The things that jump out at me:

-not paying them on time and needing to be reminded
-Derrick feeling anxious to leave the house with the implication that he would be punished if he missed a story
-not being able to do anything else they wanted to do
-that PowerPoint presentation where derrick’s enthusiasm is questioned and whether he should still be employed by GX
-the NDA

that’s not even all of it - sounds like a nightmare situation with a bullying boss...
Those in particular, but this portion in reference to the ppt is also bad:
"how I was bringing in less money for the channel then what I was being paid. It ended with a question of whether I was still loyal "

I also don't see the game club correlation Andre made according to Derrick. Just makes it sound like Andre is cranky game club didn't perform to expectations.

Like wtf?? How does Andre even begin to justify this?

A... non-complete clause!? In entertainment journalism!? Like he's afraid you'll go a competitor with the secret technology behind the analysis machine? GX didn't spend millions in R&D on that machine just to let IGN get their hands on it!

There's plenty of other bullshit in that story but somehow that last detail by itself just screams paranoid control freak.
Yeah, a non-compete in this section of the industry is absolutely crazy. Shows just how little Andre knows how to be an effective boss. It doesn't even benefit him any other to hold people hostage, any sane human would know putting that in a contract would scare employees off (like it did here)

Derrick's content was always my favourite to watch. He did a shitload for that channel both in quantity and quality. It's a shame he got treated that way in the end, it sounds like Andre wanted to control everything while producing a very minuscule amount of content himself. And Jon getting paid less than half of what Derrick did for the same huge amount of work... yikes. Sounds like these guys really stuck around far longer than they should have.

Non-compete clauses are bullshit in general but in certain sectors there's at least a defensible rationale behind them. Youtube channels about Nintendo is not one of those sectors. Andre is nuts if he thinks that's reasonable.

Wow Derrick's statement is definitely revealing. While I understand the GVG crew doesn't intend to undermine GX, I've personally come to the decision that I don't want to support Andre anymore.

I'm really impressed that the GVG crew found the courage to strike out on their own. I'm happy to support them and I've been really enjoying their show.

Holy fuck. Derrick really treated GX like it was his baby and did so much of the grunt work to be treated like that? Like the update stuff totally makes sense because Derrick always took care of that. When Jon came in, they were splitting that. It was uncommon for Andre to do updates.

See now I'm being reminded how when the guys left Andre would tweet out heart emojis to them. He knew what he was doing lol. Oh man. He knew it would look bad that everyone left so he tried to make it look good as if it was just a cordial split based on creative differences. Complete lack of care for others, especially those who made it possible for your company to even succeed lmao.

Holy shit.... Derrick— I’m just glad to hear you made it through all of this stronger and are happier now. Life transitions are hell, and you deserved an employer who supported you through them. Thank you for giving us all a reason to smile with through your videos and hard work.

This feels very similar to what happened with Channel Awesome...

It always felt like Derrick was the one keeping things afloat at GX, doubt it will last in any meaningful capacity after this which is a shame for the new crew.

how I was bringing in less money for the channel then what I was being paid.
This quote just doesn't sit right for me. I've been following GameXplain for years and I know Andre is the boss and created the channel but Derrick was doing more heavy lifting on the channel in terms of output from what I observed. More analyses, news updates, reviews, game and watches, discussions, streams, the podcast etc. Jon and Steve too once they joined. We also know Steve maintained the email server and managed developer relations.

Felt like they were doing far more for the channel. I hope the new employees are being treated better.

Hi everyone! Derrick has prepared a statement regarding this situation, but he doesn't have an Era account so I'm posting it on his behalf. I am also preparing my own statement which I will post later, but for now all I'll say is that I fully back everything Steve and now Derrick have said about the situation. It's all true.

