No. some are in the same settings but plenty of them exist in their own worlds. I think the only real connection is gameplay.
Though there is stuff like Warriors and Heroes which are just fanservice-y cross over games.
I casually play FE games from time to time, how lost am I going to be with the 1000 characters and story?
smaller end complaint wise I mean, such as things like some reviewers disliking the visuals at specific points in the game as opposed to the entire game etc. not length
Or it could be just side-quests that could fit anywhere, like Echoes DLC characters who came in standalone maps that could be integrated into Alm's or Celica's campaigns, which were completely separate until game. That way the new characters can be added to any of the armies, doesn't matter the path the player is following.
I was just going to comment on that shitty review. It shouldn't even count after saying Fates had better writing than anything. If you look at the Daily Star's other scores, you'll notice a pretty large discrepancy between their scores and the rest of critics

Three houses, 4 storylines, all different from each other ... you have plenty of time to dig into this as you will be playing it for a long time if you want to see everything. ^^
Quick q: is the main story generally the same regardless of the house you pick or is this a game that will essentially require 3 playthroughs?

No, each house tells a different story, you play on different maps also.
Better score than Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. Only Smash Ultimate have a higher score on Switch.

These scores trigger me bit tbh. Bought every FE game so far but I rarely play them. I still have the GameCube and Wii games shrink wrapped, lol. And I am kinda sick of turn based strategy. So I didn't want to buy this one. At least not at launch for full price. But impressions are really good... B)
Both GI and IGN reviews (9.5/10) are not taken into account yet it seems.

In Short: A disappointingly clumsy attempt to evolve the Fire Emblem formula, that takes little advantage of being on the Switch, but the anime melodrama and fun combat still entertains.
Pros: Despite a weak script the storytelling is surprisingly good, with some unexpected twists. Core combat is as entertaining as ever. A
mountain of content and lots of replay value.
Cons: A horrible user interface that makes battle preparation in particular a complete chore. Bland, low tech graphics and banal dialogue. Tedious fetch quests and creepy dating element.
Score: 7/10
