https://popbastion.com/2018/09/07/final-fantasy-xv-sales-top-8-1-million-worldwide

Final Fantasy XV total sales has surpassed 8.1 million units worldwide, Square Enix confirmed today. These sales likely include the original release, Royal Edition, and Windows Edition.

Square Enix also announced that they plan to celebrate the second anniversary of the game at Tokyo Game Show.

For reference, last month (Aug 7) it was 7.7m: https://www.resetera.com/threads/fi...million-copies-sold-fastest-selling-ff.60414/

It only sold this well because of the Final Fantasy name.

Getting ever closer to that 10 million goal Tabata and his team set out for. It sounded farfetched at the time (even to them), but they figured it was a good goal to set their eyes on. At this point, I think lifetime sales might actually hit that.

FF9 selling less than 8, 10-2 and 13 is a travesty

congrats to Square Enix, now PLEASE move on from FF XV, and don't let Tabata near anything FF-related again

XIV is counting the free accounts. Surprised at VI being up there, I thought I remembered reading that it sold poorly and that the devs are shocked at how big the fan base is on despite the sales.

Best FF since the PS1 continues to sell great.

Is it the second best selling FF ever yet? FFX was second wasn't it?

It released at the tail end of the PS1 so it shouldn't be a surprise. I think the PS2 was either out or just about to release.

Came out a few months before PS2's release (or a few months after JP PS2's release).

Also, FFXII released on the tail-end of PS2 and near the PS3's release year, thought it managed to overtake FFIX.

XIV is counting the free accounts. Surprised at VI being up there, I thought I remembered reading that it sold poorly and that the devs are shocked at how big the fan base is on despite the sales.

Probably because FFVI has a lot of re-releases, including this gen via mobile and PC.

Midgar, With Love
Why are some people in here saying it's only behind 7 and 8 and someone else posted a chart that puts it in 6th place? Conflicting information sources?

I seriously question these numbers. I'm sorry but VI didn't sell anywhere close to 10 million.

Makes sense, I guess, because of its marketing and visibility. For a while you couldn't throw a rock without hitting something FFXV-related in pretty much every form of popular media.

Man, I've been waiting for them to stop releasing DLC and updates but it doesn't seem to stop. Will just have to give in and pick it up soon.

I'm kinda curious though, if we compare the FFVII series combining FFVII, DoC, and CC:FFVII vs. the FFX series combining FFX and FFX-2, will the FFX series come out as the best selling FF or is it still the FFVII series?

FF10 only got one re-release, so FF7 is the best-selling overall by sheer number of re-releases and compilation products.

There is no way these numbers aren't just guesswork. Short of assaulting Square HQ, there's no way of obtaining the numbers VI has made in all its rereleases because they haven't said.

I don't know fully myself but it seems they only report on what they know so it doesn't include *all sales*

Square did report on it back in 2003 (lumping SNES sales with the Playstation rerelease) http://www.jp.square-enix.com/ir/e/explanatory/download/0404-200402090000-01.pdf#page=27
Famitsu.com apparently released sales figures for the GBA rerelease in Japan http://web.archive.org/web/20081230005318/www.japan-gamecharts.com/gba.php

Congratulations but I really cannot understand why. When I played it, the game was still sort of unfinished.
