Peru and Panama both started on Thursday limiting the times men and women can leave their homes in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Amid a strict quarantine in Peru, President Martin Vizcarra said on Thursday that men and women will only be allowed to leave their homes on designated days divided by gender.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only men will be able to leave their homes to stock up. Women can go out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Nobody will be allowed to leave home on Sunday.

"We have to get fewer people to be on the streets every day," Vizcarra said in a virtual news conference with his cabinet of ministers and experts.

Vizcarra said it was easier for security forces to monitor the circulation of men and women to enforce the quarantine order, rather than using serial numbers of identity documents to divide up days, which some other countries have done.

He said the new measure, which will be in place until April 12, would not impact people who have an emergency or are authorized to work during the quarantine, such as those in essential food production, pharmacies and banks

What countries are doing this? It does sound simpler though.

Here in Costa Rica, last number of your car plate.

It comes down to simplicity. Trying to use an overly complicated wa of keeping people in would lead to miscommunication and confusion.

When I first heard about this I was like wtf that is stupid, then it hit me that this is better than what we did with gas after sandy and only allowed even and odd number license plates on certain days.

this is a great idea

I hope trans have their gender respected.

But non-binary are in a weird spot.

It's like enforcing the car plate number for the car.

One day only odd, one day only even.

I don't see why is sexist.

Peruvian's president has also said that the goverment will be inclusive and that homophobic acts won't be permitted.

What if a son needs to go out with his mother because she doesn't or can't go drive or walk well and needs help. Does she then go out with only her female friends who are also the same age with the same problems?

Numbers on your document would be fine. But imagine being called out because you don't look like your gender.

I can see the your point.
But this is simple and require no close contact the normal option would require and much faster.

Plus imagine if they don't have an national id? I'm pretty sure that is not issue with a sane country, but who know.

Wow this kinda was genius.

Yep, it def can be problematic if this isn't respected.

it's not a perfect solution, but it significantly helps out in limiting how many get out/day

Yeah I totally understand. Need to reduce people on street ASAP

I currently live in Panama and IIRC, they number they floated around in the news today is that it helped reducing traffic in 35%. Bear in mind, the way the number of cases were piling up in this 4 million country was starting to speed up. It helps that we're doing a LOT of testing so at least the numbers are more reliable than say (no disrespect) a country like Nicaragua which is barely doing any testing at all.

They were actually considering reducing the Quarantine to only be able to go out once a week for groceries and essentials so this feels kinda like a stop gap.

Nica living in the US here, no disrespect taken, the Ortega administration deserves every bit of criticism it gets for its pathetic response to this pandemic (not to mention everything else from the last few years)

I hope trans have their gender respected.

I am also worried about this, but I still think it's overall a good idea and a better idea than doing it based on ID/license plate numbers or something else like that. I just hope that individuals aren't targeted for "looking like the wrong gender", and that cops/government officials gauge the responses of communities instead of harassing individuals based on how they look.

I honestly don't like this idea at all. It rubs me the wrong way.

Reducing the amount of people that are moving about by 50% and thus significantly reducing the spread of Covid19 v not doing it 'cus it rubs someone the wrong way.

welcome, nowhere
Seems like an easy way to cut down on the people on the street. I don't find it particularly sexist, but it is discriminating the sexes although they're both equal.

I was recently wondering why couples go to the grocery store right now when just one of them can go. Then some are even taking the kids. The kids may be mostly be immune to this, but they spread that shit.

Unfortunately too many dipshits have been breaking curfew here in Peru despite so many of them getting arrested, and in Panama as well. We were making progress but in the last few days the number of cases has been increasing considerably. By the end of next week it will be one month of this lockdown and honestly I can't deal with this shit anymore. I hope this works and they start easing these restrictions.

What if a son needs to go out with his mother because she doesn't or can't go drive or walk well and needs help. Does she then go out with only her female friends who are also the same age with the same problems?
The answer is obvious, the son will have to go out alone to buy groceries or medication.

And people can't drive here anymore unless you provide an essential service.

As has been pointed out, there need to be provisions for enbies and non-passing trans people, otherwise this is discriminatory.

Is it just because it's easier/immediate and somewhat enforceable compared to a lottery? It's actually in some ways brilliant in it's simplicity.

A girl was walking her dog this morning, I guess she didn't give a single fuck.

No female shoppers at the grocery store though.

This is no longer the case in Peru because there were way more women going to buy groceries in their days than men in theirs.
