With their 4th quarter earnings release for FY2022 today, Konami have announced that the past year (April 2021 - March 2022) has been their most profitable in history, with an operating profit of ¥74.4B (+103.6% YoY) and a net profit of ¥54.8B (+69.9%). Full breakdown below from their provided materials:

EDIT: There appears to have been some confusion in the thread below; Digital Entertainment (their most profitable business) = video games. Pachinko falls under Amusement, and Gaming & Systems refers to their casino business.

It appears that the launch of Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel and the continued success of the newest Momotaro Dentetsu title on Switch in Japan (their best selling game in Japan ever, at over 3.5m units) were the two heavy-hitters that made this year a success for them. It definitely wasn't those Castlevania NFTs, I can tell you that much.

Come on Konami, make games with all of those amazing yugioh monsters, that aren't card games.
The card game is fun and all, but ygo has such a rich universe to explore. So many archetypes can be integrated into different genres of games.

Maybe make a game based on the card game and motorcycles

Yknow what'd give them even higher profits?

Metal Gear Rising on PS5/XSX in 4k120fps.

Someone do that Morbius box office meme but with Raiden instead.

Thats why it is funny when people are like, "oh so and so should just buy Konami and release video games." Konami doesn't need to sell, and also video games aren't anywhere near their most profitable business.

This is for the best. I don't think current Konami can make serviceable games in this climate, so the fewer attempts, the better.

It makes what they have in the womb more concerning, though. PES has been all but destroyed, Contra's gone to hell, they've sent Getsu Fuma Den out to die. And y'all want a Bloober Team Silent Hill and a Castlevania game that badly when both series have had all of their core staff leave the company?

Honestly surprised every company did not switch to this model yet. AAA games are hell, high costs (and still skyrocketing), poor returns and you're getting flamed by angry gamers pretty much everywhere. Konami just has to deal with your standard "fuck Konami" every now and then, while making bank.

Best model, by far.

Uh, did you see the slides in OPs post? Digital Entertainment (video games) was like 90% of their total profit.

Just for the people at the back, again for emphasis - their video gaming division Digital Entertainment is by far their largest segment in sales and profit. The numbers are in the OP too...

Their baseball games (eg. mobile) are quite evergreen too.
Football took a big hit though lol

EDIT: Here are my previous posts on Konami on this item:

Let's talk the future of Konami

I was reading about the recent Castlevania news from Konami today, and I got to thinking: When was the last "Great" game that Konami made? On any platform? For better or worse, this company is sitting on top of a slew of valuable intellectual properties, that they for some reason or another...

Quantitative Perspectives on Acquisition Targets From An M&A Banker (5/4/2022)

Needless to say, acquisitions have been all the rage lately. Makes sense! They're pretty great! Lots to think about from a strategic point of view, possible new games, IP transfers, etc etc. But one thing I've noticed is the lack of quantitative analysis. Now, I don't blame folks, because...

One thing that has changed for them is that there's little talk these days about putting their hat into the integrated resorts business (thanks to coronavirus)

Members of ResetERA, I implore you to take one second to ask first then make assumptions/comments after. Do not read just the title, or one slide and jump to a conclusion then ask after the fact.

Anyway, with that out of the way, Casino and Pachinko would fall under "Amusements" and "Gaming & Systems" respectively.

Console/PC/mobile games fall under "Digital entertainment".

Now, look at the slides posted and check what it has.

I mean, Konami is making bank with video games, just not the kind that are highly popular on a video games enthusiats forum...

Sorry, I should have clarified. I meant the traditional ones that era is interested in, which makes Konami get brought up in acquisition threads. No one is saying Sony or Microsoft should buy Konami because of Yu-Gi-Oh.

Just to add to this. Konami doesn't actually own yugioh, they just have the license to make stuff about it.

Damn, all these profits and they are making barebone PES game :(
Get the Fucking FIFA license (the name alone will improve sales), invest in your next PES, get on your throne again.
or not.

I'm confused whether Era is rooting for them to be profitable without contributing to the gaming industry or not at this point...
We got both Extreme Corporation Lovers and people desperate to feel so more intelligent, cool and superior than these lowly gaming nerds, and sadly these two categories overlap a lot.

Console/PC/mobile games fall under "Digital entertainment".
The physical Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG also falls under this category and historically was a key contributor to revenue/profit, at least in Europe. Game was mad popular up until 2020, when COVID came and killed off the tournament scene. I'm guessing they're starting to bounce back now though.

Source: I used to work there.

Thank you for posting this so we can get all the salt

Master Duel and Momotaru are money printers. Wonder when they will release the next Momotaru considering the first is still selling.

Man I'd love a Goemon collection in the same vein as the arcade, Contra and Castlevania collections but don't feel like it's in the cards. There's like 4 more games on the nes and snes that play like Legend of the Mystical Ninja but they're all jp only officially. I have a tiny ray of hope since they translated Kid Dracula but not counting on it.

Doubt FIFA would ever help, especially if they charge so much for the name. Just having a good game will be enough

Remember kids, Momotaro Dentetsu is better than you, your sales estimates, and your opinions about Konami.

Do these kind of data ever account for inflation?

Nah earnings are almost always just given in nominal terms. Sometimes depending on the company, jurisdiction and maybe reporting requirements you might get some color on volumes or #units sold, and in earnings calls and the like might have some insight into how the firm is seeing cost pressures, but usually not more than that.

It would also be a bit presumptuous for say, Konami to report inflation adjusted earnings because there are a bajillion different flavors of inflation that can act as a benchmark to investors depending on where they are in the world, what their consumption basket looks like etc.

Keep rolling out godly Beatmania IIDX arcade versions and Infinitas updates and I'll remain a loyal cash cow.

If everyone switched to this model we'd have nothing to play.

Remember that Konami has switched to making mostly AA games and making great profit from them, especially on switch, they're out of the AAA business
