The first time I played FF13 I got to chapter 11 and was so burned out on the combat that I quit the game.

The second time I played FF13 I wiped like a dozen times on Lightnings Summon boss fight and I quit the game.

Maybe one day I should try it again. I haven't played it in forever.

Looks like Vanille's summon is my next roadblock. Using the debuff class seems to help spike the bar a little bit but good lord. This game just constantly throws stuff at you to make the game as grindy and tedious to play as possible.

Like, why the fuck can't another party member join? Vanille isn't apart of my main party so she just gets annihilated if the summon boss attacks her. If I get stuck in the sentential/medic roles, I run out of time. Ugh.

Feels like I'm just going to have to grind more. So tedious.

Just finished XIII-2, people weren't kidding when they said it was short compared to XIII, just under 30 hours after finishing the final boss and credits. Still some endgame content I want to cover of course but still, surprising.

And yeah, the ending has got me fucked up. So thankful that wasn't spoiled so many years after release.
Oh, just wait till you get all 160 fragments and THEN beat the game. XIII-2 has one of the ballsiest 100%-completion endings ever.

Man. Now I've been stuck on the chapter 11 boss for about two hours. I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Thinking about just watching the rest of the game on YouTube. I don't even really care anymore. This game isn't fun at all.

I tried to use a guide but it recommends Fang/Sazh/Vanille and I only have Fang with upgraded weapons/accessories. Vanille gets one shotted by any attack the boss uses. I'm out of the items you can use to auto buff at the start of battles. I can't believe you can't buy these. What the fuck.

Barthandelus ?

All I can remember is de-buffing the boss and buffing everyone else. Can try swapping Fang for Lightning too if you wish

I realized I don't do enough damage on the boss before I hit the 20 minute doomed time limit. Decided the only way I'm going to beat this game is if I grind like crazy (5+ hours) to buff up my characters. A video I watched on the fight had most of the characters at 5k HP. I'm only at around 2700-3100 per character. Getting more HP should help me stop swapping to medic every ten seconds during the fight, which destroys my damage output.

I backtracked back to the beginning of the chap 11 dungeon with an easy grinding spot (like 20k CP every few minutes). Not sure how I'm going to get the mats for the weapon upgrades though. I read using Sazh and Vanille for their buffs/rebuffs help during the boss fight but their weapons are only level 1. That puts them at a pretty big disadvantage (like two hundred magic below my main crew). I wouldn't mind getting Lightning's weapon a little higher, too.

Wish you got money from every fight. I don't think I've cracked 50k gil the entire game so far. I'm hoping grinding works or I really will just dump this and watch the ending on YouTube. The story really isn't even great or interesting. I just want to know what happens and then start 13-2. Hoping its not as hard as this one was. It's been a brutal experience for me.

Grinding actually paid off. I also repeated a mission over and over to grind money to upgrade accessories and got their weapons to stage 2.

Yay.

A friend said I'm really close to the end since Chapter 12/13 are short. Hopefully this was the last thing in my way.

On chapter 13. Just gotta get through this little mini dungeon thing and I'm done right? Hopefully I don't get my ass beat too badly and have to grind again. Ugh.

Edit: Going to have to grind. The regular enemies are taking 2+ minutes to fight and I'm getting destroyed. I guess I'm going to have to go back to Gran Pulse? The sacrifices at Edenhall are equally as tanky and a grind to fight. Ugh. FF13, annoy as hell to the bitter end. I have no money or components left so that's a great time.

I'm telling you switch it to Easy and you'll never have to grind again haha. I did that in Chapter 9 and it was so much more enjoyable after that. Because I went through Chapter 11 in a few hours I was super underleveled for 12 and 13 but on Easy it basically just makes the game play at normal difficulty.

I can't do this. I have data caps and don't want to go through the hassle of downloading another version. I'm just going to have to find somewhere to grind. :(

I just finished FF13. Whew.

Just about had a heart attack when the final boss triggered a doom counter.

