I worked for a chain of car dealerships in the midwest that employed over 600 people. We had something called the Cash Bash every December and it was amazing.

Every year during Aug, Sept, and Oct every car sale would set aside some money for Xmas bonuses. Each department was rated on performance during those months and you got "Pulls" for how well you did.

So if you were a salesman, you got 1 pull for every car you sold. Parts and Service departments had their own rules.

We'd all get together at this big venue and have catered food and multiple bar stations. Usually just for showing up every employee got 5 drink tickets, and a $50 gift card to a local restaurant. We'd watch a couple of videos (usually bloopers of commercials over the year) and then the pulls would start.

Every store has a giant board with a bunch of cards all over it. When it's your turn you go up and pull an amount of cards you were awarded earlier in the year. Cards had a minimum of $50 on them, and a max of $500 on them. On top of that, there were hidden prizes like 55" TVs, Apple Watches, iPhone, iPads, Surface Pros, and other high end electronics. If you pulled the fancy prizes you could ask for the cash value on the spot, or even just flat out sell it to someone else right there.

It's honestly one of my most fond memories of that job. I got to participate in these parties 3 times, and attend as a guest another 5 (and counting). They've always been a bunch of fun, and I hope the tradition keeps going.

Some people get a little bitter at the randomness of it all, but it seems to be pretty minor. Of the 3 years I participated I usually had over 10 pulls, and was averaging a $600 Xmas bonus (which isn't bad considering I work IT and we got the scraps)

At the start of the event the owner would always arrive with the cash in hand in a big Santa outfit, and he'd pull out roughly a quarter million dollars from his sack to share.

Federal employee here, most we get is catered take-out tray that makes the $30 Italian meal look amazing. The union-sponsored Christmas parties were decent. Typical buffet, drink tickets, DJ/dance floor pretty basic stuff but I expected worse.

The union here in Seattle however, doesn't have a peep of a Christmas party despite paying more in dues.

We(~20 ppl) go out for an buffe style christmas dinner at some nice place. One beer/wine included with the meal usually.
We do them on a weekday, so usually people don't get too carried away drinking wise. There are exceptions of course.

Ours have been fine. Some of them were at the CEO's extremely lavish house with full gourmet catering, some of them were at local places like the aquarium or top of the hub. They're generally really nice...but it's not like we get bonuses, so I kind of feels like a waste of time outside of the free meal.

I work for the government so we get jack shit, end up organizing a dinner on our own, after work hours that we all have to pay for. Fucking sucks but I have a small office and you look like an ass if you don't go, so between that and my wife's Christmas party (teachers, same deal with paying themselves) we'll be in the hole for like $120, pretty dumb.
I work in a small company so we all just bring dishes to work and bullshit for a few hours.

I'm right there with you guys

Here's a question, my company always does their party in the first week of December and I feel like that's too early? Like, Christmas isn't even for another month.

Tend to be absolute carnage every year. Luckily I recently got a promotion so I'm going to a nice restraunt and missing the debauchery this year.

It's really hard to screw up free food and booze, but yet sometimes that happens, though I think i've only had one bad christmas party experience in like 10 years

Ours is a day thing, They're paying for us to go to London for the day and we're doing a day of activities followed by a venue that has a free bar in the evening with a hotel room for us.

Tbh, i can't be arsed with it, i'd rather just hit a local pub for a few pints and a game of pool with a few close colleagues.

My company has it at a family-style restaurant, with a choice of 3 or 4 entrees. Drinks are free. We do a $15 per gift grab bag. Newer employees are forced to sing a christmas song in front of everyone. The biggest downside is they plan seating arrangements ahead of time, so you might get stuck with some undesirables, like that stinky ass gossip, Linda.

My guess is they waited too long to book something closer to christmas? Or all hands on deck towards the end of the year?

Ours is on the 11th, in office, at 11am, for two hours.

Ours is fun. Meet at the boss man's house, he caters food and drinks and gives us all gifts. Can't ask for much more than that.

