Playing through the Golden Deer route now, and I'm confused why Claude doesn't get more flak for
attacking Enbarr while it's full of civilians? I get that the game is painting Edelgard as the villain by saying she won't let civilians evacuate, and I understand the narrative is likely unwilling to commit to a siege scenario, but just in terms of logistics there's no reason why Claude needs to assault Enbarr immediately.

He has a direct line open to the capital now that Fort Merceus has been obliterated, and with the battle at Gronder Field he's seized the main bread basket for the entire Empire. He could probably come out on top in an extended siege, but he chooses to commit a war crime instead because it's expedient. He even advises Byleth to direct artillery fire on targets within the city, undoubtedly causing a ton of collateral damage.

It's an effective move, and propels the story forward, but it's a pretty ruthless decision to see coming from someone who claims the moral high ground.

Thanks. :3 Yeah, the auxiliary battles are just such a crapshoot for me. I seldom manage to break every monster's shields for things like mythril and umbral steel in particular. RIP my beautiful Levin Swords.

I need this photoshopped with Claude, Byleth, Dimitri, Edelgard and Seteth.
Wait is Petra intended to be this game's version of someone from Africa? Her post-time skip clothes seem similar to some of the more tribal outfits.

I hope not, it opens a whole can of worms.
I don't think it's mean to be "she's from anime Africa" but a lot of her supports border on problematic for me given how heavily she's coded under the "noble tribesperson" trope. If people find her to be a well written example of someone learning to speak a new language then go right ahead but her supports with Claude and a few other characters made me a bit uncomfortable with how they characterize her beyond her learning a new language.

That and the whole relationship Brigid and the empire share, along with her importance in said relationship, ventures even more deep into "yikes" territory.

Just wanna share my latest offering to fire emblem, I hope this is the right place....

Neither her first nor last name (Macneary) suggest that. I took her as being from a vaugely ancient British Isles-like land.

That part of the story didn't sit well with me either. Edelgard to going full villain like that seemed pushing it to begin with (and it wasn't even a smart move), let alone having Claude just plough right in.

Thanks for the battalion info! As it happens, I have stuff to say about your BE-C thoughts too; it was my first route (I'm on BL now).

I'm of two minds regarding the game continuing on past Edelgard.

For starters, I would have felt like part 2 was too short if things had ended with Chapter 19. Silver Snow starts with Chapter 13, meaning part 2 would have been just barely over half the length of part 1. For a game with a big draw of "Now, five years later, things get real," I wouldn't have been thrilled with ending up classifying part 2 as a final third instead. (Not coincidentally, as much as I loved the emotional experience of going up against the woman I'd planned on having Byleth romance [she showed up at the Goddess Tower during the ball, even!], I'm looking forward to Crimson Flower the least because it really is that short. It's 18 chapters.)

Furthermore, I was glad that plot threads regarding Those That Slither in the Dark and Rhea's mysteries were, uh... well, there was an attempt to explain them. <_< Had the game ended in Enbarr, I would have been bummed that neither of those elements were explored.

So in a sense I'm delighted that we got Chapters 20 and 21. I certainly don't feel like the game overstayed its welcome like I've seen opined twice before you even said so! I would have gladly gone another several chapters.

And that's where my issue lies: like you, I was left confounded by endgame developments. I had hardly an inkling what it was that I was thwarting when I went up against the Agarthans; Thales just kind of died and I was like... "Oh." Compounding matters, the script seems to assume players understand from past Fire Emblems that inevitably someone is a dragon and they go crazy; I did not know this until I was told by members here on Era, so I was left flabbergasted in the moment.

Overall I love Silver Snow. I just wish I knew what the hell was going on during the climax...
I totally get your point. I know it may seem contradictory but I feel the reason I thought the last two missions felt long was because it felt very sudden. There wasn't a proper build up and things just... happens? Edelgard boss fight was a long long build up and felt very satisfying as a "final battle". But then suddenly you get a letter from Hubert about "the real bad guys!!!". So you go ahead and beat them and the map was cool so that's fine I guess. I still don't really know who these people are and why we just went there and wiped them out. Then suddenly Rhea transforms into an out of control dragon and I'm like, ok this came out of nowhere as well. The lack of build up made those two battles feel tacked on as almost an afterthought, hence why they dragged for me. I would not have minded if they spend a bit more time giving proper back stories that lead to those final fights. So, lengthen the game so those last two fights don't seem like an afterthought would help. It definitely didn't help that the second part of the monastery exploration feels much emptier because of less people, quests and stuff to do as well.

Maybe I should have gotten the hint that I might have to take down Rhea because I did see weapons that target dragons and I saw no dragons before 🤔

LOL. It was right there in front of us!

Yeah, I definitely agree with you. They're abrupt at best. One thing I keep hearing is that Golden Deer is the route that offers the most information about the Agarthans. I'd have hopped straight in there after Silver Snow if it weren't for the fact that I also keep hearing that GD is most similar to BE-C in general. So I'm going to hold off on that until after Lunatic Mode and all the other DLC is out. And then, maybe, someday when I replay BE-C I'll feel more satisfied with the finale battles, if only because a "past life" told me what's what.

On the topic of the monastery in part 2 being lackluster, totally agree. Some events sprinkled in would have helped. Some new activities would have helped even more so. What's funny is, thanks to New Game+ I was able to recruit absolutely everybody who is remotely recruitable on my current file, so the Azure Moon (BL) monastery is so packed with people that there are, like, inadvertent clumps of former students standing beside one-another and having completely different things to say. I noticed in BE-C that the monastery seems to have substantially more NPCs to chat with (soldiers, monks, etc) in part 2, no doubt in a half-realized effort to ensure it isn't a ghost town for first-timers who likely were not able to recruit too many people in part 1. So now they're clumped together too.