That said, I would like to echo Derrick and Steve's reminders that it has never been our intention to have Good Vibes Gaming compete with or undermine GX. The new crew of Joey, Tris, and Chris (as well as my good friend Tom, who remains at GX) deserve the same love and consideration you all have graciously shown us over the years and we are NOT asking you to unsubscribe from GX or pull support from their Patreon. We'd also like to remind you that while we understand your desire for Andre to make a statement, we strongly ask that you don't harass him; we appreciate your sympathy and support, but we categorically do not want this to turn into a witch hunt.

And now, Derrick's statement:

Obviously, I’ve never posted to ResetEra before this, but I wanted to get some things out there that I’ve bottled up for some time now. I also want to provide some more context if possible, but these are just some of my experiences. First, none of us knew how much each other was making. All I knew was that I was making the most of all the employees as I had been there the longest. Each year, I would get a raise until I topped out at $5k/month in 2018. Despite asking for my yearly raise, Andre said that the channel couldn’t afford it as by that point Jon had been brought on. I didn’t mind though as having Jon on the team was a lifesaver. He was able to do updates and keep an eye on the channel, lightening my daily work load significantly. I felt expected to be on call at all times and would be nervous to even leave my home most days, fearing that some random Nintendo news would come out. This didn’t really go away until Jon joined and Aimee pushed me to take time for myself. Rarely did Andre handle an update and when it was just him, he would wait until either Jon or myself was free again to actually handle it. Before then, it always had to be done ASAP. As for GameXplain’s income, I was able to see the analytics for quite some time and the estimation is mostly on point though there were some months where it would dip below that estimation. But the high end always felt massive and I hoped that the rest of the team, especially Jon, was being compensated with that extra income. That said, I had to handle any work expenses myself for the most part, including consoles and equipment. The only part of my current setup provided by Andre is my mic. I paid for my flights to LA for E3 or trains to NY for Nintendo events while Andre would handle the cost of hotels if needed and meals if we were together. I never said anything as the expenses could be used as write-offs for my taxes and helped at the end of the year.

However, this year felt different as the team started talking more. I discovered that Jon was making less than half of what I did despite doing the same amount of work, Steve’s income has already been brought up, and Ash had stepped back from the channel for only occasional work. He would send invoices that Andre would eventually get to, but Andre always had to be reminded to send our paychecks out. We tried to get a calendar started so he could be more consistent but he resisted the idea. One other thing to know is that despite a Discord where we all chatted and coordinated, Andre would often DM each of us to ask specific things. Ostensibly it was so we could see them better, but often it felt like a way to strongarm for videos he wanted. There were many times when he wanted an update on something that I didn’t feel was worth the time as I was working on other things, but he would push until I relented. Sometimes he gave up, but that was rare. It got to a point where I would ignore or put off looking at his DMs if I was busy with something else or be more combative over the updates he wanted to put out. Andre was extremely controlling, seemingly timing things to directly disrupt plans. He gave Jon tons of work when his YouTube channel took off, making it difficult for him to make videos there. He also asked me to stop streaming to YouTube as he didn’t like old game playthroughs mixed in with our current events style. As a side note, any money I earned from Superchat had to be totaled by me and invoiced at the end of the year as a “bonus.” So leaving to Twitch served as a chance to earn money more immediately, especially with a baby on the way and Aimee still unable to work on her own projects due to the effects of COVID. I prepared people for the move for a while as I completed the final playthrough, but on the day of the final stream, Andre contacted me and asked that I stream to GameXplain’s Twitch instead.

His reason was that he wouldn’t be able to make me properly full-time if I streamed to my own Twitch, something he had been building toward through most of the year. If I streamed to my own Twitch, I would be considered a freelancer and immediately have my pay removed with rates estimated at $15-$20 per update and $100-$150 per feature or review. He said I could have full control of the GameXplain Twitch though so I felt strong-armed into taking the deal. I still got the money from subs and bits monthly but I had to go through him. It also felt like he dragged his feet to confirm Affiliate status because he thought me streaming would somehow turn people away from the new Game Club tier on the Patreon. Around September, he asked me to join a voice call where he wanted to discuss me at GameXplain going forward. I popped in at the appointed time and he asked to be on camera. It turns out he had prepared a PowerPoint where he ran down several things. How COVID had affected ad rates and lowered income, how he was still paying me the same despite this, how I was fighting him when updates had to be done, and ultimately, how I was bringing in less money for the channel then what I was being paid. It ended with a question of whether I was still loyal and still wanted an official full-time position. Again, with a baby on the way, I was scared to the point of meekness because I felt I couldn’t put Aimee and the baby in that position.