I don't think this was a good game. It has some moments but that difficulty was way too tough for me. I'm still not quite sure what the hell happened during the story but I can kinda piece it together.

The OST is waaaaay too brilliant for this game. It was so good. Completely wasted for this. Lol.

I guess it's onto FF13-2. I paid $15 for all three games combined, so I might as well get my $5 worth and play the next one. Hoping it's not too bad difficulty wise.

Thanks, for bearing with my rage posts. Haha.

Good news is that XIII-2's the easiest of the three (albeit with a small number of bizarre difficulty spikes). This time it isn't game over if your party leader dies, leveling past a certain point isn't gated, getting preemptive attacks is a cakewalk, and you get a full party of three very early on. There's an addictive monster capturing/leveling/fusing mechanic as well. Give it a try; it's a very different beast than XIII but also a comfortably familiar one at the same time.

I think I'm very close to the final boss in FF13-2?

Just met Lightning for the first time with Serah at the Pulse village in 700 AF.

I know that episode 6 is the finale and I'm probably close to the end of 5 right now.

I liked the appearance of Fang and Vanille. It's nice that everybody came back. I didn't get to see Sazh though. I assume he's at the casino area because he pops up in the preview for it. I ran around the entire area and didn't see him so I left.

I recall reading that you need to collect all 160 fragments for the true ending, is that correct? I really don't want to do that. Lmao. I only have like 40/160 right now. I'll probably just YouTube it if it's not some huge thing.

I like the game a lot more than FF13. Easy mode pretty much makes the battles nothing so you can just tap A to auto battle and win. I'm usually staring at my phone the entire time. Lol. It's a pretty lazy sequel though. So many reused assets from the monsters and NPCs to the same exact environments.

The OST has been great though. Not a fan of the weird ass screamo boss battle theme though. It's so out of place.

You're welcome! It's crazy the amount of players that will be turned away by the difficulty, not sure why it didn't get patched into the normal release.
I just beat a boss on chapter 10 or 11, whole-le -shit, even on easy iy took me 10 tries, changing and casting slow on him not stop. If you dont have 80% heatlh, you dead after his attack.

Man. The final boss is fucking bullshit. I can manage the battle and then it casts Dying Sun and one shots my entire party.

Just a ridiculous difficulty spike that's not seen until now. I'm on easy, I've leveled up, I have good weapons and accessories equipped and it's all for nothing. What shit.

Edit: Just beat it. Whew.

Hahahahaha. What a terrible ending. That wasn't worth the journey at all.

Noel had 4500 est. Serah had 4100 est. My monster had 5000 est.

We barely survived some of the Dying Sun/super attacks after switching to sentinel. Noel and the monster died multiple times throughout the fight and I had to revive them.

Entering chapter 12, all characters have 3700+ HPs, sticking to first weapons maxed out. lets see how this goes. Playing on easy, which is not as easy as I would expect.

WTF at the final boss, I beat the first one, but only got the second boss to about 2/3 health, I've tried everything. He cast these spells that I did not equip my guys right, I sold everything. Guess I'm fucked, and to youtube the ending. Can I buy something beside antidope? spent 4 hours on the final, I leveled up my peeps wrong.

Finally started 13 on Wednesday and I'm at the start of chapter 9 and about 20 hours in. So far the summon fights have been the hardest. I'm also really loving the game. Vanille is the only one who is semi annoying, but she's starting to win me over. Really love Lighting and Snow has grown on me as well.

Unless it's possible to transfer your save file to PC, use this mod to unlock Siegfried, then transfer back, or otherwise obtain a save from someone who unlocked the outfit way back when...no, probably not. :( The demo upload feature died when Outerworld was taken offline long ago.

I don't know why devs keep doing this. (Don't even get me started on the Aerith garb, which not even PC modders have been able to add back in...)

Updated the OP a little bit! Didn't change a whole lot, but I added a really cool map of Cocoon done by atlas-v7x (which I meant to add a couple of months ago-- oops...). Not sure when, but sometime this week, I'd like to expand the glossary section a bit with more terms and locations.

