This OT covers PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of GTA Online.

Publisher: Rockstar Games
Release Date: PlayStation 4, Xbox One - 18 November 2014
Microsoft Windows - 14 April 2015

What is it?

Bundled with a purchase of GTA V, GTA Online is essentially the game map online for players and up to 29 of their friends (or enemies). To join in simply meet the XBL or PSN membership requirements (or play on PC for free) and create a custom character. Players will find missions, activities, mini games, and events that are similar to what is found in single player. GTA Online is radically different today than it was at launch. Previous gen console limitations split many activities into sub-maps or worlds where contact missions and/or heists took place. This required players to leave the main lobby or Free Mode hub, but has changed with the addition of current console gen specific businesses and events that are possible on the Free Mode map.

Rockstar has regularly provided free updates, or DLC. However taking part in or owning much of the recent content will require players to invest a significant amount of time or real world money. Rockstar’s decision to move newer businesses and events into public (and often hostile) Free Mode sessions can make saving up for those new toys even more difficult. Shark Cards are microtransactions that allow players to purchase in-game currency. They can help skip the grind, but the real world money to in-game currency ratio is not in the player’s favor.

This shouldn’t discourage new players from trying GTA Online, but understand that causing havoc with military grade hardware isn’t likely to happen on the first day; unless you partner up with rich players who will let you take the wheel/stick. Newcomers may want to approach the game by participating in earlier modes and missions. Contact missions and Heists take place in more controlled environments, and Free Mode can still be enjoyed in private sessions. Just know that newer content will require a significant buy-in.

Sounds expensive. What else is there to do?

This is still GTA. You can explore the map with friends stealing cars, pulling stunts, and running from the police. Players looking for a more structured experience can take part in a variety of adversary modes ranging from basic on-foot arena combat to vehicle based team objectives. There is a huge racing community and the return to pre-GTA IV vehicle handling has given us with one of the best arcade racing experiences of this console generation. Many players experience GTA Online solely through racing and adversary modes without setting foot in a Free Mode session. A built in content creator allows players to build competitive adversary maps and racing tracks to share with the community through the Rockstar Social Club.

The Rockstar Editor allows virtual directors and photographers to live out creative fantasies within the confines of GTA V’s map; though this isn’t restricted to GTA Online. Create a sitcom or recreate your favorite chase scenes. Photography that was previously limited to the in-game mobile phone Snapmatic can now be fully realized by using the editor to freeze recorded content and position the camera nearly anywhere. This content can also be shared through the Social Club.

Here is an example of what you can do with the Rockstar Editor:

Some players simply move online to overcome the limitations of single player and fill their garages and hangars with a fleet of customized vehicles not possible in the single player.

Notable Updates:

• March 10th, 2015 - Heists Update - A long awaited update. Players take part in 5 multi-part heists that act as more complex versions of contact missions. Beginning a heist requires a lead player to own a high end property (containing a 10 car garage) and to pony up an investment fee. Completing setup missions and the heists will earn players money, and discounts on related special vehicles.

• September 15th, 2015 - Freemode Events Update - Added random competitive adversary-like events to Free Mode requiring 4 or more players to be present in a session.

• October 20th, 2015 - Lowriders - Benny's Original Motor Works is open for business. Players can visit the garage to modify and customize select vehicles. This update also introduced new Lamar contact missions that were lowriders themed. Additional customizable vehicles would be added in the March 15, 2016 Lowriders: Custom Classics update.

• December 15th, 2015 - Executives and Other Criminals - Players can register as a VIP or CEO and hire other players as bodyguards in Free Mode. VIPs and CEOs can begin jobs that are similar to contact missions, but in Free Mode sessions. New high-end properties such as stilt house and yachts were made available for purchase.

• June 7, 2016 - Further Adventures in Finance and Felony - This laid the groundwork for future updates and expanded on the Executives and Other Criminals content. CEOs can purchase offices and warehouses. Product can be sourced to stock warehouses over time and then sold for a profit. This also marks a turning point for GTA Online requiring players to be in public Free Mode sessions to access new content that will earn in-game currency.

