I'm so glad I loved The Last Jedi.

Not liking that movie seems like an endless curse which must be such a burden to bear, considering how many people in this thread and elsewhere seem compelled to drag their baggage everywhere nearly two years later.

Super stoked for Knives Out!

Lol, does people really need "not to be glad" if they didn't like The Last Jedi and then they found themselves enjoying this movie?

Not liking a director's movie and then liking another movie from the same person is not this utterly impossible thing to do, I mean it's a pretty common thing. So silly.

Considering an extremely vocal segment of the people who disliked TLJ go out of their way to tell everyone all the damn time how much Rian raped their childhoods, the remark isn't unwarranted

People still tweet abuse at Rian every damn day since TLJ came out.

Rian Johnson is such a fascinating filmmaker in that he makes movies that are really well received, but no one you speak to about them seems to like them.

You should speak to more people. Looper was almost universally liked or loved by friends and family that saw it and the movie did really well critically and commercially.

And TLJ, well. Plenty of people loved it.

Anything that gets more people interested in whodunits and Agatha Christie / Poirot / Marple.

I'd just like to point out though that most Christie stories/adaptations are actually substantially comedic in places. The detectives are eccentric and loveable. This appears to carry that same spirit.

OH shit. Johnson directed Fly? I hated that episode with a passion.

This guy is really hit or miss!
I enjoyed Brick on the first viewing, but it doesn't hold up well on repeat viewings
Looper was good.
TLJ was bad
Knives Out seems to be good
Fly was bad, but the other two episodes he directed were good.

Maybe there is hope that these new SW films will be good. Or at least 1 out of 3 should be good going by his record.

Fly is superb, but he didn't write, only direct. And I'm not sure there's much to criticize in the direction of the episode.

Fly is absolutely not bad.

KNIVES OUT: a film about America. Review tomorrow. Sorry, one more: it was absolutely genius

With the KNIVES OUT premiere underway, think I'm finally cleared to gush that it's the best damn film I've seen all year. (Throw in last year, too.) Not just the crackerjack mystery I'd hoped for, but also deeply cathartic in ways I'd never have anticipated. Final shot is pure

Knives Out is flat-out awesome in every way. The funniest film I have seen this year - clever-as-hell writing & glorious performances (Daniel Craig steals the film), this murder-mystery send-up just killed it here at #TIFF19

KNIVES OUT: Pure entertainment. Great cast, perfect pacing, and such a smart script. People are gonna LOVE this.

Is it just me or....does Rian Johnson avoid using Black People in his projects?

Seems like its pretty important for this film to have a majority white cast as its lampooning elements of trumpism, but even so Lakeith Stanfield and Ana de Armas are some representation.

Richard Roundtree and Meagan Good in Brick. Rinko Kinkuchi in Bloom. Boyega and Isaac in TLJ, as well as his hires like Tran, Ngo and del Toro. Not lots, I suppose, but there's representation enough. Aside from TLJ and this, he's worked with a lot of smallc casts; Brick in particular was £500k with about 8 main actors and two were black.

Consciously or unconsciously, it's hard to say. It does stick out that TLJ was his most diverse cast, which was mostly inherited. He hasn't though, rather glaringly, had a PoC lead in any of his films or projects.

It does bear noting that his most significant addition to the cast was Kelly Marie Tran.
Not disputing any of what you said, however

Yeah he's a good director. He was just handed a grenade in Episode VIII I think by having to address the mystery boxes of why Luke fled the galaxy and became a hermit and there wasn't going to be a happy answer to that for the nerdier portion of the SW community.

Ahh yes he clearly can't do any better because he meets the Token black dude quota.....And what about when we look at lead actors?

Do you want the star of a movie about a rich, white, awful, right-wing family to be black? All indications (from the reviews here) are that the actual lead of this movie is Spanish-Cuban.

Rian Johnson does such a lot of good films. Seems like a bit of a genre shift for him with this one though. It's good for him to showcase his range.

He was forced to use a black lead in TLJ, and he shuttled him off to the casino planet.

He is definitely a racist, no doubt about that.

At first I thought this post was ironic but then you appeared to unironically state that Rian destroyed the Star Wars franchise.....in the same timeline where the three prequel films exist.

Ffs it was just a kid's movie and y'all twisting yourself into a knot to vilify a filmmaker who by all accounts is a genuinely great person.

That isn't even close to being true. Pretty much everyone I speak to about Looper really likes it.

Every SW fan I personally know likes TLJ.

It's harder to find fans of his earlier work because less have seen them. Whoever I show Brick to likes it though, aside from a single person who wasn't into it.

Imagine making a movie that some don't like and instead of just moving on, they have to try and destroy your character.

RJ is either a racist and misogynist or liberal SJW cuck soyboy according to some folks.
It's wild, lol. RJ might as well be the worst human to ever live, all over a space movie.

Can't tell what's worse, that time some members tried to argue months ago that TLJ is actually sexist (when it's the most overtly feminist SW film), or this instance where people are straight up accusing Rian of being a racist. (In a thread about his latest movie that literally critiques right wing culture and has a PoC as the lead.....). Like, both arguments straight up trivialize both racism and sexism to an insulting degree.
Exactly, shows where their priorities lie. No shame.

Nah...
I'm actually impressed by how some of you create these ridiculous narratives.

Meagan Goode in Brick? Lakeith? We'll skip Boyega since that is clearly the point of contention here.

Either way, you're gonna need to establish a pattern to make this one work. Right now the pattern is not on your side.

But imo, you are aiming at the wrong person, Star Wars wise.

This sounds like the sort of reviews that the director of Brick, Brothers Bloom, and Looper has earned and deserves.