Also, I'm getting the itch to dive back into the games again. I didn't play as much as I'd have liked to back when they first became playable on Xbox One due to the hectic holiday season, but I played a bit more of FF13 the other day and immediately wanted more. Feels like a good time to finally get back on track with the trilogy.

I recall the PC version ran like crap, with these weird sporadic frame drops frequently.

Does the BC game run better?

But the video quality is still below PS3 bluray right?

I can't speak much for the second and third games, but the first game has ran flawlessly for me on my Xbox One X; steady 30FPS, which I have a hell of a time achieving on PC. I know XIII-2 got an update at one point, but I'm not sure what it was for exactly.

As for the cutscenes, I can again only speak for the first game, but they went back and replaced the old 360 cutscenes with much higher quality videos for the Xbox One release. I believe it's technically a little bit worse than the PS3 cutscenes' quality, but playing on my 4K TV, they still look really nice and I can't find any faults with them. They're miles better than the original 360 videos.

yup video quality is below ps3 bluray since it's still compressed

these iirc are the roughest areas for frame rate especially on the original systems it ran on

Just reached Chapter 12 in FFXIII. I bought this game on launch day on PS3 back in the day, but never made it past Chapter 6 as I put it on the back burner for other releases at the time. The game clicked with me on this playthrough hard and I'd say it's been an excellent experience up until now. One observation is that the game could've benefitted from introducing Gran Pulse's openness a lot sooner in the game, or simply used it as a hub world.

I'm a little puzzled at the difficulty complaints, as up to this point, most of the challenge has been finding a good paradigm strategy over all other factors.

I haven't had much difficulty with XIII but hoo boy Dahaka was killing me. I just beat him last night after struggling for weeks. Maining Fang as sentinel was the key for me, along with all the buffs from Sazh.

I went away from this game for a while but I am really going to try to finish it. Definitely enjoyable even if the story makes no sense to me.

The games are pretty good, and they also look very nice on the X. And I definitely recommend downloading the international release; I personally found a few parts of the game to be frustrating (though I know not everyone did, so ymmv on that), so having the ability to play on an easier difficulty is pretty nice.

Enjoy the ride!

I am enjoying my replay of FF13 so far.

I laughed out loud on a couple of occasions when, with the game being obviously super linear for most of the chapters, characters make comments unintentionally emphasizing the linearity.

(sees a small fork in the road, but one of which is obviously just a small dead end on the mini-map leading nowhere)
Character comments:
"A fork in the road .... BUT WHICH WAY SHOULD WE GO ???????!!???"

Also, in the Gapra Whitewood there are these obnoxiously bright beams "WHICH WE CAN USE AS GUIDES!!!" despite of them being completely unnecessary and pointless since you literally follow the path.

I quite like the art direction, soundtrack, and battle system.

What's the final word on 2 and LR. How do I decide if they are worth the time?

If you do decide to get the DLC please note:

There's a bundle up for FFXIII-2 that covers everything that isn't delisted except for two weapons and a costume for Serah (Azreal Bow, Seraphic Bow, and Style and Steel outfit). $18.99 combined for all.

There are bundles for Lightning Returns as well but it's a little less user friendly. To get everything for it you'll need to buy the FF Legends Pack, Samurai Collection, Premium Collection, Yuna FFX, and Tomb Raider. Combined total of $38.00. Plus an extra $3.99 if you want the Japanese voice optional pack.

Honestly of the two I prefer the DLC in FFXIII-2 as the colosseum fights are quite difficult and pretty damn fun.

Also if you're coming from the PC version Aerith's schemata is available as dlc in the 360 version of Lightning Returns. This was removed for some reason in the PC release though I know there was some attempts to mod it back in.
All the DLC delisted and not included in the DLC bundle for FFXIII-2 has been relisted, likely by accident, and can be bought. Just click the link and look down at the Add-ons and click the ones listed not included in the DLC bundle.