It doesn't make part 2's monastery any more fulfilling in terms of actual things to do, of course, but it still helps overall. I have so many perspectives on Blue Lions wartime fare every month!

That said, when I play GD I think I'm actually gonna only recruit seven or so students. I'd kind of like the other houses not to be comprised of endless nobodies, haha. My Battle of the Eagle and Lion this run was hilarious...

I accidentally saved over my black eagle play prior to the end of part 1. So that means if I want to do BE-E, I have restart... which I am tempted to do now because I want the other perspective lol! That, or blue lions is my next playthrough preference. Do you have any opinion on which one I should do for NG+? I hope for some extra variety which, as you said, GD might not be able to offer as much.

ok full patch notes is up for v1.0.2

New and Updated Features
  • Added Maddening mode to the New Game difficulty options. Note that if you clear Maddening mode without selecting New Game +, the title screen will change.
  • Increased the bonus Renown for selecting New Game + at the start of the game.
    • In addition to the usual difficulty bonus, 10,000 Pts. will now be added each time you clear a path.
    • The max threshold for bonus Renown is now 50,000 Pts.
    • If you already started playing using New Game + before applying the DLC data, 10,000 Pts. per cleared path will be added to each save slot the first time it is loaded.
    • Up to Ver.1.0.1, only the type of path cleared was saved but not the number of clears for the same path, which will now be saved applying the DLC Ver.1.0.2.
  • Added Goddess Tower to the Event Gallery in Extras. Use the ZL/ZR Buttons to select the Goddess Tower page, then choose a character event to replay.
    • The Event Gallery is unlocked once you've cleared the game.
  • Implemented new English voice for Byleth (male).
  • New Expansion Pass Content:
    • A new set of items
      • You can receive this set of items as DLC Supplies from the bed in Byleth's Personal Quarters. Each save file can receive these supplies: Sacred Galewind Shoes (Movement +1), Sacred Floral Robe (HP +7), Sacred Snowmelt Drop (Strength +3), Sacred Moonstone (Speed +3).
    • Additional auxiliary battles
      • There are five additional auxiliary battles in the Expansion Pass: Battle at Lake Teutates, Battle in the Forest, Battle at Gronder Field, Battle at the Sealed Forest, and Battle at Conand Tower.
      • Depending on your progress, one of them will be listed in the battle-selection screen.
      • These additional auxiliary battles will be marked with the yellow "!" icon in the battle-selection screen. As a bonus, these battles may give you status-up items, such as Ailell Pomegranate, and an increased Gold reward in addition to the Bullions.
      • All maps will consume one activity point to start.
    • A new song (Corridor of the Tempest)
      • You can access the new song (Corridor of the Tempest) from the System menu while you are in an auxiliary battle. You can also listen to it in the Music Library.
    • New attire/accessory (House Loungewear / Glasses for Byleth)
      • The new attire (House Loungewear) is for the protagonist and students. Swap outfits in Byleth's Personal Quarters from the Journal. These outfits are only wearable inside the monastery, or for specific unit classes during battle (this varies by character).
      • The new attire cannot be sent along with a traveler.
      • The new accessory (Glasses) can also be put on in Byleth's Personal Quarters. They can be combined with any other attire. The glasses can be worn in the monastery and during battle.
    • A confirmation message is now displayed when you abandon an item during battle.

General
  • Fixed the bug that caused the game to freeze when Fortify was used while equipped with a certain skill.
  • Addressed the incorrect character design in event still images.
  • Fixed the bug that incorrectly displayed a Caspar line as Linhardt's during the White Heron Cup.
  • Fixed the bug that displayed a "TBD" message when mastering combat.
  • Fixed the bug in the cut-in sequence for a CRITICAL attack.
  • Fixed the bug that prevented Rescue magic from working properly to move an ally to a space near the user.
  • Fixed the bug that accidentally let the player enter the closed-off desk corridor in the Cardinals' Room.
  • Some text has been revised.
  • The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few additional bugs.

So do you need to keep all of your characters at B rank support and only view the A ranks of characters that you want to pair up? Or is there a way to view all of the A ranks while still controlling the pairings?

Sadly, I can't really offer any firsthand thoughts on BE-E, as I have yet to play through it myself! Less helpful, I know, but... I can at least tell you that at least as of Chapter 17, BL is awesome. :P

Can you get A-rank on a student not in your class without using Renown before act 2? Am I wasting my time trying to recruit these people?

I am just going to wait until all dlc updates are released. Then I will do a new game lunatic play with the additional stories if the extra stories end up being good.

Can they randomly join at B-rank or is that not even possible?
they can. but why you didn't just go ask the characters to join you? required stats still too low?

by that time there should be a 4th difficulty

I'm on my second route and I'm just looking to pick up characters that have interesting paralogue items. I spent all my renown on statues + professor level.
You should be able to recruit from B support very easily. The vast majority of characters only require D proficiency in their required skill and single digit stats with B support. Get them a bit further to B+ and the requirement lowers even further to E+. You can see whether a C or B support is C+ or B+ when selecting a character in the dining hall or for choir.

A handful of characters have their B supports locked until the timeskip though, unless you are able to buy them with renown.

The mock battle on maddening is fucking ridiculous

Yeah, seriously WTF is this? Harder than most of Conquest Lunatic. Like, nobody on my team can take a hit. You don't have enough spells to last the fight, and everbody gets killed in a Counter Double by Dmitri. I have absolutely no idea what to do.

Imma need a list of changes for maddening difficulty, i need to see the fuckery.

Does it matter? 95+% of players aren't going to make it past the mock battle.

Petra is getting doubled by anyone that's not an armor class. Unless the stat advantage goes down later (unlikely) speed is kind of irrelevant now.

Maybe maddening will be Dedue Emblem.
