Squire Patton Boggs is pleased to announce that former U.S. Congressmen Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and Bill Shuster (R-PA) are joining the firm effective immediately. With this hire, the firm adds two of the most sought after former members of the U.S. House of Representatives to its global public policy practice. We welcome their arrival.

These additions enhance the firm's unrivalled bipartisan credentials that already include former Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), Senator John Breaux (D-LA), Representative Jack Kingston (R-GA), Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater (D-AR) and a deep roster of experienced professionals spanning major capitals across six continents.
"Joe Crowley and Bill Shuster have been leaders in their respective parties and are two of the most effective legislators of their generation," said Senators Breaux and Lott, who co-chair Squire Patton Boggs' public policy practice. "The skills and experience Bill and Joe bring will be an asset for clients all over the world who are seeking to navigate the challenges of modern-day Washington. They are a blockbuster addition to our global, bipartisan public policy practice."

Crowley and Shuster head to K Street

The hiring gives their firm a bipartisan duo of former lawmakers.

Former Reps. Joe Crowley and Bill Shuster are heading to K Street, making them one of the rare bipartisan pairs of former lawmakers to team up as lobbyists after leaving office.

Crowley, a New York Democrat, and Shuster, a Pennsylvania Republican, are joining Squire Patton Boggs, one of the largest law and lobbying firms in Washington.
Crowley spent two decades in Congress, rising to become the No. 4 House Democrat before losing his primary last year to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He was particularly sought after on K Street after leaving office last month as the highest-profile House Democrat leaving Congress as the party took control of the chamber. He held preliminary discussions with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and Hogan Lovells, among other firms, before deciding to head to Squire Patton Boggs, according to people familiar with the matter.
It's nice to see former Rep. Joe Crowley land on his feet after his unexpected loss to AOC last year.

The congressman to lobbyist pipeline needs to be made illegal

It absolutely should... But how? The people who make the laws are the people directly benefiting from them. And even if we had enough people willing to stop the revolving door, what's to prevent future elected officials from changing the law back?

Man, why are Bernie and AOC always pushing this class warfare narrative? Can't we just go back to being centrists? That'll fix things after we get weird uncle trump out of office

Fix the rules. The reason this happens is that a guy like him has a lifetime of personal contacts built up.

mexico president wants to establish a law that forbids exiting public servants to work on private business related to the position they held in goverment for at least 10 years

i dont know if he is gonna make it, but it sounds good to me

And they wonder why people don't trust that our politicians act with the people they represent in mind. They are in these companies pockets so deep its crazy. They should have to wear badges of every company they take money from like Nascar drivers. Or better yet, just get all the money from lobbyists out of Washington all together.

Update: Joe Crowley is working for Trump now.

The Hill: Crowley joins coalition to pass Trump's new NAFTA
Former Democratic Rep. Joseph Crowley (N.Y.) is joining a coalition to help secure passage of President Trump's new trade agreement with Mexico and Canada.

Crowley on Thursday was named honorary co-chairman of Pass USMCA, a coalition of business, trade and advocacy groups promoting swift passage of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The coalition was launched earlier this month by President Trump's former deputy chief of staff, Rick Dearborn.

Dearborn told The Hill that the coalition approached Crowley to join the effort and is focusing on getting Democrats on board with the president's trade agreement.

"I think that's the smart focus," Dearborn told The Hill. "There's a lot of fresh new faces in the Democratic caucus [and we will be] providing them really good information, answering their questions, and ultimately I'm hopeful that they can see clear to be supportive of the deal.

Some background on the new trade deal:

The Nation Op-ed: Trump's Reality-TV Trade Deal
He claims the new North American bill is a victory for US manufacturing, but it's a lot like the TPP and does very little for US workers.

In reality, there is not much in this package that was not also in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), from which Trump removed the United States shortly after taking office. And progressives should oppose Trump's "historic" new trade deal for the same reasons they opposed the TPP.
With this background in mind, we can ask who will win and who will lose from USMCA. Here we can pretty much go back to the story with the TPP.

Like the TPP, the USMCA includes a variety of measures that strengthen and lengthen patent and copyright monopolies as well as related protections. This is good news for the industries that benefit from these protections, especially the prescription-drug industry, but it's bad news for pretty much everyone else.
During his campaign, Trump frequently denounced the outrageous prices the pharmaceutical companies charge for drugs. He has a strange way of clamping down on the industry, though; apparently, it's to make people in Canada and other countries pay more for their drugs.

People who own stock in pharmaceutical companies should expect to see higher profits and therefore higher stock prices, but pretty much everyone else is harmed rather than helped in this deal. Locking in stronger protections (yes, this is protectionism, the opposite of free trade) makes it more difficult for people in the United States to seek out lower-cost drugs elsewhere.

Always nice to see my belief that (most) politicians have no morals whatsoever in pursuit of money being reinforced. Something something late stage capitalism, something something, corporations control the population and government and always will.

Joining a group working to make sure NAFTA doesn't fail a vote isn't "Working for Trump."

Letting the trade deal collapse would be catastrophic, which is why even xenophobic racist Trump, lover of Tariffs ended up having to keep it in place.
