I wondered if they did some kind of update. I am in Chapter 7 on NG+ play through, BE, and Sylvain's brother came out to meet me halfway through the battle. NEVER seen any of them move out from their starting spots before. It made it a LOT harder to get the accuracy ring because I had to split my army in two, and make sure that nobody took the boss out before I could defeat the guy in the corner with the ring. I'm interested to see if the Death Knight is going to chase me as well in the next chapter ...
Miklan also moves in Hard but I don't know that triggers it

I do find it amusing that the first two chapters in madding scaled up, but then the mandatory practice battle is set at level 3 for the enemies. I know it the church just teaching you the ropes, but I barely gain any XP from that fight.

Yes! So happy that the new difficulty is out. I started my second play through (Blue Lions) on maddening this morning. I'm a bit confused about new game+ though. Does it not apply if you choose a new difficulty? I noticed that my teacher level is back to E.

You have to go to your desk in your room and use renown to buy the levels.

The journal on your desk allows you to increase your level manually, along with any supports you did before, weapon ranks, etc.

Can I change to Maddening midplaythrough? I stopped my NG+ Blue Lions run at 8 ch. a few weeks ago cuz it was way too easy, never actually considered if It would be locked to only new playthroughs. Just remembered hearing that if you start normal you couldn't switch to hard, so now I'm worried.

Ahh, nice. Thank you! I didn't even know that your desk was a thing. Hmm, now I'll have to decide if i even want to this, it maybe feels like cheating, given that I've come to the new difficulty looking for a challenge.

If you really want the challenge, you should start a NG run (not NG+), since apparently there's some change to the title screen if you clear Maddening on NG.

You can't go from Hard to Maddening. I was at the same spot in my BL run and I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and start over.

What are the changes to the title screen? I'm inclined to start NG+ on Maddening because renown lets me have more freedom on customization and shit, but I know it would make it easier in the process which kinda defeats the purpose of a harder difficulty setting.

No idea what changes, it's just mentioned in the patch notes.

I'm very curious if Maddening is mostly balanced towards NG+ or not. (And if that fourth difficulty in the game files will ever be finished and released.)

Maddening? It's time for IS to find a naming pattern again for all their FE games.

Are those new outfits some sort of sport/physical edu outfits? They sure look like students ready for some Dodge Ball.

Pretty sure all five of those new auxiliary battles are based on preexisting locations. Kind of lame.

Otherwise sounds golden! I really, really, really hate that I can't afford to purchase this DLC for two more weeks. I'm gonna be done with my second route and setting the game aside for a while by then for sure. ;_;
Yeah, I believe they're based on the paralogue maps. Definitely disappointed me.

The new auxiliary battles have new battle maps? If so, this is the biggest new addition in the paid DLC.

Sadly, no, not new.

I'm bummed that I can't afford the expansion pass for a couple more weeks but the sting is certainly lessened by that fact. I <3 the Lake Teutates map, for example, but I was definitely hoping for something truly... new.

Shit I should have waited with my second play through. Doing Edelgard run and it is a slog due to how easy hard is. Glad that maddening difficulty is not costing anything.

Is the DLC still mainly Koei's work then? I do wonder what IS is up to with the other 100+ employees.

Got confused because I thought I'd missed wave 1 dlc, but they're counting the day 1 byleth outfit as wave 1 so 🤷‍♀️

Do love stealth drops though, and kinda weird they renamed it to Maddening

Probably less dramatic to say the difficulty is maddening than calling you a lunatic for trying it.
There are always ways to read such things in a negative way. "Maddening" as in "it'll make you mad" can also easily be read as referring to madness as a mental disorder.

I don't really care what's it's called, but keeping a consistent naming convention helps players know what they're getting into.

Also we'll need to have more reports of later game Maddening difficulty, but I wish Normal was called Easy, Hard was called Normal, and we would have had a proper "Hard" difficulty between "Normal" and "Utter Suffering".

I'm happy for those who like those brutally hard modes, but Hard isn't even remotely Hard, so you basically have the choice between "Normal" difficulty and "Super Hard" difficulty, with nothing in-between.

Early game Maddening is very challenging. I completed chapter 2 last night and the lack of experience has you putting your level 1-2 characters (Byleth and Claude might be higher by a level or two) against level 9 characters that actually have good abilities. Thieves have pass, archers have +1 range (meaning they can counter curved shot which is really bad) and poison touch. Being higher leveled means that they will almost always double your characters and many can just 1 shot mages/archers and everyone else just barely survives. Oh the boss also moves now when you get within range. My strongest character was Byleth at level 5 at the very end of this map (going very, very slowly) and the boss doubled him and brought him down to 1 HP, he would've easily killed anyone else and I had to use Byleth to draw him out.

Also had to use all 3 Divine Pulses at this point. I think you normally start with 4 on hard and jesus do they feel needed here.

The level disparity also means you are doing really low damage so you need to use special attacks which means you also end up running out of durability a lot faster. I had 3 or 4 broken weapons at the end of the battle.