Used to work at a big company, the parties were lit - open bars with good quality alcohol and food. Now work at a smaller company, it's more of a big fancy free dinner.

They are decent always at university of applied sciences.

Free meal and couple of drinks is enough for me.
I'm not the party type like some of my coworkers.

Some years there have been fistfights and other situations.
Too much liquor and things get nasty.

Boring! We go to some Museum, and after that for a Dinner in a Restaurant, and yeah, it's nice, but it's like all-together 6-7 hrs. I like my colleagues, but i see them so often, there is no real reason to spend even more time with time. I would rather like it, if they just gave me some money instead :D.

Never had a Christmas party were I work due to it being a city government job.

I did go to my girlfriends Christmas party last year that her work had. It was at a hotel suite. Great food but you had to pay for any alcoholic drink. Around 50+ people showed up. There was a raffle, I won a Snuggie.

One year I did go to my sister's Christmas party that was thrown by her employers. I think she invited me to set me up with one of her coworkers. They rented out an entire Italian restaurant for the night. Good time. The people she worked for looked like they were straight out of the Sopranos or Goodfellas. Food was amazing. It was uncomfortable at sometimes. Especially when you're greeted with "Who's this guy?" looking at you like you're not one of us. Toward the end of the night everyone was invited into one of the back room to play cards. I left. I did not want to be in debt to these guys.

When it's a big company and they rent out a hall with a random made bar it can be wild and embarassing, people always go too far, smaller party, like a night out dinner at a hotel, those are more down to earth because you can stay for dinner, get a drink before or after or both and just melt away into the night at any time. The random hall/church place is just piss up central.

Mine's tonight and it should be a good time. My office is big - 300+ people, they do a good job, and you're only allowed to go yourself... no spouses or partners, and while that rubs people the wrong way, I prefer it because it makes it less stuffy, and you don't spend all night meeting people.

Keeps it light, fun...someone usually ends up in trouble for overconsumption... but keeps it interesting.

Large company so each department has a catered lunch brought in and its perfect.

Years ago - at the same company, they stopped the annual 'out of work evening party' – due to reasons you would expect with the serving of alcohol. I never went to any, but the Monday AM stories from the party were something else.

Academia fist fights are totally a thing. Both at university staff barbeques/parties, and sometimes also at conference dinners.

I've only had a few loud arguments before, no fists thrown thankfully.

They're okay.

Frankly, people ordinarily like them because we get to leave for the day after the first 30 minutes of the party or so. So it's like getting a half day with free food for lunch.

I work for a small fiber provider and they rent out the local country club for the night, free alcohol, a meal, and usually a band/DJ. There is always a few people that abuse the free alcohol and have to either be asked to leave or their spouse gets to take them home early.

We always have it at the owner's big fancy house, but luckily it almost always falls on the premiere day for a Star Wars film and this year is no exception. So I never go. It's always on a Thursday to try to convince people to not get blackout drunk and stay late, which is just dumb.
Imagine actually liking Star Wars.

At my old job, they brought Costco muffins. That was it. The thing is, I'm pretty sure that it all came from my supervisor's wallet, so I was thankful for them.

Only got the one in my belt, but it was nice. We went to a really nice, fancy restaurant, got treated to one of the best meals I've ever had, and then we all get extremely expensive Christmas gifts (I got a camera I promptly sold for just under $1,000 the very next day last year).

This is entirely dependent on what is happening at the party, what you enjoy doing, and how much you enjoy your coworkers company.

I love ours, but my coworkers are really fun, we get along great, and I'm a pretty outgoing person.

The last company Christmas party I went to was the day after I learned I might have brain cancer (I didn't. but I didn't know that at the time.) and my boss used me to cover up his extramarital affair with my coworker friend who was also married. It was without a doubt the worst day of my life. Going on two years since that happen. Still have some lingering negative feelings but my life is in a far different place now. So that's good!

