Last night in the first cut to commercial, Jon Batiste & Stay Human played the Bombing Mission Theme from Final Fantasy VII. Gave me goosebumps when I heard it. You can hear it about 11 min into the 1/11/18 episode found here on the CBS website.

If Geo-Blocked, I found a youtube link via reddit but the pitch is unfortunately a little wonky.

Original tune from the game for reference (time-stamped)

This is great. As I've gotten older, I've realized there are gamers everywhere in every profession. I'm glad that gamers can be proud of their hobby nowadays. That wasn't the case when I was growing up.

I wish the official youtube channel would post the actual full clip. One of the prominent tweeters around here should @ the show on twitter about it.

I remember how kinda "obscure" even big games felt in 1997. It's still weird to see it poking out into the mainstream.

I bet kids reading Marvel comics in the 40s or 60s might have felt the same...

You guys should've watched Philippine basketball broadcasts back in the day.

They straight up lifted all their music from Final Fantasy VIII.

I was on vacation in Ireland at a little coffee shop for breakfast and they were playing distant worlds off the store sound system

Wow that's incredible!

His version of Cid's theme is great too

Where can I buy his album? Is this Patreon? I'm confused.

the album is available on itunes or google play.

His patreon says

Very cool. I've always wanted to see someone invite the Kyle Athayde Dance Party onto a late night show to chip in on what may be the greatest rendition of the victory theme ever.

They go off-script @0:50. It is dazzling. God bless the brass.

A Rolling Stone article from 2015 says this about how Batiste got started playing piano:

Rolling Stone said:
He switched to piano in his teens, honing his chops on classical lessons and transcribing songs from video games (favorites include the music to Street Fighter Alpha, Final Fantasy 7 and the "Green Hill Zone" and "Casino Nights Zone" tunes from Sonic the Hedgehog).

I'm guessing it was his idea for that arrangement.

Also, Jon Batiste & Stay Human is an absolutely incredible band. You can't appreciate their chops from the little 10-second bits they show on TV. Went to a Late Show taping a couple years ago and they rocked the place for about 25 minutes before Colbert came out. Then when you leave they're jamming in the lobby on the way out.
