While I haven't had that feeling with this game, I have had that feeling with other games, and I know what it feels like to finally beat such a game after years of it hanging over you.

You can do it!

Haha thanks. I'm at the part where I have the flying airship, and I'm going to get the third huge materia from the underwater reactor in Junon. So far I've had no problems at all, so I'm hoping that's a good sign for the rest of the game.

That's awesome! I'm changing up my play style from my original run, I'm pretty much avoiding every random Battle so I'm underleveled in every fight! It's been fun and a more strategic way to enjoy this game, making you really use the Materia system to it's full extent.

Dang, that sounds tough but interesting. I don't think I'd be able to make it. Hopefully you're able to make it past the door boss. I have a sneaking suspicion that might be the first boss that really tests the limits of that play through style.

I want to play this game so badly as I never have, and Switch it the perfect opportunity for me, but I don't know if I can handle that music glitch :(

The music glitch isn't that bad, to be honest. Most of the songs are 1 or 2 minute loops, so you don't notice that the music restarted since it's constantly restarting in the loop anyway. Plus this game doesn't have any quest waypoint markers, so you end up spending a lot talking to npcs and combing through all the levels trying to find where to go next. So you end up listening to the uninterrupted music loops a lot.

I'm probably like 75% done with the game now, and I think I've heard the entirety of every single song I've encountered. Most of the songs I've heard looped like 100's of times. Of course it would be better if the music glitch didn't exist, but I'm just saying you still end up hearing all the songs anyway.

I finally beat this game after all these years. I got a gold chocobo, but I was too burnt out to get the master materia and beat the last two weapons, so I just skipped straight to killing Sephiroth.

Time for FFIX, I guess.

I have an update on the switch version of the game. Anyone know what's in it?

Edit- d'oh, got confused with a small system update!

Just beat it. Without Knights of the round, but all ultimate weapons and limits. Maain team was between 60-65, sideteam 55-60. Still easy and still an amazing game. Maybe ill get the plat in a few years.

Now: Ff10 on Switch. I am in love with the fffranchise again.

Until they fix the music bug and 360 degree movement in 9, no buy from me

It really sucks that the music bug is still ongoing,m. For me the music has always been such a massive part of Final Fantasy that it's a big I can't look past unfortunately. I really wanted to pick up both FF7 and 9 but they seem to be odd ports, I bought FF7, but I think I will leave FF9 in case they ever get round to fixing it, I probably won't touch again FF7 till they do.

I can use that FF9 money towards FF12 now instead though which sounds like a fantastic port, so it's an easy loss to swallow.

I totally get that the music bug is a huge deal to some, but that just strengthens my bafflement that it doesn't bug me in the least. I don't even see it as a bug, as it's nice to hear songs from the beginning always.

I'm about to go to Junon for the third time, and I think when I originally played this at 13 it was a little confusing for me. Great fun to play it again at 35. So happy it came out Switch.

The main theme is 7 minutes long and the amount of time between random battles is like, what, 15 seconds? You can only really hear most of it if you stand still or are in a vehicle.

It didn't really bother me either. Having the full theme broken up constantly by battle music isn't the ideal way to listen to it either.

Hey there, been playing through the game on the Switch and the game is freezing just after getting on the submarine to chase the Junon huge materia. Has anyone seen anything about this or know of a potential workaround?

Edit: I guess fourth time is the charm!

I was on the final boss, a little underpowered but feeling good, and the game freezes! This is the first time ever a Switch game froze for me. Of all the timing...

I'm ready to move on FFVII, let me go!

I've been following a guide to try and optimise my way through this and make sure I get missable loot and stuff. TBH, it's kinda sucking my enjoyment out of it as I make sure I grind specific enemies in some parts to get gear etc. Should I just forget the FAQ and go with the flow? How difficult does it get, is there anything I could truly miss that I would regret?

The game isn't difficult at all, if you just follow the critical path, you're still more than equipped enough to beat everything in the story. Optional weapons and materia are really only needed if you're going to do the side content and superbosses.

Plus, once you hit disc/part 3, you can just go around doing whatever you like before tackling the final dungeon.

Awesome, cheers. I'll stop sweating the little things and just enjoy the ride :)

That's the way to do it. Once you've played through the game once, replaying it as a completionist (assuming you like it) would go faster, anyway--so you may spend no more time total in two playthroughs than you would in one plodding completionist run.

Finished it this morning. Found Iron Giants harder than the final boss.

Decided to try and watch Advent Children after (found it on YouTube), but it's like... really bad. Not sure if I'll continue.

Hope to move on to FFXII soon, but the price is pretty steep.

If you're going to watch AC, watch the Complete version. It adds extra scenes that provide a lot more context to things that are happening and is overall a much better movie because of it.

I know FFVII's ending is a bit abrupt in some ways but it's frankly better to leave things off here IMO. Advent Children is... bad. Personally I'll never rewatch it.

But I'll echo what folks have already said -- if you're going to watch it then watch Complete. It's... better. A bit.

Patch is out on Switch that fixes the music bug!!!

Edit: in response to the previous post, yes. I have a save file before the Temple of the Ancients, and it's completely fixed.

No idea what else was patched, but at least the music bug is now squashed.

Going to start replaying this game. Is there a good guide to missables? It's been a while and I have to admit I never finished the last dungeon somehow, way back then. A good guide would be one that even includes missables events or dialogue.

Thanks in advance.

Edit:Seems like the best guide recommended around is the walkthough by AbsoluteSteve.

Ok the Switch version is...not good. It doesn't even run at 30fps. It hovers just below that or has serious frametime issues. It's really distracting.

IX is fine, but the input lag is horrible.

Am I really the only one noticing the framerate issues with the Switch port? It's really, really obvious, yet no one seems to be mentioning it.

I'm gonna boot up the PC version tonight just to compare.

This video shows off the issue:

Notice how the framerate hovers around 29 fps and never actually locks to the refresh rate of the Switch, which lends to a lot of noticeable judder.

It would be great if Digital Foundry brought the issue to light, since maybe Square might respond to it then.

I'm trying to play this through fully for the first time... I've had two crashes since leaving Midgar though. Once right after getting out of the second memory sequence in Kalm and then a second time after grinding for a long time to get a damn Chocobo and getting into the mines after. Both had pretty substantial amounts of playtime lost.

Switch version playing in handheld mode.

I also had some crashes when I played it some weeks ago on the Switch. Are you using x3 speed a lot? I suspect that causes the crashes.

Yeah, I am. I figured that was the issue, but I'm going to keep using it and just try to save as often as I can. I'm now a bit further in and haven't had any more crashes.

I'm thinking of getting this on Switch? Is the port all good?
I know of one minor issue and one minor difference from the PS1 version.

Issue: Battle menu FPS is 15FPS instead of 30 or 60, which makes the menus feel less responsive than they should and makes two characters limit breaks harder to nail perfectly. It's not a major or really noticeable issue.

Difference: The characters' heads are based on non-final versions of the models, so their eyebrows always show and look weird. Not an issue at all, just a difference.

It's arguably the best port of the PS1 games.

I noticed that the game is on sale now for $7.99

Are there any significant differences between the Switch and XB1 versions?

Just wrapped up the game this afternoon for the first time despite a half-dozen attempts since 1999. I think I built up a lot more lore in my head after hearing about the narrative for years back in elementary so I was bit surprised how little some elements played into the campaign (such as Zack) but I was still impressed overall. That ending is still a fantastically bold finale regardless of what later the material does to negate it.
