I've never read the books, so I just always think of the great Blind Guardian song.

Almost 12,000 pages to read all the books, though? Damn. I can't imagine reading such a long series. Are fans excited for the show?

....I don't love it.

But it's such a small glimpse. It doesn't really tell anything, so I'm holding off actual judgment, but my snap reaction was "really??"

Kinda makes me hate these slow drips but I can't make myself stop looking at them.

As someone who used to be a fan of the books in high school, I wouldn't recommend them. They're overly long, indulgent, awkwardly paced, somewhat sexist, and have the worst filler I've seen. Basically, WoT is a prime example of the excesses of the fantasy genre.

I am currently reading through the books right now and one thing that gets said over and over again is how the Aes Sedai look "ageless" and to me it looks like they intentionally made Rosamund Pike look older which doesn't really fit in my mind.

I finished the series for the first time last year and this is the show that I am looking forward to most.

That sure is Rosamund Pike. And I can tell from her earrings that she enjoys earrings. Glad they’re staying true to the character.

I have no idea how they’d actually translate that to the screen though.
Cast someone younger or use digital makeup. I forgot about that aspect of them until the poster you responded to mentioned it. It would be a cool aspect to carry over to the show. The description of people cut from the source being neigh unrecognizable further cemented it wasn't just a small visual change.

I made it to book nine before I completely lost interest. The good parts of the books are sandwiched in between so much mind numbing waffle, especially from book five onwards. Hopefully the TV show can rectify this. Well it has to really otherwise it would be impossible to film. Not really feeling Like as Moraine based on that image. Will see how she pans out.

I don't like to comment on women's faces or bodies because *gestures at everything* but yes, she looks older here than normal. I don't know if it's the lighting, the effects, makeup, or what, but it was jarring and not what I expected.

But maybe it'll be fine? I feel like this story could DEFINITELY serve from deep cuts, removal of heavy unnecessary narration, and changes, so... I'm just gonna wait and see.

Looking ageless can't mean looking young because then they look just young. Maybe the show will have her and other Aes Sedai appear slightly older and younger in different scenes to achieve the ageless look because if their apparent age fluctuates it becomes impossible to tell who's older and younger.

That said I don't think she looks older, it just looks like she's wearing less make up than they'd usually put on her for a movie.

Sanderson really brought new life to the series, I'd highly suggest getting the cliffs notes for the last Jordan books and giving the gathering storm a shot.

Exactly my take, too.

I quit around book 5 or 6 back in the mid 2000s, in my 20s. They are the reason I didn't read ASoIAF for years, because I thought Martin would be as bloated and pointless as Jordan.

I've probably read thousands of sci-fi and fantasy books since I was first given The Hobbit in 5th grade (I think I read Dawn Treader before that). One of the very few handful of series I simply dropped because I didn't like it.

I realized after reading someone else pick on WoT online for a similar thing that I had no idea what of any significance had happened since book 1, and I was on book 5. Also, Jordan's "Rand uses Divide the River! It is super effective!" style of describing action scenes drives me crazy.

And it isn't the length itself - I'm not one to require page turners - my favorite author is Robin Hobb, after all. But Hobb/Lindholm knows how to write realistic, flawed characters, and Jordan doesn't.

That said, I'm hesitantly interested in the show - because maybe they will take the good parts of the books and drop the bad parts (shallowly written one-note characters, poorly described action scenes, and plot that feels like it is butter scraped over waaaay too much bread). And I heard Sanderson did a good job of wrapping it the series, I do like Sanderson's works just fine.

man it sure is funny how we all haha at the braid tugging and skirt shifting like the men in the series don't also have weird repetitive tics and the same thoughts over and over and over and over

I do certainly hope the series is better than the books so I can finish it out.

Hell, it's one of my favorite series and I still wouldn't recommend it lol. It's just too long and there are better series out there for your time. Plus I still have some pretty big reservations with how things ended, but that's an argument for another day.

Yeah.. I am hesitant as well it's just not how I imagined Moraine to look at all.

She's a fantastic actress. The only thing I'm concerned about it Moiraine is supposed to be really short and Rosamund tends to come across really tall in her roles LOL

EDIT: Yeah, she's 5'9" so that tracks with my impressions.

Hard to tell from the clip, but the lighting looks really cheap and oversaturated here. Might just be the effects for this particular scene since it looks like there's some magic going on in front of her, but an odd choice for their first teaser.

Just started a re-read. Cautiously optimistic that it will work out. The first book Just show us what the channeling is going to look like!

As a whole I liked the series but it could have been about 8 books instead of what we got.

I'm curious how they're going to do this. I have a pretty good picture in my head over what some of the weaves look like when triggered (balefire, etc), but a lot of it early on is just basic stuff like fireballs. But I wonder if they're going to show any kind of visual weaving effect of the different powers being directly manipulated?

And yeah, I have no idea how "ageless" translates to the screen. Obviously looking fully adult, but they should definitely avoid any kind of indications of age like lines or wrinkles.

Yeah, but nothing about Moiraine's height is important to her character. Aside from Rand sticking out among the Emond's Fielders, no one's height is of any importance in the story.

Sorta OT, but what are some fantasy novels/series you love?
Well, dozens of novels, so this will just be a list for series (also including some SF): Gormenghast, Book of the New Sun, Earthsea, LOTR (does that count?), Viriconium, Return To Neveryon, The Second Apocalypse, Broken Earth, Illuminatus, and Lilith's Brood.

I'm planning to read Broken Earth this year! I'll check out some of the others I don't recognize (so the ones that aren't Earthsea/LotR). Thanks! I hear so many fantasy fans talk about Sanderson nowadays.

It was mentioned more than once, but the only real impact I can recall (it's been a while since I've read the books) was pointing out how she could dominate a room despite her otherwise small stature, and how Lan would defer to her despite being twice her size.
