It's all over the place. You'll never get a consensus on "best" FF.
VIII did a lot of things differently that pissed off a lot of traditional fans. It was also a bold leap forward for the series' presentation that can be felt today. Personally, I'm a big fan.
God I need the 3rd to hurry up. I can’t wait to play this.

Thanks, I remember playing it after VII when i was about 12 (Think it was out about a month) but don't remember much of it
Looks great, it's kinda awesome to see how much effort was put into all the little animations and character tics.
To be honest the mods that add realistically proportioned characters to the overworld of FFVII look terrible IMO. The maps were built for the little chibi blocky guys. They could have updated the battle models, though.
Imo, it was better than VII but not as good as IX. I put it above most of the main games (IV, IX, XIV, and VI are the only ones I would put higher than it).
Damn the world building in this game was so fucking great. Thought of everything.It looks so silky smooth, really good work on the enemy models, too.

None of them is better than IX. The problem with VIII is that is all over the place. Convoluted systems and what not.
Only thing I wish was different was the backgrounds. They look sorta out of place when compared to the new character models. And maybe it would have been awesome changing it to full widescreen too. But oh well!
VIII is damn near the best FF until the final act, in my opinion. I don't know if I don't like where the story goes, or maybe how it is executed, but it just loses that tension and fun to me. The last actish feels like a different game.
cant wait to grind these strange fish thingies near balamb garden and to play triple triad for 30 hours and then use cypher to lev up the GFs and make a level sub 10 run or something. game is so broken.
Right? I'm looking forwards to this, I haven't played FFVIII in a while and I can't wait to hear some of my favorites in the moment.
20 years later and I’m reminded that VIII’s cutscene direction is still master-class.

Final Fantasy 5? I love that game personally, but I never hear about people listing it as one of their favorites.
well you heard it now.
real answer: V was released in the west very late. however it has perfected the job system and many conventions which are referenced in later FF games. also its certainly regarded as one of the best in japan.

I respect that though, there's a lot to love in FFV. I'm currently playing through it for the Four Job Fiesta, feeling pretty OP with my WM/Sum/Ran/Dan team.

I personally hate the draw system and junctioning and all that shit. So yeah, I personally dont like the combat.
It does have some interesting story events though which I really liked.
I feel it's a matter of how the characters and the overall plot clicks with each person. Is definitely a flawed game in terms of battle system and some other mechanics, but it got the best presentation and setpieces of the series. Something that sorely lacks in the last FF games, specially XV.
For me along VII is my favorite FF game.
Ehhh... I would put XIII and XV as more divisive.
With VIII, even if you don’t care for the gameplay style (Junction, no item chests, Gil comes through ‘paychecks’) or story, I think most would agree the game is still of very high quality.
Wow it looks pretty nice, kinda wish they showed some of the later limit breaks I was kinda hoping to see Zell's Final Heaven with the cleaner look.
It didn't need to be anything. They wanted to make ff7 but a different game and they did. You wanna play remastered ff7 mods exists you will be fine
