Damn, just heard about all of this. Now i understand why some girls only made one video there and never appeared somewhere else.

A US judge has awarded $12.8m (£9.8m) to 22 unnamed women, ruling that they were tricked into appearing in widely distributed online porn videos.
Holy shit that is fucked up, they had their lives ruined. While nearly $13m seems like a big settlement spread across 22 women that's a little over $500,000 each which probably isn't enough to make up for their ruined job prospects in the future, plus there is probably more victims that didn't come forward due to shame. So fucked up man!

Didn't the owner flee the country? I hope the women end up getting the damages but I wouldn't count on it.

can easily be revenge porn uploaded without the consent of one (or both) people involved, or the product of an abusive relationship

if the biggest porn site online dgaf about taking that kind of shit down on request, then i highly doubt others do
yeah i can see a lot of those homemade vids being "babe im just recording it for my own private use/to use when you're away" and then uploads it.

its really fucked up what happened to them, but seems so weird to me that people are saying things like "their lives are ruined!"

just because they starred in porn?.

why should that be a fucking issue?!! she fucked someone, god forbids!

in a better society they starring in porn wouldnt be an issue, in a even better society this shouldn;t have happened at all.

Get out of here with this bullshit, especially when the victims didn't know that they would have the videos widely distributed. Here is one example below of how it can fuck someone's life.

https://www.dailydot.com/irl/alyssa-funke-casting-couch-porn-suicide/

"Case in point: the sad story of Alyssa Funke, a 19-year-old girl who was taunted on Facebook and Twitter after a video of her surfaced on the amateur porn site CastingCouch-X. The online harassment might have prompted her to take her own life."

The article goes on to say that maybe it wasn't the harassment that killed her but when you get harassed and then commit suicide I think that harassment has something to do with it.

It's all in the article. Broken relationships, harassment, ridicule, lost job opportunities.

We don't live in that kind of society. Harassment is a very real thing and girls have taken their own lives because of it as Jamiem posted.

... because many men will not be involved in relationships with women who have done porn? Because friends and family members find sex work unacceptable?

Sex work is still very taboo in American society, despite people consuming more porn than ever.

You should re-read your post. You questioned the assessment based on imaginary idealisations.

And by the way, this assessment is coming from one of the victims.

You are downplaying what the industry does to those women by saying that "ruining their lives" is an exageration and that she just "fucked someone" when lots of those women get trafficked, coerced, tricked, blackmailed, abused, tortured and way more.

wow, I did not expect these girls to actually win this case. Good for them!

When I first heard about this case, I understood how bad it must have been for them after the videos came out, but I didnt believe the story. If the GDP people were really telling these people that the videos would not be online and only distributed to private collectors outside the US, then what a bunch of assholes.

It sounds like they were also using proxy sites to hide their actual website so the girls wouldnt question them when they saw it, or they could say that was someone else. Thats so fucked up. I dont see why they would go that route, its just so shady, and it was pretty obvious they were expecting this to happen, but just didnt realize it would be on this scale.

Now, I wouldn't call Japan's society "better", but most pornstars there usually don't have problems after they leave porn.

Good that these girls got some measure of justice. Probably not all of them though

Really? I heard they were ostracized in a similar way after leaving it.

I saw one video where during a blowjob you could visibly see the girl tearing up. Now i know why. That is so disgusting. Hope they rot in prison

One of the most formerly prolific actresses just updated her status as being a licensed dieticien, another one went on to be the host of her own radio show (an actual radio show, not a podcast) and cosplayer. Even for the lower-end less known women, when they leave, we get no stories of them, as if they've left the public eye, which is probably more preferable than constant abuse and harassment of being called a whore or other such BS.

Don't know if it's over yet. They can probably go to some legal wealth management firm to show documentation they don't have the funds to pay the victims. Not sure how much money these guys actually made from the business or how much money they still have left...

That's true, but at the least I hope they serve some jail time. That'd be something, I suppose.

im not questioning if they lives were ruined but the reason they were ruined.

People are annoyed because your point is short-sighted and frankly dismissive of what the women experienced. It's not simply that they "did porn". Everything about their experiences with this company is harrowing and traumatic. Common sense should tell you how the actors were harmed in this case.

It's akin to asking "why do people get so upset after a divorce, they've got plenty of their life to live still?!" or "why do people get depressed in a rich society, their lives are still so good?".

No, AW is legit good, never heard of any drama in 10+ years of activity. I meant, is this Girls DO Porn (first time I hear it) the evil version of Abby Winters, then?
I don't see how they're similar at all. GDP is a casting style show like CastingCouch-X or ExCoGi where it's set up to be like the girls are auditioning. Abby Winters is more like GirlsOutWest or ATK or FTV where the girls are just doing it for fun as an experiment to show off and it's all set up ahead of time and the girls know exactly what they're getting into. Seems the girls on GDP didn't know beforehand what was going to happen so it's a bit less like CCX or ECG as the girls on those always seem to know why they came in. I always figured the GDP stuff was an act like most porn.

So I guess GDP would be like the evil version of ECG in that they're shot similarly but the girls have completely different mindsets when they come in. The girls deserve every penny they win from this.

I know way too much about porn.

Which is crazy because my friend went there and said they have a nasa room dedicated to monitoring the site. They probably only care about their copyrights. I mean what are the Canadian trademark and copyright laws there. Ive gotten sites to take down stuff instantly in the US as an attorney.

Pornhub only cares when they're forced to care. To bring it back to this topic, they only took down the videos of the performers that are part of this lawsuit after the federal charges against GDP were made, even though the civil charges had been around for a while at that point.

Glad they won. Sounded like a pretty open and shut case.

Also, moderation here has become more and more confusing. 3 months ban for making a comment on society that doing porn shouldn't "ruin your life"? I'm not going to respond to responses to this post to avoid taking over the conversation.

I'd think a lot of that monitoring would have to do with making sure people aren't uploading child porn, or some other exceptionally nasty stuff.

They must have seen some shit.
Hell, I've seen some shit. Probably true of a number of us middle aged people who witnessed the early days of porn streaming sites. Random friend or message board user says "hey, check out this site". I check out site... have nightmares for the next 10 years.

It's more of a curse.

I view it more as a gift, and being informed about the media you consume usually just makes you a better customer.

I need criminal charges and more lawsuits. If those men are that depraved as a citizen I can honestly say I don't feel safe with them walking around.

There are criminal charges. And one of the guys fled to New Zeland, so they're working on extraditing him.
