Unless the generally low resistance of enemy units has been changed in "Maddening"/they just hit that hard, I don't see how Lysithea doesn't help carry players through the early chapters (assuming this is for a NG+ playthrough for recruitment purposes on all but the Blue Lions path given Dedue's praise; BL is the only path i've yet to touch).

Damn i had to sacrifice Lys and Marianne in the first maddening fght.
Weird because in an earlier try Dedue could not double her. Maybe she happened to get 1 spd to prevent the double which allowed her to survive one extra turn. In any case ch 1 done.

Also I think it would be even harder if i tried to engage both houses. I just took the left path and poked at dorothea to bait her and edel, then used the healing pad to engage the blue lions. And finally just baited hanneman with claude

I'm so tempted of doing a Maddening run with no NG+ but I'm also more interested in being able to do all the support conversations during my BL run.

Aaah :(

What if we get a story expansion dlc about the 5 years war? I'd be soooooo down for that!

Sadly, I can't really offer any firsthand thoughts on BE-E, as I have yet to play through it myself! Less helpful, I know, but... I can at least tell you that at least as of Chapter 17, BL is awesome. :P
Did you manage to save Dedue who tried to bum rush the throne? Dedue was doing fine in my game until like 3 mages went up to him and killed him in one turn.

Disappointed to read that maddening is that difficult. We all love a challenge, but there is a fine line between something being challenging and something becoming downright tedious.
I hope this is just a case of early game hell, but damn...

I expect Maddening will get more reasonable a ways in; part of what broke Normal/Hard was the amount of flexibility in character builds+opportunities to train+battalions/equipment/etc, and the first few chapters all of that is very limited. By midgame you have a squad that's much more capable all around.

Proper balancing shall account to that. I'm pretty sure Maddening is name-deserving. It's the difficulty for those who won't shut-up about how easy the Hard mode is 🤷‍♀️

On a side note, I love how they casually added a bunch of new ??? in the Event viewer that will require 20+ playthroughs to fill 💁‍♀️

Okay, so I wanna just make sure of something:

There's no hidden secret fourth route after you beat all three, right? Because I feel like there is in 90% of video games with this structure.

Dang, it sounds like they jumped over the difficulty sweetspot of Conquest Hard and went straight for Conquest Lunatic levels of suffering.

As long as Maddening isn't bogged down by a bunch of same-turn reinforcements though, I'll probably still have a great time with it. I'm definitely excited to see battlefield decisions carry more weight.

Playing through the Golden Deer route now, and I'm confused why Claude doesn't get more flak for
attacking Enbarr while it's full of civilians? I get that the game is painting Edelgard as the villain by saying she won't let civilians evacuate, and I understand the narrative is likely unwilling to commit to a siege scenario, but just in terms of logistics there's no reason why Claude needs to assault Enbarr immediately.

He has a direct line open to the capital now that Fort Merceus has been obliterated, and with the battle at Gronder Field he's seized the main bread basket for the entire Empire. He could probably come out on top in an extended siege, but he chooses to commit a war crime instead because it's expedient. He even advises Byleth to direct artillery fire on targets within the city, undoubtedly causing a ton of collateral damage.

It's an effective move, and propels the story forward, but it's a pretty ruthless decision to see coming from someone who claims the moral high ground.

The last few chapters of each of the routes are where the train falls off the tracks and where you have to make some leaps of judgement.

The impression I get is that the invasion of Enbarr is basically Claude partaking in the idea that the war is over the minute they take over the capital and head of state. Edelgard is going to fight to the death so a prolonged war isn't going to really work without a lot of people suffering. She's not going to throw down her weapons because people are starving.

You answered your own question really, the game often presents Edelgard as so ruthless, unreasonable and desperate to win that she's more than willing to commit pain and suffering to her own people if it will give her an edge. By contrast, it makes the lord that you've chosen to support as being forced to take drastic measures...essentially it's a "you've done this evil thing so therefore we're in the clear to do XYZ".

I don't really like this type of storytelling because it's basically punching down and basically concluding "well, look at what you made us do it's your fault that we had to kill your civilians because you refused to let them leave". A conversation between Dimitri and Edelgard is another route has similar issues where they punch down Edelgard by having her respond like a complete idiot (while in the process have Dimitri sound like a dude with zero nuanced political thought)

The biggest success of the game is the character progression via things like support system (vs. say Fates or Awakening where characters are stagnant) and characters continuing to interact with the plot well after their recruitment. The actual political and ethical aspect of the game is pretty naive, simplistic and not particularly well fleshed out.

