Formula 1 will end the long-standing practice of using walk-on grid girls, commencing with the start of the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season. These changes also apply to our other motorsports series that take place during the Grands Prix weekends.
...
“Over the last year we have looked at a number of areas which we felt needed updating so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport," said Sean Bratches, Managing Director, Commercial Operations at Formula 1.

"While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms. We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world.”
I personally would have also been fine with using a mix of grid boys and grid girls, but I think it's a good move to make the sport more open to women.

Did the Pit girls ever complain about this? If they didn't then I don't see it as an issue.

Where's that pixellated GIF of Mark Webber spraying the champagne when you need it.

Just because one woman doesn't object, that doesn't mean the practice isn't objectifying of women, of course.
I know someone who's done this exact job in F1, lets not beat around the bush when I say everyone involved knows this.
In fact it got them noticed to go on and do bigger things.

Remember when they tried grid boys and Vettel complained? That was pretty funny.

Does it matter? It's not about what the people evolved want or feel about it. It's about what F1 wants to be and look like.
Oh come on, F1 didn't care about this issue until people brought it up, people who don't even watch the sport but saw it as a social problem they wanted fixed. There's no problem with that but most grid girls seemed to want the practice to continue, or at least have it be reformed or made more relevant rather than axing it completely.

As a lapsed fan who used to watch for most of the 2000s they were hardly ever featured in the tv coverage anyway as everybody just wanted to get to the drivers and it always struck me as kind of silly even then. It got a lot more degrading in recent years though, when I tuned into a few one off races. At one of the races they made them all wear fake tattoo QR codes that could be scanned and once they started doing those boring post race podium interviews they made them come up and applaud the drivers on the podium, I don't imagine being sprayed in the face with Champagne is all that pleasant to be honest.

Might have to do with F1's new American owners, too.

Good to hear. I recall them discussing this for a bit in the past.

Bah, two more months until Albert Park. :(

pretty lame, tbh, not that I watched F1 racing but i never knew this as demeaning or degrading in any way, not sure if that is the case though. if it was, good for them, or just make it so it's not?

I read a blog post from a woman about this, that visiting a race as a child she noticed all the engineers, crews and driver' were men and the only women were the grid girls. At the time she thought it was because that's all the women were allowed to do (or something along that vein).

Things like that stuck with a person. I'm glad to be rid of the practice.

What a stupid decision.

But thinking of it, I don't really care. I haven't watched a single minute of it since I was there on the qualifying after they introduced the new hybrid engines and they had such a shitty noise we could easily chat with eachother on the grandstand.

It's incredible what a boring, overregulated, shitty shadow of it's former self this race series has become.

Edit: and there really were grid boys on a race? I mean... really? :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Totally agree with you, my point was that since the subject was brought up and got attention - even if it was by people who don't care about the sport, annoying I know - the owners decided it's better to stop that practice.

But as someone who has been watching F1 since 1999, I don't care at all, imo it's exactly as SomethingInTheSea said:

Dumb thing to change - the women got paid well and didn't have any objections. My enjoyment of motorsports isn't contingent on grid girls at the end of the days.

Maybe, I mean cheerleaders are still part of football for the most part but some teams got rid of their cheerleading groups, maybe that's the same deal here.
My understanding about say, the Dallas Cheerleaders, is that they work their asses off and put their lives on hold and they get paid relatively jack shit to do it.

I guess they must really want to do it, though.

Very nice! I mean, even if they didn't complain or even if there wasn't any specific situation that asked for giving up the practice, I think it's good to update the sport as such. It's a weird practice that does not at all feel like it has a place in this modern society.

Does this mean the women applauding the victorious drivers at the end of the race are gone too? That was the most ridiculous shit of all.

I bet Dubai and other Arab states said look, we don't want alcohol and you're ok with that because we pay a ton of money. Why are there still half naked women?

It’s very odd to find out about grid girls. I was never a fan of F1 but always thought it was classier than nascar but this grid girl shit lmao.

Sounds more like shitty parenting, if things like that stick with you and limit your scope.

Until she watches F1 now and sees that women are part of the crew now and sitting at pit walls.

I guess grid girls were part of F1s stupid "glamour" that's been long gone anyway. Bring in the grid kids like in football!

Those are unfortunately still far and few in between. There's only one female team boss and I'd be surprised if more than five percent of senior team members are women, but I have no stats on that.

I also don't think there's a single prominent out gay person in F1, which also seems to be quite telling about the good-old-boy atmosphere there still is around the sport now.

Since Kaltenborn is gone, the only woman we regularly see is Claire Williams. I can't think of any team that has female mechanics. They usually only do PR related stuff in F1.

Edit: a bit OT, but I had the pleasure of meeting Leena Gade in 2014 who recently became the first female lead race egineer in Indycar. Such a nice and intimadingly smart person.

They were cute. Can’t imagine women suddenly flocking to the sport due to this but ok.

I don't see what's positive about demonizing and elimitating a legit and honest source of work for a bunch of people
Guess what would also be a honest source of work for a bunch of people? Working in Motorsports for more than just walking around as fodder for men to ogle at.

I've watched Motorsports and Formula 1 since I was 10 years old, so coming on for 24 years. Grid girls were outmoded long ago and I'm glad the practice is ending.

You want women in Motorsports? Get them in schools, get them in karts, get them in STEM and get girls on the grid and engineering the cars.

The message of grid girls has always been "Boys race, girls look pretty" and in 2018 we need to be past that.

In fact, do what they do in football. Get kids to accompany the driver's like they do on the walk from the dugout to the pitch. Get the interest in the sport early, and provide a positive image to all involved.

I dont think I've seen any in the actual crew, but more like doing data analyzing on the walls. Mercedes was a team that stood out to me with this but come to think of it, they might be the only one.

What are the chances of a gay F1 driver in a field of 22? Typically 4 % % of the population are gay and that includes women. You'd need at least double the amount of drivers to have any realistic chance of one of them being gay.

The Internet
Who will hold those umbrellas now? I mean if women were being forced to do these jobs that's awful, yet if they're not then it's awful they've lost a weekend's worth of work. A better solution here would have been to have had it open to all genders - both racing and being a 'grid girl'.
