Something random I was wondering: if this is indeed the Japanese playbook for dealing with drug-related scandals, is it possible there's insurance for this kind of thing? It seems weird that companies operating in Japan are at constant risk of taking a sudden significant financial loss because someone associated with a piece of media they own gets arrested for drug use.

US drug laws are fucked up but not for the same reasons as Japanese ones. Ours have more to do with oppressing minorities and the poor. You can do all the drugs you want in certain segments of our society. The richer and whiter you are the less consequences.
That said, my issue isn't as much with the backwards draconian laws so much as the quite literal deletion of a person from society. That's scary.

Yeah... I can't speak for all of Japan, and I wasn't in a major metropolitan city (there wasn't a major city within a two hour drive from where I lived, I was absolutely living the inaka life) or anything, but I worked at seven different schools in Japan and well over half of the people I worked with had, what I would refer to as, an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
That sounds crazy.
I would have thought a company like Sega would just make a statement like "That does not reflect our values" and maybe remove him from credits.

So we have 3 pages+ of comments referring to CP and how lax Japan can be around criminalizing it. For me, not really a whataboutism here as it's a valid way to show just how dysfunctional priorities are treating personal drug use more severe than a genuinely severe and disgusting crime.
But only one person gets banned for referring to the frustration between personal drug use being treated as a severe crime (rather than a victim and rehab), but often many examples of CP from Japan being a slap on the wrist. Or worse, still celebrated via all of the anime, manga and games that come out that see no crackdown.
En masse is inflammatory? Well, if we go into any topic on Era about visual novels needing to be pulled from Steam, or the vast array of topics on problematic anime, you will certainly see members commenting on the volume of content coming out of Japan across multiple mediums overly sexualizing children. People have been frustrated with it for decades.

I remember reading this article about this Hong Kong actor who had his career pretty much ruined after nude photos of him leaked online. I dunno, seems sex is big there too.
And I mean Jennifer Lawrence is still doing great in Hollywood despite her nude photo leak.
Is this really the way Japanese companies handle those things? Like one person could bring down a whole company. What if a key developer at Nintendo does drugs? All Mario/Pokemon game sales on hold? Seems alien for me from a business perspective and super unfair to the rest of the company. You can't control every single employee/partner.

What happened was Edison Chen had to basically lay low for years because he sent his laptop for repair and it contained a ton of photos and videos of him having sex with other famous actresses in HK. They were the victims of his carelessness. The actresses who got exposed were like Jennifer Lawrence - nothing happened to their careers mostly, and they continued on. Edison excused himself and left the industry and country because his stupidity caused his friends, ex-lovers, and fellow colleagues great embarrassment and trouble.
It's the normal course of action when high profile people who makes regular media appearance like actors and musicians are involved.
If it's just regular employee then something like this doesn't happen very often (unless there's mass news coverage for whatever reason).
Once you get that game it's kind of a VA's in it, especially one who served as a face template too. Not so much with basically every artist or programmer, or even composer - you may have their trademark tendencies but to make sure you really need to check the credits.
Just recoup your loss by releasing it in the US. We don't give a fuck about our celebs using cocaine.

Lots are still locked up on ridiculous drug charges in America, especially POC. Weed going legal in many places and there is still folks serving lengthy sentences due to weed.
Most will accept there are often victims in the creation of drugs like cocaine, such as where it's produced (slave ownership/cartels/etc), the smuggling and the crime ring(s) doing the dealing at the endpoints. However, most also accept those addicted or using personally are better helped with rehabilitation and therapy, not jailed or removed from society as if they're the literal mafia/crime syndicate.

Even for very dangerous drugs, this kind of public erasure and draconian punishment does more harm than it helps -- do you think somebody addicted to heroin, which they already cant stop even though it is killing them and ruining their life, is going to stop just cause they saw a celebrity go to jail? They're only going to take more steps to hide their addiction, which significantly increases the danger.
Punishments like this -- here in the us, as in japan -- are about cleaning up the appearance of the culture, and shoving the "undesirables" deeper into the shadows. They aren't about helping anybody.

Japan's public excommunication of drug users makes US drug laws seem tame by comparison. Here, we know that everyone's high as shit and the majority of arrests are done to feed the industrial prison complex. In Japan, there seems to be an element of moral shaming involved.

Except in my experience the public in Asian countries are very much in favour of very, very harsh drug laws. In Singapore for example the general attitude is "using drugs? lock em up". Asian cultures are actually very, very conservative. Sex and drugs are big no-no's.
We still hang people for drug trafficking (when you traffick more than a certain amount of drugs, weight differs for different drugs). I believe we cane them too for those who don't traffick enough to get the death penalty. Honestly it's barbaric but most Singaporeans don't seem to have a problem with it because they think it won't happen to them.
Schools drill this into us by the time we are 10 or so. Drugs=jail, cane or death.
