From my first impressions of the game in action, The Medium shares a remarkably similar vibe to Konami's Silent Hill series, particularly in its handling of atmospheric horror within mundane locations. The game's musical score is even co-composed by Akira Yamaoka, who was a composer for most of the music in the Silent Hill series. This is actually all intentional, as it turns out. According to the developers, the Silent Hills series was a significant source of inspiration for The Medium's creators, and according to them, the game is a tribute to the franchise.

"The Silent Hill series, particularly the second game, is our inspiration. Not just for The Medium, but for our company and how we create horror games. With The Medium, we see it as a love letter to the series and to Silent Hill 2," said producer Jacek Zieba.

While the devs aren't shy about sharing their influences, The Medium goes beyond just being a homage.

What I found interesting about The Medium is that it focuses more on emotional storytelling rather than the simple scares and grotesque imagery. In many ways, the developers see The Medium as a culmination of the talents fostered over the years. What's particularly fascinating is that this game has been in the works for some time, and it had a significant change in perspective in the past.

The Medium reminds me of Alan Wake, if Wake leaned a bit harder into its horror side. Bloober Team's upcoming Xbox Series X and S exclusive – that's right, it's not coming to Xbox One when it gets released on January 28, which I'll explain shortly – thoroughly impressed me in a 20-minute demo that skipped around to a few different areas. It's moody, it's cinematic, and like any good horror game, it's got a creepy little girl that sends shivers down your spine. And it's literally two games running at the same time.

If the rest of the game is anything like my demo, The Medium will be oozing with tension and atmosphere, and hopefully a bit more challenging puzzle-solving. To that end, the developers say you'll spend about a third of the campaign each in the real world, the spirit world, and the split-screen dual-world scenario.

Preview - The Medium Is More Than A Silent Hill Homage

Despite months of comparisons, The Medium is a much different game from Konami's hit horror franchise.

Despite months of comparisons, The Medium is a much different game from Konami's hit horror franchise.

But after an extended preview last week, I feel safe in saying that any coincidences between the two are superficial. The Medium is a much different kind of survival horror title, and one that's decidedly more modern than some may have expected. This isn't a revival of classic horror gaming - it's the next generation borrowing something from their predecessors, then infusing it with a bit of new-school pizazz.

If you're in the market for a Silent Hill re-do, you might be tempted to pass on this one, but you really shouldn't. The Medium is shaping up to be a real knockout - the kind of fresh and innovative horror release we don't get much of anymore. It's pretty clear why Microsoft is putting a lot of trust in this release, from what I've seen, and I'm excited to see how it pays off for them.

The Medium Game Fulfills Large Expectations

In a preview of Bloober Team's The Medium, Game Rant got to see an in-depth look at the game's scenery, psychic protagonist, and horrors yet unseen.

Game Rant got to see some of The Medium in action, and it's not too soon to say that players definitely have something to be excited about.

It's easy to see how The Medium draws inspiration from past cult-classic horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, especially because its soundtrack was created with Akira Yamaoka, a composer who is most known for his work on Silent Hill. The fixed camera angles that players must navigate are also very reminiscent of early Resident Evil games, but past horror influences aren't the only thing players have to look forward to, though.

Will they roll out Directstorage on PC before the game? Wondering if it will be needed for PCs to have equivalent load times with the XSX.

Silent Hill and Alan Wake? That's quite the comparison. The new footage looked great.

Y'all go ahead and enjoy this one. I'll sit this one out :)

Man, the real world looks so much more atmospheric and moody than the spirit world. That said, I really wasn't feeling it all. The video doesn't also do a great job of showcasing how this game's gimmick adds to the experience.

Kind of funny, in that interview thread yesterday you had someone saying we haven't seen much of the game, so perfect timing lol.

Not a huge fan of the lack of any combat and from what we know it seems to be more of a hide and seekers, which is played out, but I honestly think the game has a lot of potential to be a solid title. Feels like we really haven't gotten a game in this vibe in a long time, at least nothing that hit the mainstream enough for me to recall, anyway.

