France and Ireland have said they will oppose an EU trade deal with South American countries unless Brazil takes action to stop the burning of the Amazon.

On the eve of a meeting of the G7 nations in Biarritz, an Élysée source said Emmanuel Macron thought Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, "lied" to him at the G20 meeting in Osaka in June about his climate commitments and therefore France would oppose the Mercosur treaty.

"The decisions and comments of Brazil show that President Bolsonaro has decided not to respect his commitments on the climate or biodiversity," a French official told AFP.

The Mercosur treaty with four Latin American countries – Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay – was signed in June after two decades of negotiation but has not yet been ratified.

This is what needs to be done. EU needs to stop trading with Brazil until they stop fucking up the Amazon. Or just buy products that don't come from that area.

This is exactly what Bolsonaro's agribusiness allies were afraid would happen. They have actually been pressuring him to clamp down on the fires out of fear of being locked out of European markets.

Yes, this is very much needed and every other country in the world should back this. The Amazon burning is not a local or national issue, this affects the entire world.

Good, it's a very dangerous situation and the world cannot afford for the Amazon to burn down.

Bolsonaro: "Help from outside with the fires? That's colonialism!"
Also Bolsonaro: "We don't have enough resources to stop the fires".

The rest of the world can live without the Brazilian beef and other agricultural products. This is the right attitude.

It's great. They'll oppose Brazil too.
They'll definitely get on Bolso's ass for this.

Which is the idea.
lol, the only country in Mercosur that can put any sort of pressure is Argentina, which is unlikely given that it's having its very own meltdown shitshow right now.
Us and Paraguay always get fucked over by those 2, and don't really have that much bargaining power in the large scheme of things.

Varadkar never should have agreed with the deal in the first place. So hypocritical to be talking about climate and making a coalition with greens, while buying beef from Brazil, even without the fires.

It also fucks over our rural communities who rely heavily on beef.

It would be fucking glorious if EU grew some balls and not ratify the meat deal, like with any part of the world, let alone Brazil

Future is less meat and more meat like veggies for the masses

Feels like Argentina has been in constant meltdown since the late 90's.

At least we have France and Ireland with remaining sanity.
The US Dipshit President instead continues his tirade against China.

Punishing other South American countries for what Brazil is doing doesn't sound fair. France has been opposed to the trade deal since before the Amazon fire so it's not a surprise that they are against it now.
