Loot Container System

In previous DR titles loot was strewn all over the ground making it difficult to tell what was important or useful. It was also extremely taxing on the resources rendering it all out. This was my proposed solution - a loot container system that would allow us to contextualize different drops, clean up the environment, and free up some memory!

Camps
An early prototype of the jungle level with plenty of zombies to kill and several gang bases to raid leading up to a final boss! I also created the fence spawners, bush spawners, and trunk spawners tech for this level. The El Guapo Boss Fight was in the early phases but you get the idea - some crazy kind of drug lord with an electrified metallic fake arm - what else do you need to know?!

-------

Looks like Chuck would've come back (perhaps this was a prequel as it dropped the numbering?). There isn't too much to see from the footage but it's interesting to see something that was canceled nonetheless.

Seems like it would have been just another case of Capcom Vancouver not understanding what made Deadrising good, so I can't say I'm that upset about this never materializing. If Deadrising is ever revived it needs to be rebooted back to the basics of the first game.

Removing all the visible item pickups and dumping them in a box would have been incredibly stupid.

Heartbroken. I've loved every Dead Rising game, especially 3. This series was so near and dear to me

I was literally thinking about the series and how far it had fallen after OTR earlier today. Neat find.

It looks kinda better than 4 or 3 but itll always be a shame Dead Rising as a franchise basically peaked with the first entry (imo).

the loot containers full of weapons and first aid kits on every street corner was one of the reasons DR4 was really lame compared to the previous games

Sucks Capcom Vancouver had idiot managers and Capcom Japan never seemed willing to take a real active role in managing this branch of the company.

From what I recall, they tried to do this at the very end as one of the higher figures that worked on Dead Rising 2 from Japan went to the studio after DR4.
I imagine it was likely to try and salvage this project but as we know that ended up not happening.

Capcom Vancouver was definitely a mismanaged Studio by Capcom. Lack of Japanese contact and their only realy dialog being "Make more Dead Rising" was always going to lead that studio into the ground. Didn't help that the only reason Puzzle Fighter seemed to get greenlit was because "Oh, we might get money off a mobile game". The studio would've benefitted a lot from having some bilingual producers that could've bridged the gap. Much like Matt and Pete did for a time with Capcom Dev 1.

The biggest mistake Dead Rising made as a franchise was going full open-world.

Yeah. DR1 really shows that the series' strength is "Enclosed area with a lot of options for how you want to play" and not the "Wow, this area is so big and killing zombies can be wacky!" that the series really went too far into by the end.

God that frame rate looks rough /s

Really fascinating. Such a shame what turmoil Capcom Vancouver went through with the last game.

the music choice is excellent

Capcom Vancouver was a mess, so I can't say if this could have been good or not.

Hot take: I only wish this came out because then we would have maybe got an Off the Record version with OG Frank

The lootable containers thing seems really tedious, part of the appeal of the games is having random junk strewn about the environment rather than having to dig through cabinets to get stuff.

Still sad the series died though. CV knocked it out of the park with DR2, it and the first game are tied for my favorites. DR3 is still a pretty strong launch title, and I didn't even hate 4 despite all the missteps it made. There was still plenty of things they could have done to get the franchise back on track.

It's funny, I revisited Dead Rising: Case West recently to clean up a couple of achievements I hadn't gotten yet and it sent me down a rabbit hole of Dead Rising and I discovered this cancelled DR Game that I had never even heard about. Apparently, it was supposed to be another in-between game, taking place after DR2 and DR3 with Chuck Greene.

It's a shame CV was closed down. Even messing around with Case West briefly made me realize how much I miss playing a DR game.

Edit- got of topic there.

As far as the game footage, I liked the graphics...the lighting.

i'm sorry it was cancelled, but the one feature they boast sounds unappealing from the get-go LOL

You now what, I remember there being a rumor that went around about how DR4 wasn't meant to be a numbered game, and most of Capcom Vancouver was working on something that was supposed to be a requel/reboot just titled Dead Rising*, and I always thought that was just Cope because 4 was so awful, but seeing that an unnumbered Day of the Dead-themed Dead Rising starring Chuck, and having played the Christmas-themed Dead Rising starring Frank, I'm thinking maybe it was actually true?

Damn this is going to make me really sad. Dead Rising is one of my favorite series, and theres really nothing else like it. I've been wanting to learn Unreal Engine just to make a fan game.

Crazy how they almost made it to 5 considering each sequel got worse and worse. Dead Rising deserves better.

It looks really bad. For starters the series should have established a golden rule to only use settings that are similar to shopping malls in that they have an endless variety of consumer products around to pick up and use as improvised weapons. Doing a casino resort was a clever evolution in 2, then 3 just got it completely wrong amongst its other problems - and this looks like more of the same. A jungle where you take down cartel bosses, seriously?

