Aren't Google Homes and Amazon echo's one of the most popular items? Why would Google need to secretly put a microphone inside of a niche product like the Nest to be able to record people?
No need. I don't think there's any foul play here. Same reason I scoff at paranoia towards Google Home, there are so many people hesitant to put one in their house and yet half probably use an Android phone.Aren't Google Homes and Amazon echo's one of the most popular items? Why would Google need to secretly put a microphone inside of a niche product like the Nest to be able to record people?
There is no indication they were spying on people though. The CEO of Google should be arrested for illegally spying on people. Corporations will continue to flaunt the law until there are serious repercussions for the decision makers.
It was literally just one person though. We had a top 5 list thread the other day ( you probably saw the thread ) and I listed I trusted google the least and a number of people gave me shit.
You can apologize here, thank you,
And I'm well aware of that fact. If my TV had one without disclosure, I'd be pretty mad. Already had to cut that sucker off from the internet.
This, plus your fucking smartphone, are why I don't care or worry about this "secret microphone". Most people already have smart devices they know have mics and are cool with it, I don't see why Google would have to sneak anything in secretly.Aren't Google Homes and Amazon echo's one of the most popular items? Why would Google need to secretly put a microphone inside of a niche product like the Nest to be able to record people?
Dumb Google, people will willingly bug their own houses, see Alexa
It sounds to me like Google is casing your house. It also tracks who's home and who's not, if and when you walked past the sensor and it even handily lights up to let you know it's there spying on you. It's pretty f'ing awesome.
I just plug it in via ethernet if I want to update it or whatever. No wifi for non-smart devices. Then again I just use the TV as a big monitor for my HTPC.I had a thought when I cut my TV off the internet that is just didn't show you content from the internet but was still sending data as it could remember the Wifi password. Best to block it on the router to be safe.
Amazing how the always err in the same direction: invading your privacy.
Whoops!
Wasn't this supposed to be available in Europe this year? If it is already, I'm sure the commission is going to take them to the cleaners for this one.
Sad to see some people in here literally giving this a "pass" and just excusing it away because other devices have it.
It should absolutely be disclosed if something you buy has the capability of listening to you or not, and if they don't disclose that and later on they bring it up that should lead to consequences for them, legal ones.
I mean it's straight up spying and absolutely should be illegal and have dire consequences for companies that do this.
Imagine this is Facebook and not Google. There will be much more uproar
Google gets a free pass because they made Android, which many people use
It's good practice to disclose if your product has a mic or camera in this day and age, even if it's reserved for future use.I don't understand what the big deal is. Do we know if it's always listening?
You're Google's product and advertisers Google's clients.Their business model revolves around invading your privacy.
They're like Facebook except they're better at hiding and PR.
