Ellen Page and Paris Berelc are starring in 1UP, an underdog comedy set in the world of gaming that Kyle Newman will direct for BuzzFeed Studios.

Julia Yorks wrote the script that has been described as being in the vein of Pitch Perfect but set in the world of eSports with a Gamergate backdrop.
The story centers on a female gamer named Vivian Lee who quits her college eSports team rather than put up with sexism from her male counterparts. But with her scholarship on the line, she is forced to assemble a Varsity caliber, all-women's team that can compete with the boys. With the help of an enigmatic coach who returns to the spotlight after her own GamerGate scandal, the young woman recruits an unlikely crew of unskilled misfits to kick some serious gamer butt.
1UP is the first feature from BuzzFeed Studios and falls in line with its mission to develop and produce what it sees are socially relevant and high-concept feature films for global millennial and Gen Z audiences.
Exploiting the trauma of an event half a decade ago which we're still feeling the aftereffects of to this day.

And of fucking course they named the main character Vivian.

Edit

A twitter thread from Zoe Quinn, the first target of Gamergate, that you should read.

I don't understand the importance of the main character being named Vivian but it's pretty gross to use the still ongoing hate campaign that is Gamergate like that.

Script written by a woman, starring an actress who understands female empowerment. A female director would have been nice, but I'm fine with this. Certainly far from feeling its "too soon". It happened, it can be depicted and have value.

From the writer of Enter the Anime.

Something like this could be an interesting angle for a movie, but iunno if this the one to get it right. Divorced from all the other stuff, representing an esport match in a dramatic and visually compelling way is something I haven't seen done.

It's set to be a comedy... A comedy centering on a mass harassment campaign that made death threats.

I think you're expecting far too much from this.

I assume the all girls team would win at the end and all those misogynist and harrasment campaign get their come uppance in the end though?

You don't make a supposedly fun comedy movie with these premise and ends with the girls admit they're wrong and quits...

If people want to know who Vivian is.

Thanks for posting this. I never fully understood Gamergate at the time. I was just aware that Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian seemed to make a small but vocal group of incels very angry for no apparent reason.

Could have said the same thing about the Live Action Mulan™ and look how tone deaf that film turned out...

That sounds about what I'd expect from a movie made by Buzzfeed, yes

Not to say that you can't make a comedic movie about this kind of thing, but it'd need to be more Blazing Saddles and less Ben Stiller's Dodgeball

If people want to know who Vivian is.

I can only summarize my reaction to all this by using a quote of this article: "my brain said, “So long, world, it’s been fun,” and leaped to its own death"

The framing of this issue as “the girls will beat the boys in the game competition and everything will be solved” is insipidly banal and stupid. If you want to depict this shit then actually show what it was like, which is tons of harassment, death threats, and hate campaigns launched against women in the industry. Not this bullshit.

Nothing short of a proper documentary can do the whole ordeal justice, but even then victims like Zoë Quinn are still waiting for this to truly be in the past.

True, and something like that should only be pursued when victims of the hate movement are ready to do so. Would also need to illustrate how it morphed into the alt-right.

Sounds like it'll be cringe as hell.

That's not even getting into how it makes light of a targeted harassment campaign. You don't need to have the baggage of that backdrop to have an empowering movie; doubly so if it also happens to be a comedy.

On a final note: Unsolved is the only good part of Buzzfeed.

This is an astounding cavalcade of bad ideas. Maybe this is just me being optimistic, though, but it also sounds like the kind of thing that doesn't actually end up getting made. I can hope at least.

Oh Buzzfeed with your feminine ways, I love you, a movie though...and this movie dough?

Hard to see this ending well, but I’ll watch it like an onlooker of a car crash.

Out of all of this I'm most surprised by Ellen Page who has been pretty outspoken about her experiences with David Cage. What is she doing? Surely there's some research done with a script before signing onto this shit?

So it's every goddamn teen movie from the early 2000s, but with video games.

Those were shit, this will be shit.

Connecting to the Gamergate dots that I didn't know about until this thread will make it extra shit.

This sounds like a terrible idea, especially after reading that Zoe Quinn thread.

Kind of surprised Ellen Page is involved because she tends to be a really sensible person although she has a history of choosing bad projects.

While this sounds terrible, is it really worth getting offended by, especially when they are at least clearly trying to tell a story of empowerment?

Are people here that feel this way as outraged by comedies like The Interview, Death of Stalin, In Bruges, The Cable Guy and hell even Dr. Strangelove, that all take on as dark if not darker subject matters than this one?
