Full disclosure: I have played none of the games listed here.

I'm listing them and making this thread because I understand all of them are highly-acclaimed games (I don't know as much about M&M7), and almost all of them are among the most highly-acclaimed games in their respective series. The seventh entries in FF, DQ, and M&M also all came out in the late 90's where as the seventh entries in Ultima and Wizardry came out in 1992. So maybe this is kind of a contest between the best of each classic RPG franchise.

    Based on what I know:

    • Final Fantasy VII basically popularized RPGs to a whole new audience and sort of introduced the cinematic high-budget RPG.
    • Dragon Quest VII was the first PlayStation DQ and came out around the same time as FFVII.
    • Ultima VII today is still known for its complex NPC AI system that I'm told rivals that of games like Skyrim and goes beyond most RPGs made since.
    • Wizardry VII is supposedly the last "classic-style" Wizardry. I think that one game everyone says is "Cleve's game" was supposed to be a spiritual successor to W7, but I might be mixing it up with something else.
    • I think Might & Magic VII is one of the most popular M&M games.

Oh god DQ7 and MM7 are two of my favorite games of all time so that was a tough call. But I went MM7.

I have a feeling nobody else in this thread will share my dilemma.

Ultima VII was endlessly replayable as a kid and offered the freedom to do pretty much anything.

Final Fantasy VII is fine (great music and mostly great characters) but it's no Ultima.

Too bad Ultima completely shit the bed after Serpent's Isle.

Ultima VII is the best, and one of the most important games, of all time.

  10. I just wanted to pop in and say that I like the idea of this thread very much, lol.

    Good job, OP :)

DQVII is great! FFVII is ok too.

    DQ7 was released in 2000.

  13. "Compare these randomly put together games that happened to be the 7th entries in known RPG series"

Yeah I don't wanna go down that road. FF7's fandom alone overpowers anything else so it's easy to see where this will go.

I will however say that DQ7 is one of the best and probably most underrated DQ's out there. The 3ds version makes it much friendlier to people put off by the original one. Part of its charm is its leisurely-paced worldbuilding.

Ultima 7 is still the best RPG experience I have ever played, and I grew up playing and loving JRPGs.

    certainly not DQ VII...
I think this is slightly skewed as I'm betting not many people have played any other games on the list beside FF7 ... at least I haven't haha

Many of these games are good, but Ultima 7 is easily the most groundbreaking of them all.

It introduced systems and ideas that wouldn't really be picked up broadly until decades later.

As much as I love dq 7 and ff7 being pretty low on my ff list, it's still the king. Had a blast with that game

  22. Easily Ultima VII for me, but I have to admit Might & Magic VII had me evaluating the option for a second.
There were few things in the game I never really liked (like the real-time spam-friendly combat), but the highs were absolutely stellar.

Never really liked FF VII despise finishing it and I never played DQ VII but my experience with DQ VIII was basically a narcotic in software form.

    What's your favourite?
    • X-Men: Apocalypse
    • Apocalypse Now
    • [REC] 4: Apocalypse
    • Resident Evil: Apocalypse

  24. Final Fantasy VII for me. I was my fifth ever JRPG behind Shining Force 2, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Wild Arms, but it was my favorite of the bunch.

Ultima 7 all the way. It was one of the few games where if you thought you could do it, you pretty much could. If you could bake bread and forge weapons, why couldn't you rob the mint?

You do have the kill the mint master temporarily though.
    1. Loot the key, and run into the mint.
    2. Start pillaging, thankfully the inventory screen pauses the game so you can open all the drawers around you.
    3. Cast 'Help' (Kal Lor IIRC?) - should wipe the aggro
    4. Make your way back to the mint, and drag the body back to Lord British who can Resurrect the mint lady.
    5. She will make her way back to the mint and you can exchange your ill gotten gains for big $.

  34. I...

Other than Final Fantasy VII and maybe Dragon Quest VII, who the hell has even heard of those other games? LMAO

You can tell how many people haven’t played Ultima VII in this poll. It was massively ahead of its time and smacks the competition here.
