For all of you complaining about no jump, do you realize this series have NEVER been like DMCs/Ninja Gaidens/Bayonettas.

GoW is really a different sub-genre.

Yes, seriously. It's now a linear ("bus-tour") game with a close-up button-mashing one-enemy-at-the-time combat system and a heavy focus on cinematic presentation. Just like Ryse. Not saying that it sucks, because Ryse is a damn fun game. This GoW has nothing in common left with the rest of the series, aside from some iconic imagery. Even DMC was a more faithful rebootquel than this.
What are you even talking about? GOW was always linear this is is much more open.

After Ascension it was hard to get the higher ups to sign off onto another God of War game, they were pretty much done with the franchise, Cory had to pitch something great and fresh in order to get the game greenlit.

Did Ascension really perform that horribly performance and sales wise? I don't remember it being that bad of a game...

This game seems like it abanodned everything interesting about the franchise and just caved into modern conventions in hopes of reaching a wider audience, but instead appears relatively derivative and boring in marketing resulting in the opposite effect.

Maybe it will sell gangbusters but right now I get the feeling old fans don't give a fuck about this game and there aren't that many of the "new" fans they were hoping for.

This will sell immensely. Probably second behind Uncharted 4 this generation so far.

The game supposedly cost something like $50M to develop. I agree with you that it wasn't a bad game but I'm sure they were expecting something much better considering the amount of money they put into it.

I'm not a fan myself so far... sounds more like Assasins Creed than God of War to me. Also... less chaotic?... no jumping?... WTF!!!

I'd say more like The Last of Us than Assassin's Creed.

I know people wanted change in God of War, but ironically, given The Last of Us-ification of so many games coming out on PlayStation, a traditional God of War game would have been a refreshing change.

It's not really open world like Horizon, it's more wide-linear.

Also, Bloodborne and Nioh didn't have swimming and jumping and the combat in those games is way better than any GoW.

What? They have already said that this new game will be the "most open" in the series. (More like Uncharted 4 and the Tomb Raider Reboot)

But not having a jump button at all in these bigger areas makes me think most non combat actions will be automated, where you press X or whatever to activate it then watch Kratos climb something or cross a gap. Either that or extremely flat areas which will get boring pretty fast.

Even the jumping stuff was pretty epic in past God of Wars, bummed that it seems to be completly out? Sadly couldn't find better quality, but that stuff was awesome back then (and still is)

The new direction seems interesting to be sure. I just hope the traversal speed is fast and there's not a ton of slow walking considering the game is supposed to be on the longer side.

If they wanted to use Norse mitologhy, they should've better start anew with a new hero, create another tragic story and a more refined combat system.
Let's hope they create a really good reason to have Kratos fighting against dragons, trolls and Jormundgand.

It still has puzzles, fast pased combat with a high skill, exploration, set pieces, huge bosses fight...etc No it's not ryse at all.
BTW...Todd papy (ascension director) was working in Ryse 2 as a director before he left crytek...I wish I could see what he would do with it.

These changes sound fine to me. As I mentioned in other threads, we have 6 games in the old style. It's okay if they change it up for this one.

Do you have a PS4? Just buy the remaster when it goes on sale.

They will use the boy on this kind of sections. I remember seeing the director commenting on an area that you had to solve a puzzle to make the boy cross a wall to open a door for Kratos.

People didn't like Ascension because it felt like a watered down version of the previous games in terms of set pieces and made no significant gameplay improvement. They could retain the series' direction while improving it, as opposed to abandoning it as it seems they have done. That's what I'm suggesting. I would probably play another character action-lite game after all this time without a GOW title, but this I'm just not interested in right now. We've also heard murmurs of the pre-orders being relatively low, which seems to match with anecdotal evidence about interest in the game.

This game is just kind of weird. I don't understand why Kratos is in it really. And I don't understand why you would want to humanize Kratos by having him escort his kid around. It seems like they wanted to go for a Joel-Ellie kind of relationship while keeping an established character around. Except they forgot to ask themselves if it makes sense to do that in this case.

I don't like the sound of that, having flashbacks of DmC now.

By the way, do we know the general control scheme of this game? Is it going with the Souls layout? Curious that they'd use square as the kid button. Are we finally getting another action game that uses triangle and circle as the main combat buttons?

No jumping of any sort? Figure this is really going to impact verticality during combat, if there is any. Game still looks good, but it seems like they've gone too far in the direction TLOU, including crafting mechanics(which personally I've grown immensely tired of lately).

Honestly I don't mind the lack of jumping that much, but they really should have a proper video detailing the combat mechanics of the game.

I mean, they can do what they want, but if Ascensions poor reception/sales were the reason for it, then I feel they made the change for the wrong reasons.

Making one average game in a traditional format after 3 very successful predecessors doesn't mean you throw a successful formula out. They just got it wrong in one case, that's fine.

Fans didn't Devil May Cry 2 but they didn't go completely changing Devil May Cry 3 wholesale as a result.

Not a fan of crafting stuff either. It would be much cooler to just find sets around these optional areas you can find. A much better reward for exploration than crafting materials. Even if, at the end of the day, it takes the same amount of time played through the game to get a set, it's much more rewarding to find armor than it is to find random crap.

You actually do have a jump button in Bloodborne. :P

The game doesn't have a huge platforming element, but it's there.

I'm ok with "no jumping". Actually I'm playing Hellblade and I'm not missing the jumping/platforming. Hopefully this will arrive in March. A Collector's Edition would be a great birthday gift.

I may be wrong, but I think the only other buttons mentioned are L1 for the shield, O to grab and triangle to recall Leviathan, not sure if that is also the attack button for Leviathan.

I'll skim the article again and see if I got it right.

Hey, if you guys miss old God of War that much, maybe try Knack 2. It has similar mechanics, and Im not even kidding

It gets just as boring as old GoW's sometimes too..

I am a massive God of War fan and this will be day one no matter what. No jump and not fighting hoards of enemies at the same time like GoW3 is a major bummer. Does this game have magic attacks like previous games or are they gone as well. I am not happy!
