George H.W. Bush accused of groping by two women

Didn't think my first political Era thread would be about a different president.

Deadspin said:
Earlier this week, actress Heather Lind said in a now-deleted Instagram postthat former president George H.W. Bush had sexually assaulted her. “He touched me from behind from his wheelchair with his wife Barbara Bush by his side,” she wrote. “He told me a dirty joke. And then, all the while being photographed, touched me again.”

That is not the end of things. Jordana Grolnick, a New York actress, has a story to tell that doesn’t sound very different at all. “I got sent the Heather Lind story by many people this morning,” Grolnick says. “And I’m afraid that mine is entirely similar.”

Rumors about Bush groping actresses in this manner have been circulating for a while. More than a year ago, a tipster passed word about the Heather Lind incident to Deadspin. We were told that Bush had, during a photo opp, groped her and told her that his favorite magician was “David Cop-a-Feel” while fondling her.

(Reached for comment, Bush spokesperson Jim McGrath provided the following statement: “At age 93, President Bush has been confined to a wheelchair for roughly five years, so his arm falls on the lower waist of people with whom he takes pictures. To try to put people at ease, the president routinely tells the same joke — and on occasion, he has patted women’s rears in what he intended to be a good-natured manner. Some have seen it as innocent; others clearly view it as inappropriate. To anyone he has offended, President Bush apologizes most sincerely.”)

In reporting out the tip, I found two actresses—Lind and Grolnick—who had accused Bush of groping, and also two Twitter users who, on April 4, 2014, made reference to the “David Cop-a-Feel” joke. (At the time, these people either didn’t respond to Deadspin’s requests for comment, or could not be reached.) Today, in the wake of the Lind story, I tried again, and Grolnick wanted to tell her story.

"good-natured manner"

What on earth? He must be completely senile at this point. Not that I'm saying this excuses anything, nobody should get a free pass, regardless of age or medical condition. I'm just baffled at the wording here.

Disgusting. I wonder what he was doing before he was confined to a wheel chair.

Sexual harassment is horrible, but something about crucifying Bush sr at this stage in life bothers me a little.
I don't know his history with the touching but I think at this point he gives no damn.

Dudes near dead. He’ll never apologize, he won’t learn from this and won’t ever acknowledge anyone else’s feelings on this. He was probably doing some even nastier shit while he was in the CIA or when he hit his first million in oil. I’m not saying forgive the man, but there are bigger targets out there worth the fury. A dying old man puttering around in a wheelchair? Nah.

Nobody's looking to crucify him, but it doesn't matter how old you are. He's clearly still with it enough to know what he's doing and that PR statement is bullshit.

The "David Cop-A-Feel" really doesn't help his case. Like, I get the whole wheelchair thing, but I can't say that that "joke" is going to be "putting anyone at ease."

I'm so used to joke threads from The GAF Meltdown that I thought this was fake for a second.

At 93...I dunno, dude is probably barely there....Although he can apparently crack a joke. His brain probably has this as a standard greeting lol.

I like to think that when I reach my 90s, I'll still have enough mental faculties to undergo the terribly difficult task of respecting women.

I agree with this. Not meaning to excuse reprehensible behavior, and I don't believe in "boys will be boys" crap but I'm inclined to believe, at his age, he probably thought it was an obvious joke that clearly didn't sit well with everyone.

We associate that behavior with old people but it's less about getting old and more about the times they grew up in.
In part yeah. Another big part is at 93, the vast majority of people will have mentation that's a shadow of their former self.

That is pretty fucking terrible. Has anyone in the past accused Bush Sr of this kind of behavior? I'm curious if he is a long time serial harasser, or if this is recent behavior at his age. Not that it justifies his behavior, but I have definitely seen elderly men think they can get away with this kind shit because of their age. Though if he was willing to do something like this now it would not be unlikely that he would be willing to do something like this when he was younger.

Terrible for the women involved and I can imagine how awful it must make a person feel emotionally to be touched by a former President in that situation. At the same time, Bush Sr. has been in pretty poor health for quite some time. He doesn't seem to have all his mental faculties and is probably living in the "olden days" in his mind. We shouldn't let this stuff slide. He issued a sincere apology, though, which is more than some folks are capable of.

I guess I read the guy you quoted as saying he's currently "with it" enough to know what he did was wrong.
I'm just saying that we shouldn't excuse anyone from their wrongdoings because of age. I don't know if he's "with it" or not.. but guys of all ages and statuses do this kinda stuff regularly.

Does he also pat men's rears in a good natured manner? I'm guessing no.

I'm leaning on senility here. Dude is 93 with health that has been failing for years. I imagine he's not quite in his right mind. Not that that excuses it.