ok full patch notes is up for v1.0.2

New and Updated Features
  • Added Maddening mode to the New Game difficulty options. Note that if you clear Maddening mode without selecting New Game +, the title screen will change.
  • Increased the bonus Renown for selecting New Game + at the start of the game.
    • In addition to the usual difficulty bonus, 10,000 Pts. will now be added each time you clear a path.
    • The max threshold for bonus Renown is now 50,000 Pts.
    • If you already started playing using New Game + before applying the DLC data, 10,000 Pts. per cleared path will be added to each save slot the first time it is loaded.
    • Up to Ver.1.0.1, only the type of path cleared was saved but not the number of clears for the same path, which will now be saved applying the DLC Ver.1.0.2.
  • Added Goddess Tower to the Event Gallery in Extras. Use the ZL/ZR Buttons to select the Goddess Tower page, then choose a character event to replay.
    • The Event Gallery is unlocked once you've cleared the game.
  • Implemented new English voice for Byleth (male).
  • New Expansion Pass Content:
    • A new set of items
      • You can receive this set of items as DLC Supplies from the bed in Byleth's Personal Quarters. Each save file can receive these supplies: Sacred Galewind Shoes (Movement +1), Sacred Floral Robe (HP +7), Sacred Snowmelt Drop (Strength +3), Sacred Moonstone (Speed +3).
    • Additional auxiliary battles
      • There are five additional auxiliary battles in the Expansion Pass: Battle at Lake Teutates, Battle in the Forest, Battle at Gronder Field, Battle at the Sealed Forest, and Battle at Conand Tower.
      • Depending on your progress, one of them will be listed in the battle-selection screen.
      • These additional auxiliary battles will be marked with the yellow "!" icon in the battle-selection screen. As a bonus, these battles may give you status-up items, such as Ailell Pomegranate, and an increased Gold reward in addition to the Bullions.
      • All maps will consume one activity point to start.
    • A new song (Corridor of the Tempest)
      • You can access the new song (Corridor of the Tempest) from the System menu while you are in an auxiliary battle. You can also listen to it in the Music Library.
    • New attire/accessory (House Loungewear / Glasses for Byleth)
      • The new attire (House Loungewear) is for the protagonist and students. Swap outfits in Byleth's Personal Quarters from the Journal. These outfits are only wearable inside the monastery, or for specific unit classes during battle (this varies by character).
      • The new attire cannot be sent along with a traveler.
      • The new accessory (Glasses) can also be put on in Byleth's Personal Quarters. They can be combined with any other attire. The glasses can be worn in the monastery and during battle.
    • A confirmation message is now displayed when you abandon an item during battle.

General
  • Fixed the bug that caused the game to freeze when Fortify was used while equipped with a certain skill.
  • Addressed the incorrect character design in event still images.
  • Fixed the bug that incorrectly displayed a Caspar line as Linhardt's during the White Heron Cup.
  • Fixed the bug that displayed a "TBD" message when mastering combat.
  • Fixed the bug in the cut-in sequence for a CRITICAL attack.
  • Fixed the bug that prevented Rescue magic from working properly to move an ally to a space near the user.
  • Fixed the bug that accidentally let the player enter the closed-off desk corridor in the Cardinals' Room.
  • Some text has been revised.
  • The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few additional bugs.
Very curious to see what has been revised.

Whoah wait. Where does Id (Purpose) and Conquest (Ablaze) play in the game?

pls buy the amiibo and line Nintendo's pockets.

So.. quick riposte is a must huh?
(For some reason quick riposte sets your AS to the max instead of grating you an extra attack like in feh)

I'm adoring the game yet still fairly early 16 hours in with the Golden Deer and on the 8th month. I'm already thinking about doing a second run with another house after I'm done with the Golden Deer. I'm Boyleth (male Byleth) right now but the second run will star Bylass. I do have one question about Bylass, or female Byleth's design and this is a really stupid observational question. Why does she have her belly button exposed? She has a cool design for the most part but her belly button being shown while walking in public looks dumb and unprofessional for a newly anointed professor. Is she trying to mimic 1993 Box art Doom Guy's design where he has his abs and belly exposed for no good reason?

Have you seen Manuela's outfit? i don't think anyone in the monastery cares about Byleth showing her belly button lol, also if you have the DLC you can give her a proper uniform and glasses so she looks more like a professor.

So, I think Maddening might be really... bad? There's no new restrictions in place for grinding, and the grinding levels are unchanged from Hard (I think), so a bunch of the game time is spent doing dumb grinding against really easy enemies so you can sort of keep up with the giant statblock enemies.

Look at those Gremory and FKnight stats, holy shit.
gtfoh maddening stats only my F!Byleth from my GD run can handle these ****s as I had every stat but def & res 50 or above (str hitting 60s+). looks like maddening gonna force me to soft reset every chapter just to get 5-6+ lvlup farming on byleth ****.

Mind blown that The Sword of the Creator is made from Sothis bones and heart, as well that all the Hero's Relics are made from her children.

Really horrific stuff, though I don't understand why Rhea kept the crest society and elite worship in place.

I kinda like that you have to play through all routes to get the bigger picture, though it's a bit disappointing how similar the Golden Deer and Silver Snow route are.

It's really ironic that the descendants from the 10 elites are the ones protecting the church and Rhea, while the descendants of those gifted by the four saints and Seiros tries to overthrow it.

Remind me again why...

Gronder Field isn't in Edelgard's route. It would've made a great first chapter to reintroduce the other lords and set up the takedown of the Alliance. Especially given how both Claude and Dimitri are only in one chapter each. Just played through it on Verdant Wind and it was brutal. It would've been awesome to play the reunion from Edelgard's perspective.

Enemy levels are higher, exp gain is significantly cut and enemies have new skills

It's too early to say if it's great or not, but it's a big improvement from baseh ard mode

But the aux missions and sidequests missions aren't changed, so most of the battles that people spend their time playing are functionally the same, except in the different meta.

I feel like 95% of players or more are going to have a much more enjoyable time on Hard. This is a super niche difficulty level.

You can do aux missions and sidequests without being heinously overleveled now, which I think is a big improvement

Are people on Maddening doing online or offline? Online seems like it would be a massive boost to level. At the Red Canyon and I have too many Level 1 characters that are just getting doubled relentlessly.
