Thinkin bout how making numbers go up has somehow managed to become one of the most difficult and complicated design challenges in gaming, one which several of the world's development houses have failed to get right

Absolutely everybody is using Youtube, there is not a single somewhat viable competitor. The only people who might be able to hurt Youtube by switching from it are part of the problem and the rest are not influential enough to survive without it or change it. And Youtube will never, ever change because they know that.
The reality is, 8chan is a fart in the wind compared to what Youtube does.

You're right that youtube (and other social media) are the real problem. They need to be moderated but unless they are legally required to by law it'll never happen.
