I feel like people that call it pretentious are just leaning on a really easy/cheap shorthand for actual proper criticism and are too lazy to actually pick it apart. I don't feel it's that pretentious at all, but I do not really care for anything it's doing thematically or even its character writing. The only character I liked was Misato and they ruin that character in End of Eva, too, so I kinda just don't care for anything they do character wise. I said it before but I like broken characters and shows about broken people but nothing about the cast had anything for me. I think it might be some of the anime-trope trappings around it that turn me off and the real life stuff juxtaposed with the insane unreality of what they are dealing with. Honestly found it profoundly boring on that front and then thematically the way it handles depression via Shinji is... annoying? Like I legitimately hate it.

i like evangelion because even though its a little bit of a selfish work, i identify with the specific kind of working through depression and coming to grips with finding meaning and hope in what is ultimately kind of a grim life it presents. so its a selfish work i can put into the perspective of my own self
