Lightning for Smash

Engadget posted a preview for Fire Emblem but it was quickly taken down, I manged to take pictures of the article. It is EXTREMELY positive, and that just makes the wait even harder.

And here is a larger version saved by Enduin

Major characters do some wild things, and you should go in expecting to make decisions that completely change how you experience the story.

The game warns you when choices majorly impact the plot, which means I know that I've ony experienced one side to the story. And that's just the tale of one house.

The first house storyline took me around 45 hours to finish, and I imagine the next two will be closer to 60.

Cutscenes seem to be encoded at 24 frames per second, i.e. a different frame rate to the rest of the game. This leads to a lot of judder in the otherwise excellent clips.

There's a handful of camera zoom levels to pick from, but even the most distante wasn't zoomed out enough for me once the maps ballooned in size.

NG+ is confirmed

There's a lot more and it is worth a read.

This is going to be a long 2 weeks, isn't it.
Glad about NG+, will make playing through the other houses faster.

Couldn't be more excited. The preview reassured any doubts, and provided very helpful clarification.

Post-skip being 3/4 the game is... so enticing.

This isn't a proper FETH thread until we get the BL v GD v RE poll. Fail.

But seriously I'm very looking forward to this.

I like how fluid the battles look... It doesnt look like they are just taking turns. It looks like "actual combat". Pretty cool. I will also say this is the coolest fight choreography since the 2d FE games. They nailed it for the first time since then. The other ones Fates/awakening just looked so off and weak. Like little gremlins running across the screen to slash each other.

Will buy a switch for this someday.

Some weird bits in that preview, (I'm not quite sure how the setup is similar to fates? The way they describe the life/work balance being better than persona despite sounding exactly the same as persona, some mentions of taking a few things from Valentia that don't seem to be taken from valentia) But this is like, hyper-nerd series fan nitpicking on my part.

I think the thing I'm most interested in is that the game has descriptions of how each Month is important to the Church Calendar, complete with some celtic-like illustrations. That might be a yawn to most people, but I need me the lore.

The Persona bit made sense in that the day isn't divided into discreet parts meaning unlike Persona you can do a number of things in one day, especially once you've increased your Teacher rank. So you have more freedom to choose and manage your time, unlike Persona where events are limited to certain days, times of day, etc and once you choose to do an activity that's it the day progresses and you may or may not be able to do something else. So you basically have more freedom and opportunity to make the most of your free time which makes it feel more rewarding.

It's pretty similar on a surface level, in that you choose from diverging routes early on.

I guess that's fair!

Also fair. I guess I read it as "the connection between what you do in social activities leads to improvements in battle, which is something persona couldn't get quite right."

I figured this was just me being more nitpicky and weird.

I am so hyped for this. I haven't played a FE game since Awakening and I am ready to see it on my Switch/TV.

It all sounds so nice! Unsure if I'll have time to finish more than one route before Astral Chain comes out, but I'll be definitely finishing them all eventually.

I may be reading this wrong but wasn't this related to an artistic choice of the animation studio?

I'll always maintain that obsessing about review scores and "stray opinions" is kind of unhealthy. But that's my opinion.

Anyway, the one thing that did stick out to me was the writer mentioning that the game felt pretty easy. I wonder if that's a reflection of just being able to make your units OP or if the map design was lacking. They didn't really go into that, so I'm interested in getting more previews about it.

That is such a positive write-up! It seems like the reviewer enjoyed everything about the game with some minor issues like normal mode being too easy, blurry visuals at times, and wonky writing towards the end. I am predicting that this game will be great and have a critic score in the high 80s

Anyone else impressed about how general opinion about the game got better with more information released?

Now, i know, especially for Nintendo games, never judge until close to release. But i do think that Nintendo should work on having a better "first impression" when the announce a game.

The first trailer impressions were pretty strong, it was the second showing where they focused on the school stuff that had people down.

Yeah. I think it's just because all we had to go on was the art style and the fact that it was a school setting. I don't think the art style was really knocking anyone's socks off and the school setting was divisive. But once we learned more about the fact that the game has a larger-than-anticipated scope and about how the actual school system works, people have turned around on it.

The thing is, it has left great first impression to me during its reveal. I am just getting more excited over time. People are just too quick to judge and write it off when it is revealed to have a school setting.

I agree, first example I can think of is Luigi's Mansion 3. Its first appearance was... nothing special. However this E3...it was like a brand new game or something like that in my mind and I'm hype for it. Same thing happened for this Fire Emblem to me.

It's a good preview, but it doesn't say anything of the main thing I'm worried about: map design and variety during the battles themselves.

Normal/Classic for me. Thanks to the turnwheel i can undo mindfarts of mine, so no need to go full "casual". ^^

And i'm out of the time to play games on hard. Plus i love to grind in these games ...

This is going to be my first Fire Emblem game and it's all because of the school reminding me of Persona. Intelligent Systems did a great getting people like me in.

At least they aced it with the BOTW sequel announcement. Though it wouldn't surprise me if the next time they show it the footage underwhelms and Fanbase Worry Ensues. lol
