Hey thanks Fort Worth PD, for rushing to post pictures of a gun (which is in violation of her privacy) that had fuck all to do with anything. And wasn't seen or known by Shooty McHairtrigger. May as well have posted the contents of her fridge.

I don't want to minimize the stress or danger of general police work, but this incident broke every rule of common sense and training possible, from where they parked onwards.

Yeah it was clear cut from the beginning this was botched in basically every way possible. It feels like they always start these things by demeaning the person who was shot or killed, and then slowly walk it back if they find out the officer was in the wrong. It’s really pathetic.

Surprisingly, the mayor and chief started the press conference by admitting all of that. I was expecting a shitshow of blame deflection and protecting the officer, but no one tried to claim it was even remotely justified.

Didn't this start off with someone reporting the murdered woman's front door being ajar? They must feel like absolute shit right now :(

Sounds like things are actually proceeding how they should in this instance. It's sad how rare that feels in these cases.

Yeah, the neighbor feels horrible. I can imagine they blame themselves, and they shouldn't. He just wanted a well check, he thought their mother/grandmother (who was in the hospital) may need help. It was a well call to possibly check on a unhealthy person, not in any way a check for criminal activity.

This is fucking shocking in a positive (?) way. Wish I wasn't happy about what feels like a a basic admission of reality.

As someone who technically lives in Fort Worth (thanks gerrymandering), this is fucking shocking in the best way possible. I never would have imagined in a million years that this would go down this way.

The neighbor was legit concerned about the woman, so he called in for a wellness check. Not sure why he thought that but it sounds like the neighbor meant well.
From what i read they went out of their way to report it to the non-emergency number because they feared this type of outcome.

Fucking hell >_< What a fucked up turn of events. My heart goes out to the person trying to do the right thing.

Here's hoping the copper sees the inside of a prison for a very long time.

They let him resign though....instead of firing him.

Go figure.
Can't prevent someone from resigning. Chief still filed the dishonorable discharge paperwork though, so he won't escape the repercussions of getting fired.

An update on criminal charges is supposed to happen tomorrow.

Agreed. I'm happy the city seems to be doing the right thing. Sad that the city doing the right thing is surprising and shocking.

This type of admission should be the norm for incidents like this, not an outlier.

Some good news in there, but it'll probably be treated as a one-off that's not related an institution consistently creating power tripping racist murderers.

And what of the partner? They were there the whole step of the way, right? Never suggested doing something other than pretending to be Solid Snake that I saw in the video. I hold them just as responsible.

Ah, I missed that part. Good.

Hopefully something is filed against them too.

Right. Until the nation recognizes that police are killing black folks at a rate that paints "institutionalized racism" across the sky in bright, flashy letters, I'm afraid that most will.

That said, I give credit to them for this. The killing was indefensible, and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, just like any other killing. Doesn't matter if the person doing the killing is an officer or not.

That video of the shooting was so blurry and was off focus (was the camera mounted on his shoulder?) Needless to say, funny how the police two grainy photos of the gun to stave off backlash. Also, not announcing you're a cop first? Come on man.

If only this weren't a rarity. Good to see them doing the right thing here regardless.

You can't stop someone from pulling the "you can't fire me I quit" unfortunately. But you can put it on his record anyway.
His partner is being treated as a witness to the murder

If the operator didn't communicate this as a welfare check they probably need to be removed as well.

I guess it's progress but the system that empowered this murderer to kill Atatiana Jefferson should be held responsible as well but of course it never will

And he should rot in jail but I have no faith he will get hard time. So I have trouble getting too excited about this