Pretty sure the PC recommended specs for the game are bottom of the barrel. All that talk about the SSD in the new consoles being required for the Medium's gameplay is just bunk

Wow, great first impressions.

I was thinking this would be a 6.5/10 type game but I'm feeling more optimistic now!

Either way, can't wait to try it out.

Got my attention with the Alan Wake comparison. And it's on Game Pass, so I'm definitely there day 1.

You might be right. I'm holding off on my PC upgrade to make sure there's no hardware element to directstorage that I bottleneck myself out (also parts are not available, waiting on 3080 super to be available through normal channels).

Hoping the story holds up, since it'll probably make or break the game. Either way, will give it a shot.

Gameplay and puzzles look boring, but there seems to be a great atmosphere at least. Hoping for a great story

Little Hope kind of gives off the same vibe outside of the Spirit World thing. Though it does seem like this has slightly more interactivity.

Looks good! I'll definitely give it a try on GamePass, but I don't think I'll be able to finish it. Horror games that you can't defend yourself gives me too anxiety to play.

And the camera of this game makes me wish the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remake used the same type of camera, I loved it!

Nice to see good previews but I did not like this 14 minutes gameplay, it looks really dull for me.
Hopefully there is a good story to hold up everything.

Just watched 30 sec of the video and heard creepy wispers, murder sounds, and screaming and I'm like ".. hmm.. maybe not." I played thru Silent Hill when I was, like 15 or 16, and now in my fucking 30s I can't handle it anymore.

I'm excited by the idea of fixed cameras as you can do a lot with those in a horror game to mess with the player. Unfortunately to me the gameplay just looks dull I guess? The spirit world doesn't really look all that scary and the main character talks so much / sounds slightly cheery while in the spirit world that it kills the vibe if there was going to be one. I want to see more footage, I hope it's good I need a new horror game that isn't just first person explore a house while hiding from scary thing.

You might be interested in this https://wccftech.com/the-medium-interview-bloober-team-on-exclusivity-ray-tracing-support

You've previously cited the next-gen Xbox's SSD as a critical factor to enable the Dual Reality gameplay. However, it doesn't seem like there is an SSD requirement on PC. Will loading times on PC be much slower than on Xbox Series S or X?

It goes without saying that the arrival of new consoles allows us to work with greatly improved hardware, and this is undoubtedly the case with the Xbox Series X. At Bloober we take advantage of level-streaming tech to load all titles, so the inclusion of an SSD in the new Xbox has allowed us to take things to another level.

As we've been using level-streaming in our games for a long time, we have made every effort to ensure that the experience on a PC running the recommended specs is as close as possible to that on the new Microsoft console. For PC players, SSD is recommended but not required, so yes, loading times will be increased when using an HDD. That being said there's quite a bit of difference between console and PC architecture.

To get a little more technical, PC linear transfer from a standard HDD is 100MB/s on average, while the previous generation of consoles have just a third of this value. So when you couple that with the IO cache that a PC's operating system manages, you get loading times of only a few seconds longer than the average SSD. Sure, you'll see some texture pop-in here and there, but you'll still be able to enjoy The Medium from an HDD.

Bloober loves their talking protagonists. One of the things I hate when it comes to horror games. When she said "burn you little fucks", I rolled my eyes so hard. They're nailing the atmosphere though, at least in the real world setting.

I really like the VO work of the creature towards the end of the video. Atmosphere looks like it could be on point when playing with headphones at night. It does look pretty boring, but we don't know how it evolves as it goes. Definitely excited to give this a shot!

Yea i noticed that too. There's also the part where she starts going down the stairs in the other world. Hope it gets fixed, as the video says the footage is not final.

Truly, haha. Never been one for horror outside of Dead Space I guess. Not sure I'm up for this one even though it looks good!

Is this the first original, next gen only game to be released? Not counting Demon Souls as it's a remake. (through fully acknowledging it's a super impressive title)

Happy for those who enjoy horror games, visually it looks amazing. But I can't play these type of games.

Sensei Lawrence would be dissapointed.