When Andre finally presented me with the full-time contract, I was in the middle of a nightmare moving situation where I could barely focus on anything. He pushed the fact that I had to make a decision as soon as possible due to timing, but I could not change my income situation without messing up my loan application. Ultimately, he gave me the time I needed and talked to the loan officers as my boss to help me get my loan. But in the intervening time, I was able to take a closer look at the contract. There were no defined set hours, no increase in pay, no overtime, no health coverage (not enough full-time employees), and overtime would only translate to extra time off, not extra pay. In addition, he wanted to approve where I appeared and when I streamed, taking away the one bit of control I had with the Twitch. It felt like I had no say in my life, everything had to go through him if I wanted to earn money beyond GameXplain. But worst of all was an NDA included with the contract. Tucked in the many points listed was a non-compete clause. Basically if I signed the contract and left or was fired from GameXplain for any reason, I would not be able to work in the same space for a year. I took this to mean no YouTube, no games media, nothing. I talked to a lot of people around this time, trying to figure out what to do. After speaking with all of them, including Aimee, Ash, Steve, and Jon, I ultimately decided to leave with Ash and Steve coming with me so we could pursue Ash’s idea of Good Vibes Gaming. It felt better to leave and attempt my own thing rather than deal with that contract and the general stress and pressure of GameXplain. Money is tight, but I am so much happier now.

I can only gratefully thank all of you who have supported Good Vibes Gaming so far whether as part of our Patreon, watching my streams, or subscribing to the channel. It means the world to me that I can happily pursue my ideas and I look forward to sharing them with our fans. Ultimately though, no matter what, I request that you don’t harass any of the new hires, Tom, or Andre. I merely want to provide more context and shed light on the position I was coming from. Thank you all for your support and take care.
Hey Ash,
Thank you for providing Derricks statement on the matter. On the front end it may have seemed fine to viewers, but the backend I can see the reason for what happened.

I really enjoy all of you, Derrick and Steve as well as any other people that helped you create the GVG channel. I’ve followed since the moment of your guys announcement and hope a successful future.

Ok, so I know I may get flak for this....but, if I'm being honest, a lot of the vibes you get from these type of work stories coming to light, wholely manifest in the type of content GX has churned out over the years. And to be honest, its why even as a Nintendo guy I've almost never liked their videos, even if in theory they've been all "just positive dudes liking video games".

The bulk of GX content has stuck out to me as entirely useless the second a game is released or more info is released. "Look at this bridge on the left hand side of the screen that's shown for 0.5 seconds at the 2:55 minute mark. Could this mean that there's more to see in this area of the map? *hahah* we'll have to wait til release day to be sure, but it sure is intriguing!"

Its content that when combined with an "always be positive" wash, really just serves as an extension of marketing. Not quality content that stands any test of time. An occasional speculation or hype fest is one thing. But that being the bulk of your content doesn't sit well with me. And knowing that there was often a mandate of "stick near your computer because you better be ready the moment a story drops!" only compounds that.

I wish the ex-pats all the best, and hope Andre sees the error of his ways. But GX content has always been....quite frankly, very disposable. And now even more-so.

It's kinda sad when you realize the first time we know for sure Andre paid his employees on time was when Patreon took an automatic payment from his account to their new channel good vibes gaming.

Very disappointing to hear, I'm surprised the actual content on the channel was kept so jolly with those type of issues occurring.

