Notes:
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to be the biggest retail game of the year by far based on preorders.
  • Black Ops 4 is doing incredibly well, which GameStop thinks is due to the Battle Royale mode.
  • Switch sales doubled over the course of the week after Nintendo's E3 showing, with Pokémon and especially Smash Bros seeing huge interest. There's also lots of demand for the Pokeball controller.
  • GameStop expects the shift toward September/October instead of November releases to continue into the future because most publishers wanted to do it to enable deeper discounts on Black Friday, as opposed to just trying to dodge Red Dead.
  • GameStop is positive on Games as a Service because their digital currency business is booming and is now over $1 billion a year. Multiplayer games also drive lots of controller and headset sales.
  • GameStop expects we will see more game releases in the April through August window in the future due to how well games are doing outside traditional windows, but that it might take a few years for development schedules to match up with that due to how long games take to make.

Another reason to look at the reception of a Call of Duty game on Era, and then bet on the exact opposite.

I'm not sure what's sadder, people paying $50 for a half assed controller that gets you mew, or that I'm not surprised.

Switch news is interesting. So the week after and not the week of E3? Wonder how much of that is Fortnite.

You can go buy $50 worth of PSN or XBL money from them.

I assume you can buy eShop money too, but I haven't been in a GameStop in like a decade or so.

I believe you can also buy Steam Wallet funds from that as well.
Even though they make a billion a year of revenue I doubt it's a very high profit part of their business (though I'm not sure, I've never seen how much they make on those cards).

With some of the most well known characters in the world like Mario, Pikachu, Link, etc.

Assuming he's from the US, Smash Bros is practically a cultural icon here.

Smash Bros Brawl did 2 Million+ in its debut NPD(in March btw).

Smash Bros 3ds did 900k+ in a weekend.

Smash Bros Ultimate is going to probably have the biggest debut for an exclusive out of the current three consoles so far until maybe Pokémon Gen 8 or Last of Us 2

Lol Red Dead has the most pre-orders, wasn't even at E3 and Rockstar haven't shown any real gameplay.

At the end of the day these are still preorders from GameStop which won't really tell us everything about how the game will do.

But people knowing about a gaming IP and buying a console for it means they are gamers, no? It is not like Pokémon where there are plenty of other ways for people to know about it, anyways it's not a big deal.

I'd just give up. Sony's showcase, MS Showcase, Nintendo too all pretty good. Yet RDR2 is going to shit down each of their throats without even showing gameplay yet. It's not even a fair fight.

Geez red dead is going to be massive. Can only imagine how big GTAVI will be. Rockstar really are in a fantastic place right now.

Good to hear about the switch as well.

I wonder if this means Switch topped NPD charts for June.

Happy to see Smash and Pokemon trending so strongly. Surprised to see Spider-Man not mentioned.

Call of duty mover out of RDR2s way. I'd expect other major outlets to have similar pre-order splits. And R* hasn't even shown gameplay. Just wait until they give a blowout on what you can do in the game, the story, and the online.

No surprise here. It'll be big.

Well, the gentleman in question certainly knows how to sound bullishly confident about GameStop's future prospects. I suppose that's the second most important thing their execs need to achieve lately -- right after actually restructuring their business model to survive the next decade.

I don't get why people would doubt the launch of RDR2.

I could get doubting the legs if you expect the game to suck, the same way Fallout 4 launched at 12 million copies on day one (up from 7 million week 1 for Skyrim), but seemingly ended lower than Skyrim by a fair margin, but the launch is going to have a ton of good will based on RDR1 and GTAV, and there are not so many red flags as to make people question their preorder.

I don't think anyone is really doubting the game will be big, it's just some people think that it will be the end of everything, blow everything out when the first game sold 15 million which is a huge number for sure but not what people make it sound like, remains to be seen how this will do.

Speaking of the Skyrim/Fallout 4 discrepancy, I noticed you said "seemingly" but I'll still ask: what do we know about Fallout 4's lifetime sales achievement? I've wondered about this for some time but whenever I remember to look it up I'm on my mobile, lol.

There was early worries about God of War pre-order numbers and then it broke a bunch of sale records on release. I'm sure Spider-Man will be fine.
God of War's early sales surged on the back of its overwhelmingly positive reviews. Spidey, of course, could replicate that too, but it's not a direct comparison.

"Wow! The new Pokemon game has a controller that is an actual Pokeball! And it works with Pokemon Go as well? That's amazing!"

"But actually it's not a good value so I don't know why you're so excited for it."

Like, I can understand not wanting the controller (I definitely don't), but people buying it aren't doing so for the reasons us "hardcore" gamers would buy a controller.

Eh, Spider-Man doesn't really need worrying, it's a big budget game backed by Sony, chances are very slim that it will do bad.
