cocaine is really bad for you and i absolutely don't recommend doing it but it's pretty widely used, and doesn't have anywhere near the body count of much more dangerous drugs like opiates.
Even for very dangerous drugs, this kind of public erasure and draconian punishment does more harm than it helps -- do you think somebody addicted to heroin, which they already cant stop even though it is killing them and ruining their life, is going to stop just cause they saw a celebrity go to jail? They're only going to take more steps to hide their addiction, which significantly increases the danger.
Punishments like this -- here in the us, as in japan -- are about cleaning up the appearance of the culture, and shoving the "undesirables" deeper into the shadows. They aren't about helping anybody.