I hope the new hires aren't being treated the same way, you'd think an exodus would open Andres eyes at least..?

yeah after reading that statement straight from Derrick it’s hard to give Andre any sort of benefit of doubt. Will still hold out hope for some explanation but Derrick would not fabricate stuff and it being backed up by Ash too is damning. Sad situation.

This sounds really fucked up from Derrick's statement. Frankly I wish for the best for GX's new hires but I can't in good conscience continue supporting Andre anymore. Frankly I feel like whatever statement Andre makes is going to be suspect as hell, because at this point I feel like he's taking this much time to try and find ways to downplay the claims. If the claims aren't true I think a statement would be out by now (and we'd have less of the different members corroborating each other's stories). And if they are true, I have a hard time of thinking of any justification that makes it remotely ok

Definitely feel like if we get anything it will lean more towards apology and not towards explanation.

yeah I can't imagine what Andre would say that would please anyone. Best case scenario for him is to work behind the scenes to offer a gesture (of money) to the people effected, and they come forward saying they've made amends and to drop it. This likely hasn't reached 95% of GX's audience, so smartest move would be to just make the effected people happy ASAP and nip it in the bud.

However, this will likely cause some fresh employment conversations to happen with the current GX crew.

Wow, I can't imagine putting up with that shit and still taking the high ground. I would want Andre to suffer if our situations were reversed. However, in the spirit of your high road taking approach, I will say this... I hope Andre can see what he did, how it effected people, and why it was unquestionably wrong. I hope he tries to right these wrongs in a sincere and genuine manner. I also hope that he endeavors to treat his new employees far, far better than he did with the former batch. Maybe he will be horrified by his previous actions. Maybe things got away from him and he didn't realize how conniving and manipulative he had become. I have my doubts, but I hope he can be better in the future for everyone's sake.

Earlier while this was breaking I might have bought the idea that this was just the result of Andre not being good at running a business and not thinking through the payment he was giving his employees well enough due to poor planning and inexperience. But stuff like the Derrick post definitely makes this feel way more malicious and controlling in an incredibly shitty way. At this point an apology is nice but meaningless without accumulating evidence of improvement and that literally can't manifest without a few years passing

Reading Derrick's statement and then remembering how often they would talk about Andre taking constant trips to Disneyland in the Real Talk podcast really puts it all into perspective.

I hope the new crew and Tom are doing okay.

it seems to me like Andre was pocketing most of the money, while taking trips to Disneyland and not paying Derrick/Jon/Steve enough

as much as I loved GX for a number of years. I think I subbed back with the review of X & Y or so (which was done by Derrick nonetheless). I just can’t support Andre for what has come out with the latest statement from Derrick and other ex-GX cast.

Unless Andre releases a very deep apology statement and how things will change in the future. I’m likely not supporting GX anymore

Here is some more context I saw based on what Ashley (Steve's wife) said on the subreddit when asked about it:

Thanks! It’s no trouble. [The phone situation] absolutely wasn’t trivial, at least not to Steve. He was already planning on switching to Android in order to play game pass and stadia and had (as shown above) been vocal about it. He was upset for days.

I know that sounds kind of wrong to you guys but it should not at all. You deserve it after all of that.

Well that all sounds very disappointing. Andre comes across as a greedy and incompetent boss in these accounts, with a very poorly maintained work environment that existed to his benefit.

I haven't watched much GX in the last couple of years besides the odd video, but I went ahead and subscribed to GVG to show my support for striking out amidst all this uncertainty.

I am so sorry Derrick. You did not deserve all of this. I am so glad you are a lot more happy now. I am so glad you are out of that toxic environment.

Andre. What the literal fuck.
Aimee is my wife’s childhood best friend. Derrick and Aimee are great people. They are great for each other and glad to see the momentum on their YT!
It seems like most of the crew was honestly saved by the partners. Honestly, Steve's Wife is so brave for putting this forward. Props to Aimee for letting Derrick thrive in his own space. She has honestly changed helped Derrick change for the better. He looks so much healthier.