• October 4th, 2016 - Bikers - Clubhouses can be purchased to start a biker gang. New businesses can be purchased by clubhouse owners (MC presidents). These businesses are similar to CEO crate warehouses. Sourced supplies yields product over time that is sold for a profit. MC presidents can also initiate Free Mode missions (similar to VIP work from the Executives and Other Criminals update) from the clubhouse property.

• December 13th, 2016 - Import/Export - How about a little GTA in your GTA? Expands further on the CEO content from Further Adventures in Finance and Felony, and Executives and Other Criminals. CEOs can add vehicle warehouses to their growing list of properties; allowing the organization to steal and sell cars. An underground garage in the vehicle warehouse provides storage for a new line of special vehicles that are discounted after completing corresponding missions. Executive garages can be added to CEO offices to store more personal vehicles.

• March 14th, 2017 - Cunning Stunts - Surprise! GTA Online is now one of the best arcade racers of the generation. This stunt themed update overhauls the in-game content creator. Players can use new track pieces and assets to create stunt tracks, and in some cases entire tracts of land.

• June 13th, 2017 - Gunrunning - Another business, this time in the form of an underground bunker. Up until now supplies that was bought or stolen for other businesses was used solely for the purpose of earning money. This update introduced a research system for random unlocks in the form of weapon and vehicle upgrades. Supplies can be designated as material to sell or it can be used to research the aforementioned unlocks. Powerful new weaponized vehicles can be purchased and modified in a Mobile Operations Center (MOC). As in the Import/Export update special missions can be completed for discounted special vehicle prices.

• August 29, 2017 - Smuggler's Run - CEOs and MC presidents can purchase hangers at LSIA or Fort Zancudo. Fort Zancudo hangars come with low level clearance allowing those players to enter the base without gaining a wanted level. Hangars operate as previous businesses and can also act as a garage to store and modify aircraft. Players source and sell a variety of cargo and complete more special missions to unlock discounts for the newly released arial vehicles.

Thank you guys for getting this thread going! I was planning to do one myself a few days until I realized that I'm a couple months out from thread-making privileges. Before that realization hit, I had started compiling links to Rockstar's pages for the different content updates you've got listed in the OP. If you want to add those, I have them quoted here. If not, no worries!

I haven't been playing much lately, but I did buy a Nokota last night and flew around the city for a few minutes. Might be my new favorite plane. It's just a joy to fly.

Hey snacknuts, nice to see you here! I haven't even bought a hanger yet. I had been focused on military hardware and slowly unlocking research items while using import/export to pay for it. Though I fell out of the grind while helping a friend with their GTA Online episodic series.

That link compilation is great and it should definitely be added. I didn't include all of the updates in that list, but I wanted to make sure that the truly game changing items were there.

Anyone tried the new adversary mode, Dogfight?

Is it surprisingly fun like the previous one with aircraft, Stockpile?

Sharing this because why not.... (PS4 + Rockstar Editor)

Does anyone else like Knight Rider and/or would be interested in making a little video together?

You guys might want to consider holding off on any big vehicle purchases for awhile. R* hotfixed another “buy everything or nothing” glitch and it’s randomly preventing delivery on new vehicles.

Thanks for the warning. I got burned a couple weeks ago with a disappearing Vigilante that they couldn't confirm, so I had to buy another one, only to have the original magically reappear the next day. Cost me a couple million bucks. >:|

Yep I lost a Rapid GT Classic recently.

I was reading though a gtaforums thread on this and it appears to occur after switching characters. The first purchase after switching will not deliver. To avoid an expensive mishap, buy a cheap vehicle first. The next purchase should deliver without issue.

Judging from the commentary in the thread R* isn’t in any hurry to fix the bug.

So, someone who really doesn't know about all of this will wait for deliveries like an idiot and buy the same vehicle 2 or 3 times for nothing?

