Koelnmesse announced the nominations for Gamescom Awards, named by a "jury consisting of German and international games journalists, as well as well-known YouTubers and Co."

All pretty expected, even if there are some standout nominations, i.e. Life is Strange 2 as Best Casual Game???

And what's that Project Mephisto nominated for "Best Console Game Sony PlayStation 4"?

Best Family Game -> Life is strange 2 wut?

Maybe my definition of family game is something else.

Also all we saw from it was a teaser and it's nominated for 3 awards.

I'm kind of out of the loop on this. Serious question, what's the rationale behind giving awards to games that aren't released?

And a game like Smash Bros. Ultimate is still four months away. That's my point. How can an unreleased game win an award for being the best anything?

EDIT:

WAIT, MY BAD. Had a brain fart and forgot Gamescom is a trade show. For some reason I thought it was just an awards presentation like DICE.

Well usually this kind of awards, like the E3 ones, are on games still to be released, which journalists could see (or play, lilke for E3) at the event. The problem here is Gamescom still didn't happen and they already have a bunch of nominations. I doubt they've done a pre-event showcase to let journalists see the games, like they usually do at E3.

Project Mephisto!? Only thing I can think of is Diablo, but then it would be under PC.
Also, how are game on console awards determined? Strange to have multiplats on one and not the other.

Project Mephisto is pretty interesting especially being top 3 action games on ps4. Hopefully it's revealed since this only requires the game being showed behind doors to judges and not for public, right?

Smash got the shaft a bit. It's strategic, family friendly, an esport, casual, skill-based and full of action. Conveniently not listed in any of those categories.
