But I thought for next gen games 10GB was enough and possibly too much?
(lol)

16GB VRAM is great but given what the price is likely to be over the FE, wouldn't it still make sense to go with a 3080 for the extra performance? Guess we won't know until proper specs are released, but still, interesting.

When is this likely to launch? First few months of 2021?

I'm very new to pc gaming so don't quite understand how it has worked with previous generations of graphics cards.

That vram is juicy, 3080 only having 10 looks weird now
That was one of the reasons I was considering a 3090, 24 is huge

Usually the base models (60, 70, 80) launch on the release year, then the following year we get the Ti's (70 Ti, 80 Ti, maybe 60 Ti).

RTX 20 series has been an exception to this as they launched the 80 Ti immediately and introduced silly "Super" models the following year, but this gen seems like they're going back to their old ways.

The perf gap will still be big between a full GA104 3070 Ti (6144 cores), if they indeed still use GA104 like rumored, and 3080 (8704 cores)
Buying a $600 (?) 16GB 3070 Ti over a $700 10GB 3080 wouldn't make sense to me for example

And 3080 is gonna have a 20GB variant anyway

Yeah that one guy in the other threads keep defending 10GB while 10GB was in the 1080 Ti THREE years ago...its def not enough for next gen.

Doesn't that really depends on the resolution you will play at? At 1440p or 4k with dlss I understood 8 gig will get you through next gen just fine. At native 4k it may be another Story.

Wait, so the 3080 is not enough for next gen? This card is a bad deal now? I guess I will hold on to my 2070 super until the TI cards come out then.

This could just be one of those obscure OEM-only cards like the 760 Ti, only available with certain pre-built computers.

Kopite did mention another variant of the GA104 that would use the full chip. It would also use GDDR6X memory instead. He expected it to be the 3070Ti.

Yeah, the trade off isn't making much sense in my head.

Damn and everybody has been out here singing the praises of the 3080 specs and price. That's what happens when hype gets to people I guess.

I mean, even the person you quoted doesn't seem to be particularly consistent about this, so I'm not sure why you're so eager to believe them at face value either. First it's "def not enough for next gen", then it's "def not enough if you like [high resolution textures mods]", which is def not the same as next gen, all based on... The fact that an older card exists with 10GB VRAM? There's some weird petty shit going between some posters it seems, I'd take anything they say with a grain of salt lol

So I would indeed just stay cool and wait for benchmarks.

The 1080Ti had 11 GB GDDR5X

The GDDR6X have like 2x bandwidth..

Edit:
Changed 12GB to 11GB for the 1080Ti

I'm not eager to believe them. I'm trying to pin down the truth because I built a new rig in April out of necessity and put in a 2070 super as a placeholder. I'd like to sell it before the 3080 comes out so I don't have to pay as big of a difference, but if the 3080 is lacking I'll just hold off til the TI cards drop.

I'm not sure about this. A 16GB 3070 by itself would probably command an extra $100 premium, so even a relatively minor 'Ti' spec bump on top of that is going to put it directly in the 3080's price range. I know people some people are (VRAM) size queens, but I think the performance gap between two products at a similar price would be too stark to ignore, 16GB or no.

Fair enough. I would imagine the 2000 series GPUs' resell value has already plummeted with the announcements yesterday and they won't be going down that much anymore, so surely you'd be safe waiting for 3080 benchmarks.

Cool, I'll just do that then. Worst case I'll just buy one outright and use the 2070 in a new rig for my spouse (she's on an i3 gtx760 machine still yikes!)
I'm not super knowledgeable on GPU tech, so it's honestly hard to tell the difference between people on era who know their stuff, and bad faith arguments rooted in console wars BS.

Yeh it's really tiring how people just seem to ignore this. Everyone just assumes everyone will be playing at native 4k for some reason.

May be worth waiting. Im only issue with the 3070 is the 8GB of Vram which seems small compared to the next gen consoles.

This'll be the one i'll be looking at. If they only did this with 3080 and had a price under 1K - I'd be very interested.
