I haven't been keeping up with this game in terms of marketing. Any one know who reviewed the game or read spoilers if it's worth playing prior games or watching a recap. I have played God of War 1, 2, 3 and Chains of Olympus, but never touched Ascention and Ghost of Sparta. I also forgot the story as I didnt enjoy it or paid attention to it.

Telegraph on the combat:

Even early on, combat is dynamic and gratifying. Juggling foes with sweeps of the axe up close, or throwing it from afar before recalling it like the world's most lethal boomerang. You might launch your axe through an enemy's leg, them collapsing to the ground, parry an incoming blow with your shield before thumping your assailant with coiled fists before recalling your axe back through the bad guy and swatting them away like a fly. It's terrific stuff, with Atreus damaging and distracting from the perimeter with his own elemental arrows, always an asset rather than a burden

God of War's world is enormous – set aside at least 30 hours to explore it – but it is devoid of the busy work that plagues similarly ambitious games. Every diversion from the main story is an adventure rather than a task, making exploration worth your while for more than the treasure; some of the best stories here are hidden. The mythological setting imbues this world with mystery. Players feel like archeologists, learning more about the fiction with every foray into an unexplored corner of the map.

Do any reviews comment more in depth on the difficulty? Curious about how difficult hard and very hard are. Any reviews in here that can elaborate?

I think playing God of war 3 is enough for good overview before this game as it picks up from that game. In my view Ascension and Ghost of sparta is optional and not needed for this game unless you need to know in depth story of Kratos and have time.

Okay I'm all for this game and I'm hyped for it and from what I've heard, it absolutely deserves these scores.

But that tweet making it out to be better than the sum of Zelda + TLOU + UC4 + dark souls is just dumb.

I was promised RE4 meets Ico, TLOU failed at a fundamental level at what made those escort missions work(the AI companion being in danger from the enemies). It is a great game but far from GOAT or even GOTG, with a story that doesn't match those of the best in the industry that can only be told through gameplay.

Don't doubt it's a stellar game but man some comments in some reviews are so over-the-top.
I think I'm almost going to be the only one with a PS4 and without this game lol