Yeah... That doesn't sound interesting as a Dead Rising game. Still really nice to get footage of it, I suppose.

I don't think it's that.

It's that Dead Rising is an inherently niche product. It will never be a sales juggernaut, and the sort of changes needed to make it so (e.g. the open world shit) are opposed to what makes the games unique.

You can't thread that needle.

Honestly, this series should have just stoped at 2. Dead Rising 1 was almost a perfect game for what it set out to do, be a Dawn of the Dead simulator. The sequel added some QoL features, mechanics and expanded the map, but after that it just strayed too far from the original and became a parody of itself.

This is not the kind of series that you keep pumping sequels out every few years as it's best off as a once a generation kinda title that just takes the original premise and uses the technology of whatever hardware is out at the time. This series burnt me out bad by DR2.

A lot of fans think 3 is better than 2. My view is 2 is just 1 with extra complications (oh yay I love carrying a bunch of shit I don't want so i can maybe find another item, haul them both to a maintenance room and maybe combine them into something i want), while 3 actually innovates the gameplay in ways both good and bad, but is its own thing while still being DR.

Kinda crazy they never did the obvious "Theme Park" game before trying to go more open world (Yes, it was there in OTR but barely). Felt like a really big missed opportunity. Especially when a lot of the game writes itself at that point.

This right here. I'll always mourn the loss of more Dead Rising. I don't care to mourn the loss of more Dead Rising 3 and 4.

Was wondering why this seemed familiar, I remember this being briefly mentioned in "Dead Rising 4 - What happened?" video.

*Sees no mention of time management* No thanks. Kind of cool to see more concept of it though.

That concept gives me some real Resident Evil 5 vibes but worse.

That said, I'm glad good money wasn't thrown after bad but I really want the series to come back helmed by a new studio.

I've thought they were all fine and this one probably would have been fine too, but I also can't say I'm sad it didn't ever come out. I'm kinda tired of the "fans" telling other fans what we enjoyed about the series, though.

man i miss this series even though i only loved the first game and couldn't get into any of the vancouver ones. the things they could do on next gen consoles and with a cool setting (wasn't a disney world type setting rumored at one point or something?)... it would have to be made internally at capcom japan though because CV didn't get what made dead rising so good

Having just finished a replay of OTR, and having dived back into 3 for the first time since launch, can't say that Im too hard-pressed over not getting another game in the vein of 3/4.

Would love a Dead Rising Remake though

Yeah there could have been so much opportunity in doing a fictional version of Disney World with different themed areas full of gift shops and props to use as weapons, and crazed employees who are still in costume and in character. The vibe of fighting through hordes of zombies in areas full of cutesy animatronic setpieces would be a perfect fit for the series.

And you could have a central Universal Citywalk type area that has all the traditional retail outlet mall shops to provide a lot of the items you wouldnt typically find in a theme park and keep the shopping mall setting consistent. Animals like the DR2 tigers could even come into play with an Animal Kingdom type area.

Was my first thought as well. They'd add an aditional step to picking stuff up that feels unnecessary.
This was seemingly Capcom Vancouver's MO post-Dead Rising 2. They completely tossed the perfect and easily understood horizontal inventory system and replaced it with that awful directional stack system that divided throwables, ranged weapons and melee weapons into separate categories and relegated health items to their own unseen inventory that essentially made it a quick heal button.

It takes more time to fuck around and select a specific weapon in Dead Rising 4 than it does to press right on the d-pad four times in Dead Rising 1.

Judging by the setting, I guess this might have been an attempt to head to Santa Cabeza to finally explore the origins of the virus? Chuck being the one to go there would be a little weird, since he seemed to want to have no part of anything else once his daughter was rescued and Santa Cabeza is way more of a Frank thing, but I guess the in there might be that he heard about a chance to have a full cure for Katie and that compels him to make the trip down there. Not that I would have turned down more Chuck since he's my favorite of the DR protagonists, but the reasoning can be a bit flimsy otherwise for why he's there.

Jesus. Look at that framerate.

That's the smoothest a Dead Rising game has ever looked.

I do hope that Capcom gives Dead Rising another go at some point. I feel like doing some of the smaller anthology titles set in the Dead Rising universe would be really cool.

See different characters, with different weapons and movesets. Kind of like Case: West and Case: Zero but a bit larger in scope. Or like the Dead Rising 3 DLCs but not shit

I love DR and DR2. DR3 is stupid fun but then I had enough.
Chuck is great, but not sure I would love to see a new game from Vancouver.

Gameplay wise, I agree that 2, 3's QoL changes were largely needed and made the game more enjoyable in ways. I will say the visual style from DR1 is still undefeated and I'll die on that hill.
