Go look up old food network challenge cakes. They used to actually look great and the show was a lot more interesting than whatever this is they brought back. I watched one episode of this new one where everyone just used rice krispies and fondant. The "cakes" all melted in the first round and then they all did the same thing for the 2nd and guess what happened again?

Amazing, i thought i was alone in this belief.
I thought regular icing was bad enough but fondant is truly horrible. First time i ate an american cake i thought i was gonna be sick before finishing it.
Yeah, that's always my issue with these kinds of cake in general; they can look really cool, but I just can't with the fondant (... that could be a song title).

Yeah that may be an unfair generalization on my part. I live in britain and ive had almost no run ins with fondant here, everyone just uses regular icing.
But when i went to the states every slice of cake i had was smothered in the stuff, it was bloody awful.
I will say you're not wrong in that it is very prevalent in America for sure, I have been lucky in that the bakeries and cake shops I go to around where I'm from don't rely on fondant very much.