So how is the online mode nowadays? Still full of hackers? What about loading times? That really made me not play online mode...waited more in lobbys than actually played...did they fix that?

Been thinking about getting back into GTA Online for a while. I haven't played it since 2013 on PS3 when that came back. Looks like they've made quite a bit of changes.

Never see hackers, actually. Like, ever. Only seen one on PC side, but I mainly use PS4 so *shrugs*

As for loading times, one of the better additions over-time that has come to the game is all the in-world missions where you don't actually have to go to a lobby. Instead, missions unfold on the server with other players in it.

This will continue to be a puzzling situation. What seems like a huge seller (constantly in the top 10 every month in sales), but this place, like the last, has very little discussion for GTA:O.

PS: Hey e'erbody, wonder what's been added since I last logged on.

Other outlets like the GTAForums and dedicated gfaqs thread feel slower than usual. Free roam sessions have never been more packed though. Even free aim sessions are nearly full these days. I’m seeing more
Crews playing together; lots of players with like tags. Maybe everyone is taking to the social club.

There could also be the old thought: They're too busy in GTAO to talk about GTAO on a message board.

Last bit that I was really around for, was import/export and the cunning stunts. Maybe on for a day or so on Gunrunning.

Last I was on with some of the other GAF people I ran with (Tigress/Catdafelix and Baron), I remember early rumors of the game eventually adding something like player mansions. Are there any other potential updates coming down the pipeline that anyone knows about?

Too busy playing GTAO? Or other games... AFAIK all of the mentioned are here, but they haven't dropped by the thread yet.

Anyway shoot me a PM with your social club info and I'll send an invite to the crew. We are 4 members strong right now (lol). You are also welcome to join me online (PSN only). I'm not a very structured player though. I rarely have over 3 mil in my account, and I only grind when there's something I want.

No mansions yet. R* has settled into a drip feed, and I assume it's only going to get worse when Red Dead comes out. And I mean they're reeeeeallly dripping it out. We aren't even getting a new vehicle every week. Shit how long has the Smugglers run update been out? We can't even buy the Hunter yet.

Edit: took a few things out of my post. I don't want to come off as petty. :/

it's crazy, I think it's higher on the sales list for the month, than Wolf 2.

Well, there were a few sales last month and this right?

To elaborate:

GTA V at $30 or lower versus a single player FPS (that isn't CoD). You ask people who claim that they don't play video games if they play GTA and they'll more often than not reply, "well yeah." It isn't surprising that it's at the top of the charts so regularly. GTA Online's numbers and community engagement probably isn't going to reflect those sales, especially if you take into account that both current gen versions of the game require an online subscription to participate.

I played for three years straight. I got burnt out on it but have frequently thought about revisiting GTAO. The new money businesses do not seem that enticing but the bunker enables some neat weapon customization. I feel like new missions or something relative to new heists would be a nice turn, but I doubt those happen. I think we're getting ample Adversary modes and business ventures until RDR2 drops.

I had no idea we had a thread here. Hello again GTAO people! :)

Are we thinking Hunter release tonight? I want to save money for the next DLC, but I don't think I can wait on the Hunter. It's the Valkyrie on steroids.

Also don't buy the Bombushka. Probably the only GTA purchase I deeply regret. If you have good friends who can go gunner it might work, but most of my GTA friends are more casual, and the Bombushka doesn't work unless you have great gunners. I've killed about 5x as many people with bombs as my gunners have with the explosive rounds :(

I’ll need to find someone with a fully upgraded Hunter to test pilot. I still don’t have a hangar though maybe this will push me to finally buy one.

It's awesome. Only downside is that the arrangement of the landing wheels (with the third wheel sitting at the far end of the tail) means that it needs quite a large landing area. It won't fit on smaller helipads, such as on the yacht.

I picked up a PS4 Pro last night. Boost Mode transforms the game in busy sessions. The frame rate sticks pretty close to 30 now.
