I mean I'm not gonna stop visiting Youtube, searching with google, or using GMail. Gaming isn't some sacred space.

I feel Apple is morally superior to Google. Note: not morally clean. But better than Google.
i really disagree.

they definitely do less data tracking (which i'm generally ambivalent about) but theyre anti consumer, anti competitive, greedy, they also haven't taken down the absher app, and foxconn alone is a bigger issue than everything in the op.

I don't trust Google one bit, and will avoid whatever they are doing. I don't have a Google account, don't use their Search (go DuckDuckGo), don't use Android (I did buy an Android Xperia X phone but removed Android and installed Sailfish OS on it), use HERE Maps and so on. Same with Apple, don't use their stuff either.

Pretty sure people said the same thing when Microsoft was bringing out XBox. None of this moralizing is going to matter if what they put out there is the bees knees; gamers will go to them, and the industry will change.

I really don't care what a company does outside of a business i care about as a customer. Especially when you put 'ethics' to light here. If they provide a better experience and the price is good then sure its a good thing! Also something thats obvious.. it'll provide more 'competition' to its rivals such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo..and thats only good for you people right? As for trust issues... i already use quite a few of their services and they haven't let me down as a user of theirs...so i'll definitely give them the benefit of the doubt.

If the big boys want in, they are in. There is absolutely nothing anyone outside of government(s) can do to stop them.

You are being too naive if you think google is more evil than Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo.

At least Google embraces open source software.

I don't know if they're anti-consumer any more than any other company. They have the best customer support of any major electronics company. Their products are expensive in and of themselves, yes, but that's not "anti consumer".
They are absolutely anti competitive, and they need to be taken down a notch. Hopefully Spotify's suit in Europe comes to bite them in the ass.
Greedy, every single company is greedy. No company isn't.
Foxconn is a big fucking issue, and far be it from me to trivialize it. But every company is using Foxconn. I can't use "uses Foxconn" as a point of differentiation.
What's the Absher app?

I don't know, OP. Competition is always a good thing, or so I hear around here a lot. Maybe now Sony, MS and Nintendo will actually use their money to develop new things.

Man, they really went to town on that evil after taking down the "don't be evil" sign.

If you like Chrome but hate Google I suggest you try Vivaldi or Brave (the first puts emphasis on user customization, the second on privacy), both run on Chromium (which is open source) so you'd keep most of the things you like about Chrome without the bad things. Brave is also available on mobile.
I'm sorry for missing your post (got caught up in the heated arguments lol).
I have heard a lot about Brave, I will make sure to look into that thank you!

Welcome aboard Google! I like your stuff (Youtube, Gmail, Chrome, Google search, Google docs, Google Drive etc.) so I'm looking forward to what you guys will bring to the gaming market.

More options and more competition is great imo. If their product sucks then it will fade away but if it's good then it's certain to find some customers. I don't feel the negativity.

At least Google embraces open source software.

Sure, but at the same time I wish they'd put more money into making sure the open-source backbone of their services was sustainably maintained. They're hardly the only one that uses it, mind, but they're certainly one of the largest.

Who needs priorities?

Yeah, the thing that gets me is that the mobile play landscape has been so fully ravaged by a race to the bottom that even $5-15 is considered too much to pay for a game on a phone now. Everything is long-term services and microtransactions. The idea that Google trying to take on the "big" console market will work out in the best interests of developers or consumers doesn't really match up with the way the other markets they have a stake in have gone.

They really didn't and to say otherwise is just trying to rewrite history. I was in my late teens when Microsoft enter the game and there was never this sense from gamers that they were a morally corrupt company.

Peoples issues with Google are not competition, which is what people were upset with Microsoft because they wanted to create an all in one box to take over the living room.

I don't really care because no company is "ethical". Google is not ethical for benefitting China in some ways? what is "ethical" in your eyes might not be like that for me and vice versa. I don't think of "USA" as ethical or better than China in any way. they are producing mass destruction weapons, selling weapons for billions of dollar, waging wars and sending troops to other parts of the world, building military bases everywhere, and probably using companies like Google/Facebook to spy on others even more than any Chinese company.

does this mean I should not buy or play any video game made by an American company?

I don't really know, I don't think so. more often than not, those games are creations of people with real passion, I think of them as something with artistic value that has nothing to do with politics, regardless of who are producing them. that is, until they are used as a tool to serve some purpose.

I don't care about the politics side of video games. if a company made a decision I don't like, I will be vocal about it, but I won't take "sides".

I don't like Google especially, but I don't like the way American companies operate in general, not just Google. for example, the console space never knew a company that was as anti-consumer as much as Microsoft with what they tried to pull with the Xbox One some years ago.

and what about Electronic Arts?
Activision?
Take-Two?

do you think those companies, that turned the video games hobby to a digital casino for young/weak people, are "ethical"?
the companies that won't hesitate to kick out hundreds of people when they are having their best financial performance ever? and acting like they are having a hard time by not swimming into enough billions?

those companies, which are working their staff to death all the time?

do you buy their games and support their practices?

you really should think deep before taking a stance and talking about ethics.

we will see what will happen, I guess.

Serious question for those who have stated it, why is "shaking up the console market" more important than ethics?

Because a lot of these ethical issues can be applied to the current 3 manufacturers, from the use of minerals from countries in war, to the use of Foxconn factories... To even contributing to drones for the american army in the case of Microsoft it seems.

I think the excitement just comes from a general sense of stagnation in an industry that's had the same three competitors ever since the NGage died off.
