it once.

Here I am playing Xbox and I decide to fire it up again, and it won't let me play it become some online service isn't working right. What in the actual fuck.

This needs to be online?

Edit: Working now. Yikes.

To get it to install in the first place I had to remove data, remove external drive, hard reset, and download from the store page.

Another tip for new players: Don't sell each character's starting weapon, even if you're in complete poverty. Keep them in your inventory. Trust me.

The game doesn't outright tell you, but you can use Tents in battle. There's a 33% chance you'll get bitten by a snake that causes blind/mute/poison...but you can also weaponize this by using tents on bosses.

And the best part is, should you have resistance to the status effects in question, it's practically an
~Elixir~
given it heals both HP and MP in good amounts!

Just make sure you use it on a boss at the beginning of a fight, rather then during it.

Is the switch Version worth it?

I heard about the bugs and whatnot. But I feel they won't annoyed me. I just want to know if the game is perfectly playable and won't crash/save bugs. Huge issues, you know?

As someone who got the BULLSHIT platinum trophy for this on PS4, I'm having a blast playing through this again using the cheats and stuff. What a game.

Number one on the Switch eShop! That's awesome!

Hey SQEX, how about some DQ remasters a la the DS/3DS?

If you believe the rumors and leak chatter, then that's definitely happening this year.

No huge bugs, it's a solid port. I'm 12 hours and have had no issues.

It's funny to me that a few minor bugs somehow become MAJOR GAME BREAKING BUGS on forum posts.

The issues are minor. Honestly, as much as I love the music in the game, I'm not totally sure I'd have noticed the bug if I didn't hear about it from somebody else. The controls are fine, or at least pretty much identical to the original with a few (again) minor hiccups.

The port is pretty great. You're safe to buy it if you like this game. Just know that it's still FFIX—it's a bit on the slow side (but I love it nonetheless).

Maybe you made the same stupid mistake as me which is i did it like 5 times thinking that when it didnt show a letter, it was still intending to be one. When I realized it was the directional pad it was easy. I felt really dumb when I figured it out.
Oh my God...yes, this is it. Well, I haven't tried that yet, but yeah, that makes sense. Ugh....
Thanks!! Hopefully I'll get back with positive news :)

Edit: that was it. Still haven't got it, but 85/100 is better :)

Final edit: got it:). You rock!

I think this is where I'm landing. Issues are irritating as they are minor and should be fixable, but Square sitting on them is annoying. Port is fine and enjoyable so far, and yes, worth it.

It's one of the worst ways to play the game, IMO. Original hardware, PS1 Classics release on Vita/PS3, or just emulation are all better ways to experience this game. Just my opinion, of course, but this shoddy port should not be rewarded with an absurd $20 purchase.

I really wouldn't go as far as call it a shoddy port altogether, but I'm going to reiterate what I said earlier...if all you guys would just hold off for a little bit, Square might actually get off their ass and fix the music glitch that still affects several of their current ports of older classics with no signs of improvements for upcoming ports.

But it's already a bestseller on Switch so why should they care to fix it now or ever? Thanks!