In my experience companies usually hire a ballroom or something (think a typical wedding venue), put on a meal with a couple of free drinks per person, and then have some entertainment like a live band or DJ. My current place has placement students from various universities and traditionally they organise the entertainment, so we've had some... interesting ideas.

I don't think anybody is hugely keen on the work Christmas party because it's not like you can really let your hair down, but free meal and some free drinks, so whatever.

Usually my department will organise our own little party, maybe at an Indian restaurant, which is better because it's people I like and none of the directors etc are there.

I worked somewhere a few years back with a younger workforce where they'd put on a casino event, in which everyone's given £1,000 fake money and whoever has the most at the end wins a usually quite nice prize. That was fun.

At this place I worked at years ago, I watched multiple employees hook up with large clients who were invited. There was tons of alcohol flowing and people would just let go and get weird.

Ours are typically only org level or smaller. Org ones are mostly just food and white elephant gift exchanges.

Team level ones are more fun. They're usually at someone's house, and maybe like 30ish people.

My company does a great job. They have a nice spread with open bar (even though I don't drink, others appreciate it). The DJ last year was pretty good. There are usually prizes given out too.

Much better than my last job.

I work in games. We get a large bar hired out with an unlimited tab, spouses are invited, and there's usually catered food that ranges from okay to pretty good. Nearly everyone gets completely wasted. We usually get pizza or bacon sandwiches delivered around midnight. Most people in the studio know each other so it's not awkward in that sense, and most of us are fairly socially well-adjusted, so, eh. Never had to deal with the whole Xmas party fear everyone else talks about, to be honest.

Pretty epic. Usually around 500 people. Fully formal. Big ballroom with chefs at multiple stations cooking up amazing food, open bar, door prizes including $5k, iPads, hotel stays and other random stuff. A draw for a paid week long trip to anywhere you want to go plus $7k spending money. Live bands. We do it after Christmas though. Ours is Jan 17th.

It kind of a christmas and new years party rolled into one. They just call it the Winter Gala

From what I've heard they're incredible, the theme this year is Masquerade Ball. This is my first time going at my current job.

My old job we were only open for half of the day and got paid for the rest. Then around 7 that night they had catered food, brought movies, games, etc. It was a very nice night.

Around 200 people, a buffet style stand up dinner and free drinks with a DJ afterwards and a gift basket for everyone + a raffle for bigger presents. It's nice although there's always the usual suspects that get way coked up on the parking lot.

I usually just stay there for the dinner and one or two drinks and then I go home. I don't like getting things further around coworkers.

It's like a family / friends dinner. Everybody baking / cooking something, a little bit of alcohol, lots of talking and laughing and having fun. Nothing big. Lowkey.

Well, this is a place where the Nazis murdered more than 10.000 people, so we keep it down a bit.

We had ours last friday. I'm lucky being in a company with wonderful and great people from all over the world. This years Christmas party had a Gatsby theme so everyone where fancy dressed (not needed of course), it was great fun! Although knowing we were having buffet, I could already tell the food would suck and it did, all the way down to dessert, it sucked. Left early cause a lot of people is giving me minor anxiety attacks, but I always try to muster through, but gave up when everyone started the drinking and since I don't drink cause I'm too old for that shit and left happy and pleased anyway.

Still have 4 drink tickets left in my suit!

I never went, it was always forced niceties and boring ass conversations with people that didn't really matter to me. I did plenty of other things to socialize with the right people within the company to keep my career progressing so I wasn't too concerned.

At my new company I got called out for not going last year, since we are smaller, so I have to go this year. It's at a brewery so won't be all bad.

Our christmas party is all employees eating free food in the lunchroom together for a couple hours while management occasionally makes announcements or gives general company performance updates. You get an extended lunch during work hours (without losing any pay) and you get free food. They also raffle off some gifts. Can't complain!
I like it better than any sort of after-hours option because it happens during work hours at a place I'm already at, so I'm not giving up any free time to be there, and it makes the work day shorter by biting a couple hours off of it. I probably wouldn't even go if it was an after-hours sort of thing.
