The whole shoplifting incident could very well have been to avoid a paper trail/receipt for the items he purchased. Would also explain why he didn't defend himself...may have been trying to prevent anyone from looking too deep.

I’ve been following this case for 10 years. This is mind blowing. I can’t believe it.

This was one of the big time unsolved sprees if I'm thinking of the right one. Pretty great that they nailed him.

But all the media focus is on michelle mcnamara, and I’m confused. I know she was obsessed with the case and did a lot of research. I know her book just came out in 2018.

Did her book provide new clues? Did it name the possible subject, or point in his direction?

The first page is of people saying “she did it”. And a ton of the media is focused on her. So I’m curious.
IIRC there was a reignited interest in the case after she began preparing for the book and talking with people involved.

Thanks for the reply. I just started the 48 hours documentary, and the beginning of it was focused entirely on her and Patton.

But I just got to the part where they said she pushed for the re-branding of his name to the “golden state killer” and re-igniting the case.

I was just curious if her book provided new evidence. But bringing national attention to it is just as important.

Interestingly enough, I always knew this as the “original night stalker”, and only just today found out he was now called “the golden state killer”. I had to do a double take when I saw the breaking news. As I wasn’t sure if it was the same man.

Edit:

Should have read the full thread more closely. Someone already answered:
Other people will start getting credit once the initial "Michelle did it!" stuff dies down.

You gotta admit, it's pretty amazing she writes the book, people start looking into it again, and boom, new evidence/leads get discovered and they get taken down.

This is similar to the Grim Sleeper case. No clues, no leads for like 20+ years. A journalist starts writing about it and it starts getting people to look over things again, and dude gets charged and arrested.

"relatively nice guy, would occasionally have cursing outbursts you can hear down the street."

How do these two statements coincide with one another? Oh yeah he's a nice guy who sometimes loses his shit so loud you can hear it all the way down the street. Like, what?

Michelle is getting a lot of credit because she deserves it. She was taking the drugs that contributed to her death to help cope with the depression and nightmares that researching this case was causing. Patton mentioned that it was starting to really fuck with her.

Anyone know a good documentary recommendation for this case?
https://youtu.be/JyuQQQ_THrg

This is the one I watched years ago. It’s to the point. Gives a good history of how his case was connected to earlier case. It stops in the 00s.

Then there is the latest one done by 48 hours:

https://www.cbsnews.com/video/the-golden-state-killer/

This is the latest one, literally 2017-2018. Although it heavily focuses on the writer of a book and her looking into the case (I think the first docu gives more info personally).

This. Anyone trying to downplay her role in this arrest is just being obtuse.

Obama never caught any serial killers. A lot of people are saying this is the greatest triumph in presidential history. Must protect citizens. WALL

Dude is apparently on suicide watch now. They'd better put him in a padded room in a straight jacket until we get every last detail from him.

Tbh I just wasn’t aware. The way the media was focusing on it, I figured her book provided new evidence. Or the book itself led to his arrest.

For many people, this case has been heavily researched and obsessed over for decades. I remember reading about this on forums 10 years ago. Plenty of police officers have connected the cases and even got a state DNA law passed in the 00s, so that his DNA would one day be matched.

However, it’s clear that her recent focus on the case re-invigorated it, as it seems the case went cold again in the late 00s. That is where I didn’t realize. I think that is what some people are missing. I kind of think the media is doing a bad job covering her role in it. Because I initially thought she had provided evidence or a break in the case.

We had a guy like that in our neighborhood when I was growing up. Dude would give you the shirt off his back, but he was also a retired longshoreman and could (loudly) curse up a storm given the opportunity.

I had never heard of the East Area Rapist until I listened to the Casefile podcast series on him a few months ago. I figured he'd never be caught! I'm glad that the families will finally get answers/justice.

I know it's off topic and all, but I wonder if the Zodiac Killer could ever be caught still.

I mean, would someone still be working on the case? Probably not right?

Crazy. I can't even imagine how someone could live with themselves after murdering and raping so many people and getting away with it, you'd think the guilt would just eat you alive.

One of the few times I regret the 8th Amendment. Guy legit deserves cruel and unusual punishment. Glad they got him though.

Edit: whoops, get those two mixed up.

This is great. I’ve been watching shit loads of documentaries about guys like him lately so I’ll have to check this one out. Just finished last night Gary Ridgway.

I learned most of what I know about this case from the epicly long and detailed 5 part podcast by Casefile. Highly recommend listening to it if you want to learn about all that went down. In addition to Michelle McNamara's book of course.

People always talking about Zodiac, and while I hope we can catch that guy someday... he's got nothing on Golden State Killer's shitty long list of crimes.

Just wow... stunning if this is really him.

I first was intrigued by this case after reading about it a the old site a few years ago. I hope he gets what he deserves and is completely shamed.

Saw someone on Twitter post about this last night but when I Googled it, it was just one loca news channel talking about. I thought maybe it was all BS.

It’ll be insane if they actually caught this fucker.

Apparently there's video of the police raiding his house and amongst the evidence, items he stole from his victims.

There's a gap between crimes that matches up with the birth of his daughter.

A victim (or victims) recalled him ranting about "Bonnie". This dude is married to a Bonnie.

Its definitely him. Amazing when justice wins out.

Wow. I never thought this asshole would be caught. One of the most prolific and sadistic thief, rapist, and serial killer in recent memory.

yes, it's EAR/ONS

GSK is the (terrible) name Michelle McNamara came up later with for her book. It really diminishes the rapes that made up the vast majority of his crimes and victims
It didnt diminish anything. The other names they gave him were lackluster and unmemorable. The one she gave him was the complete opposite, which helps keep the case in the public consciousness. EAR/ONS did nothing for that, which sucks because he was much more heinous than the Zodiac killer, who everyone knows simply due to his moniker.

It's crazy to me that these serial killer can raise hell indiscriminately and without remorse for years and then....have a family and "retire" to a normal life. Didn't BTK do basically the same thing?
