GameInformer have a detailed 10-page feature on Shenmue 3 in their latest issue. They talk to Yu Suzuki and give some very brief new details. It talks a little about a brief walk through a village in what Yu Suzuki describes as 40% into the game but there's not much more to it than that. It details a couple of NPC encounters which sound great and it talks about the combat a lot. It's more of a feature on the development of Shenmue 3 and Yu Suzuki's history.

They also have a 101 rapid fire Q&A with Yu Suzuki going up this Friday.

The digital copy of the magazine featured some images that haven't been seen before. Including one that is clearly labelled DLC and seems pretty spoilerish. See them below:

WARNING - POSSIBLE DLC SPOILERS AHEAD

The reason the last three images are potential DLC is because the filename on the casino style image is labelled DLC. Yu Suzuki said recently that DLC will include a casino, story DLC and battle DLC. The latter images have a filename of Story Quest Pack.

It's looking great! Following the recent demo I'm excited for the full game. Bonus Yu Suzuki photos:

I don't want to spoil the Yu Suzuki interview in the magazine but it's a very good read. The way he talks about Shenmue 3 and how it's all about the details is great. It seems Gameinformer had access to a different build that isn't the demo and is possibly the full game. They mention some really fun and awesome NPC encounters in different areas of the game that sound like it really brings the game to life.

If that is a new look for Niao Sun, then I'll say it is a nice design. I would definitely have preferred the original though. A minor gripe but one nonetheless. It also means they probably only worked on her/her new design from mid-late 2017 on, since they had previously dumped her model in the background of the Gamescom 2017 trailer.

Obviously it's the definition of 'clear', but still obviously Niao Sun in her original incarnation.

After playing the demo in which is from an old build I can say this game is going to surprise people. It's crazy how much this game looks better every time.

That character in red is the villain we had seen before in the promotional material from Shenmue 2, right? It looks somewhat different now, but the face still looks a bit similar.

The only time we ever saw Niao Sun outside of various promotional art was with this video:

She has always been the most interesting aspect of Shenmue III to me. It feels like she is meant to take on an especially major role. I cannot wait to see what happens with her.

I really wonder how Lan Di's relationship with Niao Sun will be

This game is going to be something special. I can feel it. All these years of waiting will be absolutely worth it. Love Niao's new look and I agree, it has that AM2 look going on, which is fantastic.
After playing the demo, I just can't wait for the full game.

Got to be honest, if that is Niao Sun then I feel the new design, while not bad in itself, is a step down from the Dreamcast era design.

Still really excited for her appearance and role in the story.

Niao Sun looks great! I'm so excited to see her personality!

It's interesting that Zhang from Shenmue 2 is in the DLC screenshots. I definitely want to learn more about Yuanda Zhu.

The article also confirms an arcade game that some expected from previous images:

"a parody of Virtua Fighter staring cutesy birds, called Chobu-chan"
I don't want to spoil the article but the brief bits they discuss about the game sound so good. Definitely an emphasis on NPC's and the details in this game. One bit really made me laugh:
"Ryo peeks through the windows of a nearby apartment building and catches a man flexing in the mirror. Suzuki tells us that this character is actually modelled after a Kickstarter backer."

Incredible screens, can't believe how much this game has come together in the last few months.

The trial was great, and everything else we've been shown gives me no reason to doubt the full release.

I call it honest game development with shenmue 3. Each and every time we saw the game is got better unlike many games we see that end up getting downgraded or deceived.

Visually, I mean... it's great. It strikes the eye like Shenmue, but it also looks rather impressive.

This whole thing is really coming together and better than I could have imagined.

I hope these are genuine screenshots and not touched up... The atmospheric lighting looks much improved over the demo here. If the final product looks this nice I will be super happy.

Also, hope the game has at least one city environments. Won't quite feel like Shenmue otherwise!

It's kind of amazing how much the tone of discourse surrounding this game has changed since TGS. Prob. the first Kickstarter I've seen go from pure negativity to pure joy. Obviously the people who don't 'get' Shenmue are probably still laughing at the state of the game, but the fans sure seem thrilled.

Another cool thing about the article besides the funny and great Yu Suzuki moments is that the GameInformer guys are really high on the combat. They talk about a tournament within the game and end the combat discussion with "we walk away from our demo feeling better knowing that Shenmue's action has never felt better"

Seeing how great Lan Di, Niao Sun and Ren look as characters and how gorgeous the environments are, I'm stunned that the artists at YS Net and marketing at Deep Silver landed on the current box art with just Ryo and Shenhua in the cave (we're out of the cave at the start of the game, so why?). It's so drab compared to the visual quality of what we're seeing in these renders, and the only thing out of all of this that I'm actually quite disappointed by. They could have done so much better, and it seems the box art hasn't evolved like the game itself has.

Ryo looks really good there. Would be surprised if the game ends up looking way better at release.

It's not "honest" game development, whatever that means. It's:
- the game having literal decades in the oven. Creatively. Suzuki's on paper designs/plans were probably tight asf to begin with and he likely only improved the planning/concepting over time

- the game being third in a series. They knew the general mechanics, the design philosophy/strategy, and the pitfalls. So they could dodge all the biggest risks of new IPs and untested teams immediately. Unlike most Kickstarters etc, where game design challenges and risks only appear at the last hurdle and SUDDENLY you have to pivot and "downgrade" unexpectedly

- good project management. This guy isnt some untested indie or monolithic studio trying to push the envelope of realism - he's an experienced '90s dev paying homage to that era - one that is used to working at a very high level with high publisher stakes and stakeholder interest. The planning and project management behind everything he does will be meticulous

They still had to start from scratch with a new engine. Getting everything so precise and true is honestly impressive as fuck and very few can do that. This honestly has proven Yu Suzuki as a man with vision. The design decisions seem very thought out and deliberate. Seeing a game 20 years later with still that essence literally everywhere in the game has really proven what a legend the man is to me. SEGA losing all these great guys is what has got them where they are
