even doing that jelly farming trick in Henne Mines my characters were still losing some hp even though they seem to be reflecting everything to the point when I came back some had fainted... I'd set up a gambit to use high potions and they'd clean it all out

Sometimes you can get confused, even with the Reflect on, and I found one of my guys was often killing the others. Just had to remove all weapons and pop shields on everyone to remove that aspect. Plus I made sure I was on gold medal drops, which restore health and MP, add protect, etc.

Just got to Mt. Bur-Omisace, still loving the game. It's a real pleasure having this game not be spoiled openly across the internet, I have no idea what to expect with the story. Loving the lore of the world and seeing how things play out.

IIRC, because of how hard required EXP scales, it requires a similar amount of EXP to get every character to level 70ish than it does to get everyone to level 99.

Probably a better option, especially of.you don't want to auto-level for hours.

Is there any merit to level up characters equally?
FFVI always had me doing it in all games, but in my recent plays of FFVII and FFIX, I didnt to no penalty.

If your party dies you can bring the reserve party members to fight. You get a game over when they all die.

But if you want to do everything with only three then go for it, you'd just have less options in terms of jobs

Thanks. Makes sense. Sounds probably more to use everyone then.

Can you change jobs in the new version and if so, when/how? I'm burdened with crippling indecision here.

Some thoughts on the game now that I believe I passed the 1/4 or 1/3 mark, which was when I
acquired the Dawn Stone and unlocked my first Esper and a second job for everyone.

-It's clear to me that this game is focusing more on plot and lore than characters. That is fine, although it does make everyone feel a little samey (Balthier is a standout, though). Definitely a contrast from the strong personalities of the FFX cast. I do like how everyone is hyper-competent, though (Vaan doesn't exist).

-All that said, I seriously have no idea why Vaan and Penelo are sticking around now, especially the latter. They are just kids who are completely in over their heads. I dunno, hopefully their character motivations are made clear soon.

-The game itself has a rather... dry (?) atmosphere. The color palette looks very homogenized, and a lot of places you visit are places that would normally be devoid of life (desert, mines, ruins). So far, the only exception I've found is the Giza Plains. I don't have a problem with it as I'm still having fun, but I want more wonder to be present in the world of Ivalice.

-As a programmer, I feel as if the Gambit system is made for me. I honestly wish we could create more complex gambits, frankly. The amount of ingenuity you can achieve with it is rather remarkable. It honestly baffles me that anyone would consider the system a negative when the game is very clearly designed around its use.

So yeah, I'm having fun and combat seems like it'll really open up now.

One funny detail I noticed is when the scenery suddenly changes from desert to wet grassland when you go from the Westersand (and presumably Estersand) to Giza Plains. Not even Zelda games have such an extreme environment lol

Gambits are fine, although I would have liked if they incorporated some dialogue during battles. Even during the victory pose after boss battles, nobody says anything. It doesn't really promote chemistry between the characters.

Vaan apparently wants answers to his brother's death which is a bit flimsy. Penelo just wants to follow along I presume.

Yeah, the color palette looking kind of homogenized is right on the money. I love XII overall but while it is graphically more impressive than X I do find X's colorful Spira more... subjectively impressive?

No real qualms with XII's designers going with their guns here; if this is Dalmasca then this is Dalmasca! It's a great game world. It just could have used a bit more splash, I guess.

Dalmasca is a small part of the world of Ivalice. look at how Giza plains is different during the Dry and the Rains for something close to Rabanastre. Not to mention all the other areas in the game

first time playing this.

Just got my full party and realized there's no exp share with the party members not used, do you guys stick to 3 party members for the entire game or get them all leveled up evenly?

Also, I honestly feel like I fucked up choosing the jobs for these guys :/

Your reserve members don't receive EXP, but they do receive LP. Even low-leveled characters can be powerful with Augments and Equipment.

Most seem to level only three, but I definitely prefer leveling everyone, especially with a job system meaning every character has a different niche. EXP required per level also scale very hard as your level grows. (Getting three characters to level 99 requires a similar amount of EXP as leveling six to 75ish)

If you're playing on Switch or Xbox, you can switch jobs at any time.

I'll just keep them all at the same level.

Job switching sounds good, I think I could have chosen better jobs for a couple chars.

Thank you!

I'm at the final boss with everyone at level 37 but I don't think this will work out with more attempts. Agreed?!

As I stated before, the game really became rushed and weak on the narrative side after reaching the capital (while it was okay-ish up to that point, even good sometimes). The gameplay, Gambit system and character development worked to the very end, but that's about it. There's no other modern mainline Final Fantasy game I enjoyed less, but it was still an acceptable to good game for me. I never cared about the fate of this universe much, as neither story nor what drives the character action forward was told in a gripping way, unfortauntely. At least I can say I finally played FF XII then.

Managed to steal a 2nd Ribbon in the Trial Mode. First one took like 40 tries. Second one about 7 tries and I almost quit to the title screen then I noticed Balthier stole 2 items..

Loggjaw Trial Stage 49. If you are not successful just quit. Go back to the trial mode and reload the auto save file and try again and keep rinsing this till you get a ribbon then you probably going to have to beat all them bosses.

