It's cool that she takes it good, and her presentation was cool..

.. but is turning to be kind of creepy. That she's ok with it doesn't mean it can't be creepy. (and also find it creepy doesn't mean anything more than the opinion of a person, but I'm already saying some "outrage culture!!!"posts, nope, it's just an opinion).

I consider myself a progressive but man it can be sometimes so egregiously tiresome to be in the know about all of these things all the time tbh.
Imagine how tiresome it is to go through it often enough to notice it being a thing and then hearing that you're not alone and that a lot of POC go through similar things. 😃 Hell we can even reduce it down to gaming specifically. Imagine how many quarters I would have if I received one every single time I received a "wait, you're black" in response to that knowledge in an MP game due to "being well spoken" and "well you don't sound black." 😃

Nakamura out there enjoying her success on stage and y'all are out here wringing hands about "Asian Fetishisation"

It's fine, she's in a position where if she had issues she could vocalize them and get tons of support.
Also, congrats to the internet for falling for smart marketing

Yeah this won't end well at all. But she was awesome, her enthusiasm and candor was great. I wish more devs were like that during these conferences.

Bro it's not like she was the only person that people went head over heels over. People have been doing nothing but noting her and Keanu Reeves as being the most wholesome parts of E3 because guess what? People like it when likable charismatic people do endearing presentations and will react well to it. Nakamura's popularity has more to do with that then just her being a cute Asian woman even if it is a part of it

I mean, she is cute. The fanart (posted) is respectable and she seems to be happy with it. People can idolize others if they so wish

He is more of a meme, and treated as such. Fan art of him is basically:

Silly stuff.

Here, and please someone correct me if I'm wrong, the appreciation for Nakamura is based solely on her appearance and mannerism. So I guess a textbook case of sexual objectification?

It's different from others excited devs like the jumping Peggle 2 guy, where their actions became memes.

The most standard meme created based on her was that Loss meme posted above.

The rest is weird, like that time when some of the Nintendo Treehouse members attracted that same attention.

When someone does 3/4 of a jumping jack yelling 'Mite neee!!' instead of standing, gesturing to the screen and saying 'Mite, kudasai.'

You know they are making an attempt to appear funny or charming or cute.
A lot of people yelling “creepy” didn’t even watch her presentation to get the context.

The only person who has ever objectified Reggie is Vinny from Giant Bomb

I have to say though, when I see the fanart I like it a lot. Maybe I'm just projecting but too much spamming the pictures during the mite nee and stuff would've made me cringe over myself if I was on that receiving end. Nobody likes watching themselves when they were nervous.

Are you telling me that the gaming community has a major issue with asian fetishisim?
Probably is true but is beside the issue.

But I see it as no different as fans celebrating or having fun with figures in the industry like Reggie, that guy at Bamco, Iwata (RIP), Sakurai, Kas, or Cerny.

Some of you on this site want to turn the most innocuous shit into a smear campaign. The lady herself is retweeting it so what is the problem here?

Yeah this is weird, and likely to turn creepy quick-fast.
That was obvious the moment she walked on stage.

The particular posts in the OP are pretty harmless though and she clearly likes them. Nothing wrong on its own with fanart.

At the same time it kind of sucks that we have someone with a pretty strong record of making great horror games finally getting serious recognition and the torch passed onto her and all people are talking about is how "cute" she is.

Is there any Tak Fuji fan art?
Whilst there's certainly a pervy element I'd like to think most of the support's coming from her having a similar performance to Tak. The "spooky" bit certainly hit me as though it was something he'd do during the GOTA Konami conference. Also at one point she bust out a manji pose on a huge E3 stage to show her enthusiasm, it was pretty cute/funny thing to do.

I love her energy and I support female directors, but I don’t think infantilizing them is the way to do it. I choose to take her seriously as a working professional.

HOLY.FUCK. Yea, that whole essentially "Oh you are one of the good ones" is perhaps most condescending backhanded compliment a non-white person can receive. I think what is even more aggravating is when some folks, who are not generally bigoted, say this, oblivious to the place of origin for such sentiment- Stereotypes. Some of these are deeply ingrained within society.

Weird point to make when this happened the same day as Keanu Reaves.
If that poster made a post calling him wholesome i'd love to see it. 😃 Funny enough, there's only TWO instances of the word wholesome in the Microsoft e3 thread, one directed at Keanu, another disparagingly about the Halo cinematic, frankly, the post describing her as wholesome in the bethesda thread genuinely couldn't be more perfect at describing what it looks like:

Just tune in and was greeted my some super wholesome Japanese woman. A pretty nice surprise. Interested in the game too.

Yea exactly.

It's fine when she's clearly looking for this kind of attention on stage, and appreciating it through twitter. No doubt some will take it too far, but nothing wrong with anything above. It's also no more creepy than the love we show some male devs like Todd Howard =P

I'm glad she's getting the spotlight, and I hope her game does well to boost her even more. Female devs need some spotlight.

Her enthusiasm seemed very genuine, that's always heartwarming at marketing events like E3 where we mostly see bland PR speeches.

I could see this going creepy real fucking fast, but it's always refreshing to see someone genuinely enthusiastic about presenting a project when so many of these conferences can feel very corporate or super edgy/cringy. I still think one of my favorite E3 moments was the initial reveal of Unraveled; you could tell the dev was very emotional and heartfelt about that project, and it was super endearing.
