This was announced a day or two ago, but it seems like we never had a thread.

PCGamesN said:
December was the biggest-ever month for Grand Theft Auto Online. This is stated in an announcement from Rockstar who also confirm that 2017 was the game's biggest year so far.

GTA V publishers, Take-Two, recently announced that all of their future games will have microtransactions.
It goes on to say that "2017 was the biggest year of GTA Online yet, capped off by an epic December that saw more players in the game than ever before." For the record, that's a four-year-old game continually breaking its own records - no real surprise, as last year it was announced as the USA's best-selling videogame of all time.

CAN'T STOP THE BEAST

What a run. Single player DLC would be so fucking huge but they don't even bother lol.

It won't slow down until GTA6 drops.

Time to get ready for RDR Online given the success of GTA Online. Let's just hope it doesn't cut into the SP content this time around.

I also wonder if GTA6 can touch what GTA5 has made. It's been going strong for years now.

Doesn't surpise me in the least. All of my "non-gamer" friends are crazy about this game, have been since release. And I'm constantly seeing people buy consoles just for this game. And it's totally deserved

I honestly don't understand how this game keeps making money hand over fist and GROWING with each passing month. GTAO was absolute garbage when GTAV came out - is it a completely different game now?

Makes sense that its growing as long as the installed base of current-gen consoles and PC gamers is growing.

What a success.

It's the same shit with more content solely designed to force you to spend money on microtransactions to have any chance of getting them in your lifetime.

There are a LOT of rich people poor in sense.

Who is playing this game online so much and spending a fortune on shark cards?? The online interface was horrible, tons of loading screens involved. Is it still the same mess?

Join GTA Online right now and you will see about 3 or 4 flying DeLorean's, maybe even some Lamborghini Countach's that can transform to a submarine and maybe some people having fun with the Jetpack. It's literally insanity right now.

If they add a real Battle Royale mode, it's over.

They already added one.

Holy hell, this game is making more money then I ever imagined. And I imagined it to be the best selling game in this century. This is crazy. Rockstar is not able to surpass this performance (or are they?).

I'm not really a multiplayer person but I am tempted to play GTAO solo. But from what other tell me, that's not fun.

I mean a real one. Just straight up copy the PUBG/KotK style.

Do you guys think GTA V can maintain in the Top 10 of 2018's most games sold?

Yeah. Wouldn't be surprised if it eventually becomes the second best selling game of all time.

Too bad GTAO is trash and completely limits your experience unless you grind an insane amount or spend money. It cuts you off from damn near a whole other world because you can't afford it.

GTA V came out at an extremely good time in terms of console generations and they were extremely smart in terms of how they released the different versions of the game in order to get people to buy multiple versions of the game.

What however elevated GTA V in a way people didn't expect, is just how deep Rockstars support for GTA Online became, very few games have seen this type post launch support and they have been building that fan base over many years.

I think they see Red Dead Redemption 2 as a second franchise to build a big online community around, with GTA VI being atleast 3-4 years away from potential release.

I don't understand how. GTA online is s beautiful world full of loading screens and lobbies. It's just a terrible implementation.

I wonder what percentage of all gamers play the top 10 biggest games currently and pretty much only those games?

Things like GTA, League of Legends, PUBG, Minecraft, FIFA, etc.

At this point I'm more interested in how they are gonna handle migration to the next GTAO

We won't see one for a long time.

The foundation is built so well that they can just do substantial DLC like the rumored VC/LC DLC.

I'm super curious about RDR2. They can't carry that model to that multiplayer world since it doesn't offer as much possibility for microtransactions.

Are the loading times still as bad as in the past? It was one of the main points that stopped me from playing GTA Online. It took ages until you could play something.

December 2017 was the first time I touched the game in a year I think, I even had it deleted from my console. Re-downloaded it, and was happy to see 3 million GTA dollars in the bank, so I could start with the Doomsday Heist right away with my buddies. Good times.

Of course it does, what kind of nonsense is this?

Hahahaha.

RDR2 can have a lot of MTs, yes (farm, drugs, smuggling, sheriff/deputy, arms trafficking, casino, etc) but the main thing driving sales now are cars / planes / vehicles in general. RDR2 won't have any of that because of the time period.

How would something like charging $100 cash for a yacht in GTA translate to RDR2? Or the price for numerous cars.

GTA and the universe was designed around poking fun at things like capitalism which is why they can charge crazy amounts for shit.

Who's gonna spend tons of money for a new horse? What incentives can they give like they can in GTA?

Think of all the unique, mythical horses, carriages they can sell.

Is there a starters guide to GTAV online? I made a character once, got put in the empty city and I just didn't have a clue what to do.

Biggest by player count, biggest by revenue, etc?

Great post that is emblematic of the problems GTA Online has. Recently jumped in again thinking about trying the new heists and just the overwhelming amount of shit that popped up on my screen every 1 second turned me off. That and also that the game pretty steadily forces new or lapsed players into purchasing GTA$ in order to consume new content. Unless youv'e steadily maintained the grind over the last couple years, it's very difficult to make use of any features released in the last 2 years without spending real money, or just be content not being able to use any of that new content.

The reddit sub for GTA Online has some decent guides for how to grind money, with Pay Per Minute charts and all of shit bull shit.

I find the whole world extremely skewed to the less than 0.01% of players who grind endlessly, and the economy is so fucked up in the game that I've been ostracized from it.

You come up with a horse only, when they are basically trying to recreate the world as it was in the American cowboy era. Literally everything is possible 'shark card' wise. Stop being narrow minded. Maybe you can buy a train for $100. Or upgrade your homestead. Or whatever.

It has a decently sized but crucially, it being GTA, a really devoted following. I always get the feeling there's a lot of young people playing it, probably too young to legally buy it. I went through a phase last Summer of getting back into it and whenever I was mic'd up I'd find myself usually playing with who I presumed were early teenagers.

There's also a lot of people who treat it kind of like a really violent Second Life type game and devote their lives to playing it seemingly all the time. The social aspect of it is something which shouldn't be overlooked when people analyse its success. Its also something I don't think Rockstar have ever really developed enough.

this makes me so sad. i used to consider GTA my favourite game series of all time but Rockstar have totally lost my respect with this GTA Online bullshit. i won't be giving them any more of my money.

you'd think making $1,000,000,000 in 72 hours would be enough but nope. they are truly milking this game for all it's worth.

RDR2 is fucked huh? What a shame, the first RDR had such a great multiplayer mode, had a ton of fun in it.