Wondering if anyone can give me a hand with figuring out what I'm missing about this sidequest. I'm looking for a piece of a windvane; I've talked to all three characters involved in figuring out its location, I went to the place they're talking about, but when I examine the cactus it should be buried under it just tells me there's nothing there. I've even looked up its location just to make sure I'm right. One answer online that I've found says that all of the characters involved in the quest should be in a huddle outside the west gate of Rabanastre once you've properly started the quest, but they're not doing that, either; I've tried talking to them all again but they just say the same things. Any advice?

Just got the ability to add a 2nd job as well as Espers...overwhelmed with decisions to make.

Some combos I have a good feel for but other characters I just might throw whatever on.

Also have been completely ignoring the hunts, need to figure out who I need to talk to/what to do to get on the ball with that.

The rainy season in Giza. It will periodically flip back and forth throughout the game. It's a nice touch on what really happens in a desert during the rainy season.

You know, with all the talk of a FF7 remake I wish they'd pulled Matsuno out of the asylum and give him the resources to remake this game as he intended.

It's been AGES since I played this game last (2006 around launch?) and so I have forgotten just about everything other than originally liking it.

I'm about ~8 hours in - just got off a ship after fighting my first Judge - and I'm now back to "home base."

My party has changed like 27 times since starting the game, and for the life of me I can't remember who ends up going after this? I want to focus on three party members, but don't wanna lose out if someone leaves in a few hours. Who's safe to level up and start putting effort into?

***

Also, all shops unlock their weapons based on story progress, correct? Is there anything else driving the gear available to purchase?

Music is a personal choice. Original should be the ps2 sound while orchestrated is redone and then there is OST version which is another mix.

Your level is insanely low, wow. I remember years ago back on the PS2 I replayed the game and decided to just do solely the story, and I think I was low 40s for the final boss and it was definitely a long battle that was mostly healing constantly with a few shots in especially as the battle went on.

What's a better choice for music? Original or reorchestrated?

Short answer: Reorchestrated.

Long answer: In some games like FFX the reorchestrated version took too many liberties, thereby changing the style of some of the songs too much and making some of them worse. This has led to some concerns are reorchestrations. However, in FFXII the music is very faithfully recreated, except using higher quality instruments. It is representative of what the composer intended had it not been for technical or budget limitations in the original release.

Got a few questions:

Is there somewhere to easily get teleport stones? Maybe I'm still too close to the beginning? (Saved right before Shiva)

Even with loot, I'm always short on cash. I'm not buying potions anymore and only using cure, but it's still not possible to equip good stuff (unless I would grind, which I don't really want to). Does the game just comparatively give less cash for monsters?

Once you have access to airship flights out of the aero dome, you can choose a leisure flight and buy them from one of the attendants on the ship

I still think they butchered Giza Plains. But that's my one complaint

Steal and poach all the time. Sell your past equipment that you have more than one of except accessories. Open chests more often

I've read the past few pages and see people talking about a gambit setup with
* Foe: HP = 100% -> Steal
I found that this is the wrong way to go about as you'll need to attack every enemy in a group before your thief starts to attack. What I recomend instead is the following with your party leader:
* Foe: HP < 90% -> Attack
* Foe: Any -> Steal
And then have allies set to target parties leaders target. As party leader you'll auto target an enemy and get a steal in, while your other party members will target and damage the enemy. Your thief will then switch back to attacks and you'll all finish off an enemy. The best part is once the first enemy is gone then the thief will start stealing from the next enemy in the group as the enemy will still likely be 100%.

I havent seen this brought up in the past few pages so I wanted to get it out there.

-All that said, I seriously have no idea why Vaan and Penelo are sticking around now, especially the latter. They are just kids who are completely in over their heads. I dunno, hopefully their character motivations are made clear soon.
.

This one is pretty obvious. Vaan was a street kid/sewer rat that fantasized about being a sky pirate, ran into an actual one and is sticking around to live out the fantasy adventure he's always dreamed about. Penelo is sticking around because of her close friendship/relationship with Vaan. She's there for him, though the plot doesn't make this explicit.

The game isn't really "about" those two- they're simply regular people that got caught up in a wider story bigger than themselves.

I'm at the exact same part. It's my second time with the game, my first time I gave up after never fully getting the gambit system and over relying on some powerful combo attacks for bosses.

I love the focus on story more than characters. They are all just small actors in a much much larger story. I love the inclusion of Vaan and Penelo too, as they are of the nameless masses (us), tagging along in an extraordinary adventure. I hope Vaan never becomes "the chosen one fused from Mist destined to save the world" or something, and stays a relative nobody.

I think my enjoyment is reliant on never allowing myself to be lazy with the gambit system. It's to be properly thought about an used, and then battles feel so peaceful.

I'm finding myself play on fast speed a lot. I'm really glad they added that.

I went IX→VII→XII and I'll probably go X/X-2 next. These games are all perfect on Switch.

*2nd to last town*

is still one of the best towns in JRPGs. Bustling, lots of NPC's (I actually love the 'chop' quests), feels huge thanks to the background pieces, awesome music, I could go on and on.

Good point. It really isn't a spoiler at all but I like to be safe. I will edit!

Thanks, sorry if I sounded cold.

Although that was karma for me, as when I replied I saw what town it was, had been there on my first play, and hadn't known it was the second last town!

I look forward to getting there this time.

Got this game on 1X. Forgot how god-tier Sakimoto was (shame on me). He did work on the reorchestrated soundtrack, right?

Cuz it sounds A LOT like the original soundtrack, bar a few exceptions.
