As someone who used to be a fan of the books in high school, I wouldn't recommend them. They're overly long, indulgent, awkwardly paced, somewhat sexist, and have the worst filler I've seen. Basically, WoT is a prime example of the excesses of the fantasy genre.I've never read the books, so I just always think of the great Blind Guardian song.
Almost 12,000 pages to read all the books, though? Damn. I can't imagine reading such a long series. Are fans excited for the show?
I am currently reading through the books right now and one thing that gets said over and over again is how the Aes Sedai look "ageless" and to me it looks like they intentionally made Rosamund Pike look older which doesn't really fit in my mind.....I don't love it.
But it's such a small glimpse. It doesn't really tell anything, so I'm holding off actual judgment, but my snap reaction was "really??"
Kinda makes me hate these slow drips but I can't make myself stop looking at them.
I finished the series for the first time last year and this is the show that I am looking forward to most.I've never read the books, so I just always think of the great Blind Guardian song.

I have no idea how they’d actually translate that to the screen though.I am currently reading through the books right now and one thing that gets said over and over again is how the Aes Sedai look "ageless" and to me it looks like they intentionally made Rosamund Pike look older which doesn't really fit in my mind.
Sorta OT, but what are some fantasy novels/series you love?As someone who used to be a fan of the books in high school, I wouldn't recommend them. They're overly long, indulgent, awkwardly paced, somewhat sexist, and have the worst filler I've seen. Basically, WoT is a prime example of the excesses of the fantasy genre.
Yeah, It's tough and I don't want to go into it too much, but it just seems like they are intentionally making Rosamund Pike look older compared to other recent movies she's been in.I have no idea how they’d actually translate that to the screen though.
I picture Cate Blanchett in Lord of the Rings when I think ageless.I have no idea how they’d actually translate that to the screen though.
Maybe they're going to shoot to make them all look to be about the same age. Aging her up just a bit makes that more attainable.Yeah, It's tough and I don't want to go into it too much, but it just seems like they are intentionally making Rosamund Pike look older compared to other recent movies she's been in.
Cast someone younger or use digital makeup. I forgot about that aspect of them until the poster you responded to mentioned it. It would be a cool aspect to carry over to the show. The description of people cut from the source being neigh unrecognizable further cemented it wasn't just a small visual change.I have no idea how they’d actually translate that to the screen though.
I don't like to comment on women's faces or bodies because *gestures at everything* but yes, she looks older here than normal. I don't know if it's the lighting, the effects, makeup, or what, but it was jarring and not what I expected.I am currently reading through the books right now and one thing that gets said over and over again is how the Aes Sedai look "ageless" and to me it looks like they intentionally made Rosamund Pike look older which doesn't really fit in my mind.
That’s exactly what I think of too. Kind of an “airbrushed” look tbh.I picture Cate Blanchett in Lord of the Rings when I think ageless.
Sanderson really brought new life to the series, I'd highly suggest getting the cliffs notes for the last Jordan books and giving the gathering storm a shot.I made it to book nine before I completely lost interest. The good parts of the books are sandwiched in between so much mind numbing waffle, especially from book five onwards. Hopefully the TV show can rectify this. Well it has to really otherwise it would be impossible to film. Not really feeling Like as Moraine based on that image. Will see how she pans out.
Exactly my take, too.As someone who used to be a fan of the books in high school, I wouldn't recommend them. They're overly long, indulgent, awkwardly paced, somewhat sexist, and have the worst filler I've seen. Basically, WoT is a prime example of the excesses of the fantasy genre.
Hell, it's one of my favorite series and I still wouldn't recommend it lol. It's just too long and there are better series out there for your time. Plus I still have some pretty big reservations with how things ended, but that's an argument for another day.As someone who used to be a fan of the books in high school, I wouldn't recommend them. They're overly long, indulgent, awkwardly paced, somewhat sexist, and have the worst filler I've seen. Basically, WoT is a prime example of the excesses of the fantasy genre.
Yeah.. I am hesitant as well it's just not how I imagined Moraine to look at all.I don't like to comment on women's faces or bodies because *gestures at everything* but yes, she looks older here than normal. I don't know if it's the lighting, the effects, makeup, or what, but it was jarring and not what I expected.
But maybe it'll be fine? I feel like this story could DEFINITELY serve from deep cuts, removal of heavy unnecessary narration, and changes, so... I'm just gonna wait and see.
God, I'm on book 3 and in the chapters with the girls it's like every 4 sentences "Nynaeve tugged on her braid". I felt like I was going insane!
*smooths skirt with concern*
lol it never stops, buckle upGod, I'm on book 3 and in the chapters with the girls it's like every 4 sentences "Nynaeve tugged on her braid". I felt like I was going insane!
(whispers) that is to keep the character's appearance stable as the actress ages across the filming of the seriesYeah, It's tough and I don't want to go into it too much, but it just seems like they are intentionally making Rosamund Pike look older compared to other recent movies she's been in.
Ha, there’s a reason this is a meme for the series.God, I'm on book 3 and in the chapters with the girls it's like every 4 sentences "Nynaeve tugged on her braid". I felt like I was going insane!
I'm curious how they're going to do this. I have a pretty good picture in my head over what some of the weaves look like when triggered (balefire, etc), but a lot of it early on is just basic stuff like fireballs. But I wonder if they're going to show any kind of visual weaving effect of the different powers being directly manipulated?
Yeah, but nothing about Moiraine's height is important to her character. Aside from Rand sticking out among the Emond's Fielders, no one's height is of any importance in the story. She's a fantastic actress. The only thing I'm concerned about it Moiraine is supposed to be really short and Rosamund tends to come across really tall in her roles LOL
EDIT: Yeah, she's 5'9" so that tracks with my impressions.
Covid. When is this coming out, feels like theyve been talking about it forever.
I think it's naive to draw conclusions about the quality of the shows from the quality of the books.I expext this will be the superior fantasy TV show from Amazon compared to The Lord of the Rings.
That's the first thing I thought as well.I am currently reading through the books right now and one thing that gets said over and over again is how the Aes Sedai look "ageless" and to me it looks like they intentionally made Rosamund Pike look older which doesn't really fit in my mind.
Well, dozens of novels, so this will just be a list for series (also including some SF): Gormenghast, Book of the New Sun, Earthsea, LOTR (does that count?), Viriconium, Return To Neveryon, The Second Apocalypse, Broken Earth, Illuminatus, and Lilith's Brood.
I'm planning to read Broken Earth this year! I'll check out some of the others I don't recognize (so the ones that aren't Earthsea/LotR). Thanks! I hear so many fantasy fans talk about Sanderson nowadays.Well, dozens of novels, so this will just be a list for series (also including some SF): Gormenghast, Book of the New Sun, Earthsea, LOTR (does that count?), Viriconium, Return To Neveryon, The Second Apocalypse, Broken Earth, Illuminatus, and Lilith's Brood.
It was mentioned more than once, but the only real impact I can recall (it's been a while since I've read the books) was pointing out how she could dominate a room despite her otherwise small stature, and how Lan would defer to her despite being twice her size.Yeah, but nothing about Moiraine's height is important to her character. Aside from Rand sticking out among the Emond's Fielders, no one's height is of any importance in the story.
