I have no idea if the game will be fun to play, but it's so incredibly beautiful that I must buy it.

The video was still unlisted when I shared it, and only had like 50 views. Wow.

Cutscenes are pretty, but the animation outside of the cutscenes seems very stiff and lacking frames.

Still, I'm glad to see more 2D games that look like this.

So, what kind of game is it? A platformer? A cinematic platformer a la Flashback/Another World/Abe's Oddysee (you know, weighty precise controls vs the instant Mari-like response)? A point & click style game? Something else?

After looking forward to this game ever since it was announced, i seemed to have missed the release date announcement until i checked the game's twitter page. Glad to see it's coming out soon now. Should be a day one purchase (depending on reviews). I'm curious if the gameplay will be compelling enough as it seems very light, if that makes sense.

Which doesn't explain any of my questions about the gameplay other than not being point & click. Care to enlighten us?

Which review in particular explains that well then, none of the quotes in that thread do (also it's cinematic adventure in what you quote there, not cinematic platformer like you joined it together from different instances, so it doesn't necessarily imply weighty controls a la Abe's Oddysee, just that it has an emphasis on story telling, but even if it said cinematic platformer or similar that doesn't necessarily imply it would control like those games classic games in the coined genre term either). The closest I saw to a description of how it plays was a quote talking about "skillful platforming" which again could either be like Mario or Flashback or Prince of Persia or Braid or...

No clue about the weightiness specifically; you'll have to dig through some of the reviews. Maybe ask in the review thread.

EDIT: Going through the reviews I found these bits about the platforming:
The aforementioned platforming mechanics may have gotten a little tiresome had they stuck to the basics, but as Anne gains access to her own set of mechanical wings, things start to open up a whole lot more. With the height of your jump more than tripled, crossing gorges is no longer a problem, while rooftops of the neighbourhood become a much more viable way of getting about. And even if you were to mistime a jump, you'll gracefully flutter back to the ground without a scratch. [...]

With no death penalty, the title's main challenges can be found in its puzzles.

Forgotton Anne's jumping mechanic can be frustrating, however. Anne's leaps often feel imprecise, especially when using her Arca-powered wings, with it seeming like she can only jump at a few different angles. She'll often jump too far or too low for a platform, or straight up when you wanted her to jump at 45 degrees to her right. It can lead to some frustrating moments, especially during the few platforming heavy sections that are spread throughout the game. Anne can't die from falling, but you'll be climbing the same sections a few times after she misses a jump or two.

The latter stages of the game see you giving chase across the rooftops and through a factory with a heavy focus on platforming. While none of the actual moves are difficult to achieve, the execution can be frustratingly slow, particularly if you miss a jump and have to position Anne precisely, suffer an overly long animation while she readjusts, jump, then wait agonisingly as she pulls herself up onto the ledge. Everything just feels like it takes a fraction of a second too long. Then there are the moments where it isn't clear what you must do next. Do you need to interact with an object? Which direction should you be heading in? Have you missed something that is preventing your progress? More often than not when I found myself in this situation it was because I hadn't positioned Anne in quite the right place to trigger a dialogue with another character. It is a shame because otherwise the game is exceptionally delivered, but the ponderous pace of it at times takes some of the shine off.

I'm trying to find a physical release of this game for a present. So far the only physical release I found is a Japanese version. Does anyone know if that will have english voice acting?

As far as title fuck-ups go, this one is absolutely up there with the legends, if not at the very tippy top.

I should say it's all the more baffling given this was published by a major publisher, but then that publisher is Square Enix of all publishers.
